SCHEMATIC CAPTURE

As the worlds most popular circuit design tool,

Multisim is used by more designers than any
other software of its kind. Our tools will help
you reduce development times and produce
higher quality circuits - we guarantee it! And
because Electronics Workbench products are
so easy to use, you will be producing designs
in the time it takes to install and configure most
other programs.

Electronics Workbench has a portfolio of

products to meet all your design needs:
schematic capture, SPICE/VHDL/Verilog HDL/RF
simulation, PCB layout, autorouting, and
FPGA/CPLD synthesis. Best of all, Electronics
Workbench products have scalable functionality.
This allows you to start with an entry-level
version and, in time, move up in functionality.
Mix and match products as you need.

With Multisim's intuitive schematic capture, you'll

spend less time entering schematics and more time
performing real circuit design. Wiring circuits in
Multisim is easy compared with wiring in other
tools - just click on a source and destination pin and
Multisims autowiring automatically routes the wire
for you. Or if you prefer, simply wire schematic the
traditional manual way by clicking at each change
in the wires path.

EASILY LOCATE THE

PART YOU NEED
Parts are logically arranged according to families
so you won't have to scroll through long library
lists.

Multisim's Model Makers offer you highly advanced,

custom-developed algorithms to automatically
generate SPICE models for you, simply from
databook parameters.

Use Multisim's Remote Control function to work

with colleagues on circuits, live as if you were in
the same room. A Version Control feature prevents
problems arising from multiple people sharing a
single design.

CREATE CUSTOMIZED CORPORATE

PROJECT DATABASE OF PARTS
Multisim includes three levels of component
databases. In addition to the Master Level database
(the set of parts shipped with your product), you
can configure two additional levels of component
databases. The Project/Corporate Level database
can be set up to include pre-approved parts
allowing designers to easily identify preferred parts
or alternatively to include the parts you need for a
particular project.
A User Level database allows you to configure
your own custom libraries to include your favorite,
specialty or custom parts. And with Multisim
you can add customized fields to parts in the
database for information such as: cost, lead-time,
or preferred supplier.

FAST, ACCURATE
SPICE SIMULATION
Multisim SPICE is the best way to simulate boardlevel analog and digital circuits. The Multisim
simulation engine is based on industry standard
and proven Berkeley SPICE , with enhancements
for even greater speed, accuracy, and convergence.
XSPICE features have also been added for improved
behavioral modeling and digital simulation.

SPICE SIMULATOR

INSTRUMENTS OPERATE JUST LIKE

REAL WORLD COUNTERPARTS

With Multisim, you don't have to be a SPICE expert

to take advantage of this powerful simulation
language. You'll spend more time designing and
less time reading training manuals. For example,
only Multisim contains a suite of virtual instruments
that operate just like their real-world equivalents.
When you adjust the controls on these instruments,
SPICE commands are automatically issued to the
simulation engine.

Virtual instruments let you take advantage of the

full power of simulation without having to be an
expert in simulation (eg. SPICE) syntax. When you
press a button on an instrument, an appropriate
simulation command is issued and results
immediately displayed on that instrument's face.
The face plates of Multisims
virtual instruments are
designed to closely match
those of their real-world
counterparts, so controlling
these instruments is just
like working in a real lab.

Co-Simulation
COMBINING THE BEST OF
SPICE, VHDL & VERILOG HDL

CO-SIMULATION PROVIDES
THE IDEAL TESTBENCH

Recognizing that different parts can be best

modeled in different simulation languages,
Electronics Workbench has developed one of the
worlds only true co-simulation engines for which
a patent is pending. Multisim delivers the world's
best co-simulation engine capable of handling
everything from basic analog components to
complex digital ICs. Best of all, Multisim's combined
SPICE/VHDL/Verilog HDL engine is less expensive
than a single simulation engine from most other
EDA vendors.

There's no better way to test the behavior of

FPGAs/CPLDs than to simulate their true
performance in a circuit. In addition to writing
testbenches, you can use Multisim's co-simulation
to verify the behavior of a board containing a
mix of FPGAs/CPLDs (designed in VHDL/Verilog
HDL) along with board-level devices (modeled in
SPICE), thereby observing the actual performance
of programmable devices as part of the circuit in
which they will be used.

SIMULATE PARTS THAT

CAN'T BE MODELED IN SPICE

Board-level simulation has

never really been commonplace among PCB designers
because it couldnt handle
all the components on the
board. Multisim could very
well herald the next step
forward in PCB design
methodology, because it
can co-simulate both HDL
and SPICE components,
and its available at a very
affordable price.

