Wanda 4 HEAT

Simulation software for cooling and heating systems

Advanced hydro-thermal simulation software is decisive for optimizing the design and operation
of district cooling and heating system. A model of the system allows layout selection, sizing of
infrastructure and equipment, impact of future customer connections, integration of thermal energy
storage systems and plants, assess energy performance and carry out trouble shooting analyses.
Wanda is a powerful and user- friendly program for the hydraulic design and optimization of pipeline
systems. It consists of various integrated modules: LIQUID, HEAT and CONTROL. In the last three
decades, Wanda has been developed and applied successfully for
drinking and wastewater transmission and

water treatment facilities
district heating and cooling systems
oil and LNG off-loading systems
power plant cooling water systems
commissioning of critical PLC hardware
operator training systems
real-time performance monitoring
The module Wanda 4 HEAT includes fluid temperatures so that a wide range of heat transfer
phenomena can be modelled in Wanda. The software can be linked to other packages (such as
building demand, lake cooling and geothermal storage models) which allows the simulation of details
as well as integrated solutions in a comprehensive way. This makes it an interesting module for
district cooling and heating networks and process industry.
Wanda 4 HEAT includes:
Temperature dependent fluid properties
Heat transport due to flow
Heat exchange with the surroundings
Heat transfer by dedicated components (heat exchangers)
Heat generation by friction
The combination of the HEAT module with CONTROL enables the simulation of the heating/cooling
system including the complete control of the system for
optimized design: system performance and energy efficiency
short-term scenarios: start-up, shut-down and load changes
long-term scenarios: daily and seasonal variations
what-if scenarios: economic and technical evaluations
This brochure summarizes includes a number of application examples. Similar hydro-thermal models
can be set up, run and analysed also for other application areas.

District heating system design and control

For the design of a district heating system, the complete range

of possible operating conditions should be verified based on
the time varying demands for the hot water and space heating.
This requires extended period simulations. The goal of these
simulations is to determine the required specifications of control
valves next to suitable control parameters. The figure above
shows an example of a very simple heating transfer system with
one heat supplier and one heat demand point.
Wanda 4 HEAT can also be used to design anti surge protection
for a district heating system. Based on scenarios like full pump trip
or emergency shut down of control valves, air vessels or closure
patterns can be designed. Since the temperature distribution in
the system is taken into account, temperature dependent fluid
properties are also used. This is of importance for cavitation for
example.

Offshore oil transmission lines

Oil from an offshore well is relatively warm. The oil cools down
along the subsea transmission line causing an increase of the
viscosity and a (significant) reduction of the transport capacity
and the production, if no appropriate measures are taken.
Wanda 4 HEAT can be used to design re-heating stations or to
determine the required capacity of a pipeline tracing system.
Since all transport related properties are temperature dependent,
the entire design and operation can be optimized with Wanda
4 HEAT, including basic design, surge analysis, control design,

commissioning tests and operational modifications. Wanda is an

indispensable tool for flow assurance in oil and gas applications.

Cooling of drinking water

Due to global warming, the drinking water temperature might

rise above acceptable limits. Active cooling of the drinking water
maybe a feasible solution. Especially when the extracted heat
can be reused in a nearby Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage
system. To investigate if active cooling would lead to a decreased
temperature in the entire network, simulations with Wanda 4 HEAT
have been performed. Based on measurements performed by
Waternet a validated hydraulic model has been created. This
model has been used to simulate the effect of the active cooling.
It was found that active cooling in this relative small distribution
network results in decreased temperature in the entire network.
During this project it was shown that Wanda 4 HEAT can also
be applied in calculations for the temperature distribution in a
drinking water network over a longer period of time.

Overview of the Wanda model

Other Wanda Domains

Wanda LIQUID
Wanda LIQUID provides a wide variety of components from
which most hydraulic systems can be built for each type of fluid,
no matter what size or operational conditions of the network.
Wanda LIQUID includes amongst others:
Accurate head loss of T-, Y- and X-junctions (Idelchik)
Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids (using the optional slurry
friction model)
Active components: pumps, (control) valves and air vessels
Filling of pipelines
Free surface pipe/channel component
Transition of partial filled pipelines into a completely filled,
waterhammer sensitive system
Advanced components: e.g. reaction-type turbine and dynamic
check valve

Under development: Wanda GAS

With Wanda GAS the transient phenomena of gas in pipeline
systems can be simulated. The basis is formed by the
conservation laws (mass, momentum and energy) and the
equation of state of the gas, allowing to calculate the pressures,
temperatures, velocities and densities as the primary variables.
Typical examples are:
Gas transport pipelines
Gas well studies
Pneumatic systems
Air conditioning systems
Non-isothermal processes (convection, conduction, expansion)
Abrupt phenomena such as choke valve break out or blow out

Integration and extras

External software such as MATLAB or LabVIEW can be coupled

to Wanda by use of the Open Modelling Interface. OpenMI is a
standard especially designed for coupling of numerical models
by organizations leading in water management. Interaction with
operator training software, real-time control or with mechanical
systems is possible.
Users wishes are a major reason to develop new components and
options (custom components). Deltares continuously develops
more components on request.

Wanda CONTROL
Wanda CONTROL is a very powerful module supporting all other
modules with the simulation of the complex operation of systems.
The control module allows the hydraulic system to be linked to a
control system. This allows the user to evaluate the effectiveness
of different control philosophies on the hydraulic system.
Notable features include:
Advanced pumping station controllers including parameters for
ramp-up time, minimum speed etc.
Activation of valves, pumps, etc
Varying of boundary conditions (pressure head or discharge)
Sensor and generators (logical or numerical output)
Conditional block (IF-statements and switches)
Logic operators (AND, OR, exclusive OR, NOT)
Numeric operators (add, multiply, functions, etc.)
Continuous controllers (PID-controllers incl. start/stop)
