Exercise 1 - Create a project

Create a project

On completion of this exercise you should be able to

Establish communication between the PCM600 and an Intelligent Electronic Device (IED)

Create a new project in PCM600 and configure an IED object

Exercise 1 - Create a project

IPAddress of the IED's rear port

Check that the IP address of the front port is set according to the training course set up (10.1.150.x) The
communication between the IED and the PCM600 is always Ethernet and the used protocol is IEC61850. The
physical connection and the IP-address must be configured before a dialog can start. There are two Ethernet
interfaces, one galvanic (the front port) and one optical (the rear port). The front port has the possibility to
provide an IP address with the help of a DHCP Server.
An Internet Protocol (IP) address is a numerical identification (logical address) that is assigned to devices
participating in a computer network utilizing the Internet Protocol for communication between its nodes.

1. Select Settings\General Settings\Communication\TCP-IP configuration\Front port
2. Check that the IP-address of the Front port is set according to the training course set up (10.1.150.x)

PC Ethernet port settings

The PC Ethernet settings are done in the Windows Control Panel.
3. Open Network Connections through the Start Menu

Test the communication

It's recommended to check that the PC has contact with the protective relay by using the PING command.
7. Execute the command prompt from the Start menu
8. Type cmd in the Run dialog
9. PING the connection

Exercise 1 - Create a project

Shortly after the ping command is written, we should get a reply from the IED that tells us that communication
is established.
10. Communication is established

Create a PCM600 project

11. Start PCM600
Figure 7: PCM600 icon

A PCM project contains all configured data for the substation. All data that are produced by the tools in
PCM600 are stored in the project.
12. Create a new project
Figure 8: The File Menu

Exercise 1 - Create a project

It is possible to import projects, create new projects, export projects and delete projects.
Figure 9: Plant Structure

Creating the plant structure

The plant structure is used to identify each IED in its location within the substation organization. It is an image
of the substation and the bays within the substation.
The organization structure for the IED may differ to the structure of the primary equipment in the substation.
Note: There can only be one Substation!
13. Select Object Types (under View in the main menu). Expand the General view
14. Create the Plant Structure in the order Substation, Voltage Level and Bay. N

15. Now create the Voltage level in plant structure

16. Select the apropriate voltage level of your substation

17. Now go for creating Bay

Renaming an item in the structure

Exercise 1 - Create a project

Once the plant structure is built, the name of each item in the structure can be renamed to the
names/identifications used in your grid.

Creating and configuring an IED object

There are two ways of configuring an IED object in PCM600, Online and Offline configuration. The Online
Configuration will read the necessary information from the physical IED to create the corresponding object in
PCM. Information like the housing type, the used overlay version for the LHMI and the hardware equipment
included in the IED will be read directly from the device.
The Offline Configuration gives the opportunity to create an IED object in PCM600 without having the physical
IED available. The needed information for the IED object in PCM600 has to be given manually.
18. Now create the IED in the plant Structure

19. Select Online Configuration when you have the physical IED is available and connected

IED protocol

Exercise 1 - Create a project

Communication between PCM600 and the physical IED will in our training setup be done over Ethernet. To
enable this, the protocol IEC 61850 must be chosen.
20. Select the IEC61850 protocol

21. Select the Front port and provide the correct IP-address

Exercise 1 - Create a project

22. Select Scan to let PCM600 read the configuration parameters directly from the IED

The IED object is now created in PCM600 and the needed information (housing size, LHMI and HW) is read
from the IED.

23. Setup complete