Most complex digital devices such as

microprocessors or FPGs can be modeled only in
an HDL, and not in SPICE. This has traditionally
prevented many engineers from making simulation
an integral part of their design process, because
not all the components on their circuit could be
simulated together, on one PCB. Multisim breaks
through this SPICE limitation by enabling you to
include any combination of SPICE/VHDL/Verilog
models in your simulations without requiring HDL
knowledge.

Multisim Synthesis produces optimized netlists

from your VHDL code for all leading FPGA and
CPLD vendors. The program uses advanced size
optimization algorithms for you to fit more code
into less silicon. Fast synthesis speeds let you spend
less time waiting and more time designing.

OUTPUT SUPPORT FOR ALL

LEADING VENDORS
Multisim's unique support of all major FPGA and
CPLD formats differentiates it from products that
write only to their own proprietary netlist format.

EXTENSIVE OUTPUT OPTIONS

A built-in standard autorouter meets the needs

for most basic boards and contains many user
options for you to customize routing strategy
for any particular design. A via reduction option
can reduce production costs by routing boards
with a minimal number of vias. You can even
set up different routing strategies for each layer
of your board.

Ultiboard includes several features to improve

board layout before production. A Chamfer
Corners option automatically replaces 90 degree
corners with 45 degree angles for improved
manufacturability. A Delete Open Trace End option
removes all unconnected copper. Similarly, a Delete
Unused Via option removes all unused vias. Finally,
Ultiboard provides flexible annotation methods to
renumber objects.

Ultiboard generates a number of different output

formats to support your production and
manufacturing needs. Produce copies of your
designs directly form a pen plotter, photoplotter,
or any Windows compatible printer.

Ultiboard makes manual trace placement easy.

Traces can be routed at any angle, and their widths
changed while routing. This allows you to use
narrow trace widths to route through tight areas
and switch to larger trace widths in open areas.
You can switch layers while routing, and Ultiboard
will automatically insert a via.

FEATURES

Built-in autorouting lets you choose the layers & routing

directions for your boards.

Ultiboards Design Rule Check can be run either in

real-time or in batch mode.

FEATURES

DESIGN RULE CHECK

To ensure that your boards are error free, and to
prevent wasted time and money reworking boards,
Ultiboard provides a real-time design rule check.
While the Design Rule Check can also be run in
batch mode, the real time check identifies errors as
they occur, not when it's too late. You can specify
allowable clearance values between various objects
on the board. Or, if you prefer, choose one of four
default settings compiled using the most common
settings used by production houses.

Autoplacement and Optimization

Grid and Gridless (Shape-Based) Autorouting

INDUSTRY LEADING PERFORMANCE

UNIQUE GRID/GRIDLESS
AUTOROUTING

FULLY CUSTOMIZABLE
ROUTING OPTIONS

Ultiroute routes on a grid wherever possible, but

automatically switches to gridless autorouting
where necessary. As a result, you get all the benefits
of gridless autorouting for difficult to route traces,
with the convenience of having most traces located
on grids for easy and efficient manipulation.
Ultiroute easily handles dense pin arrays, and can
route around the contour of any shape.

The highly flexible router gives you complete

control over the autorouting process. You can define
anything from grid size and maximum via counts
to preferred routing directions for each layer of
the PCB.You also have complete control over the
costing factors used by the routing algorithm: via
cost, pin channel cost, packaging cost, counter
direction cost, etc.

A number of factors contribute to Ultiroute

consistently outperforming other leading
autorouters in benchmark tests. Advanced
autoplacement produces optimal part layout to
facilitate autorouting. Unlike other autorouters that
use the same static default options for each board,
Ultiroute automatically analyzes your design file
and automatically makes appropriate changes
to default settings to reflect each design's unique
characteristics. Finally, combined grid/gridless
autorouting delivers the best of both grid and
gridless routing algorithms.

DESIGN ANALYSIS FEATURES

OPTIMIZE PERFORMANCE
For each unique board, changing an autorouters
settings will affect layout results. Ultiroute
automates this complex process so that the
autorouter always delivers near optimal
performance. To do this, Ultiroute analyzes your
design file and changes the router default settings
based on the characteristics of that particular
design. This contributes to Ultiroutes ability to
consistently achieve better autorouting results
when compared to other leading autorouters,
which utilize fixed default settings that are the
same for every design.
