COMPARRISON OF THREE SCULPTURES

Comparison of three Sculptures

The statue David is a well-known statue that many of us has come to enjoy to see. The
story behind the statue gives us more in depth thoughts when we look at the sculpture. The
David is the victory over Goliath. Three different artist gave their very own renditions of the
David. The first person and the creator of David, is Michelangelo. Michelangelo created this
statue out of marble and is an example of high renaissance art.
Michelangelo shows David as a nude statue as he is preparation to fight Goliath.
The slingshot on his shoulder and the rock is in his right hand that looks to be tense as if he is
ready to throw. This statue is in the form of classical contrapposto. This means his weight is on
his right leg leaving his left leg free. The lines of his body are of diagonal and shows detail of
his abs.
Berninis David has some differences but similarities. The similarities is that it still
shows the story of the defeat of Goliath and that it is nude as well but does show a cloth around
him. This David shows the use of space and diagonal lines. This suggests energy, movement,
and drama. David looks to be in the middle of hDonis battle, as he looks to be ready to throw his
stone. His face shows of desire and energy to throw the stone at Goliath. His eyebrows are
lowered as if he looks determined. When I look at this David it reminds me of the middle of the
battle.
The last artist to show a rendition of David is Donatello. When I look at this sculpture I
think of peace and victory. Though the statue does remind me somewhat of being feminine.
This could be the more slenderness of the body, the longer flowing hair, and the hat. This David
was made up of copper and tin and is hallow on the inside. This statue to me shows the end of
the battle and the victory. Unlike Michelangelos David, Donatello does show clothing. He has

boots and a hat on, but is also nude in nature as well. Donatello as well did the contrapposto as
well. Looking at this sculpture you see the victory because Davids foot is on Goliaths head.
This shows victory at last. In conclusion all three Davids show great triumph over Goliath.
They all show great detail of courage and strength and determination.
