In addition to facing seri ous environmental issue s, the world is also confr onted with unprecedent ed social, political, econo mic, financial and fiscal challe nges.
In these fast chang ing and demanding times, changes in e ducation sector are inevitable. Transform ing education to meet the 21st Century cha llenges is now one of the key focuses of a ll major efforts to co mbat environmental deterioration, social problems and econo mic crisis. There is widespread realizatio n that it is through embedding sustainab ility in education tha t our society can find lasting solutions to climate change and gl obal warming, loss of biodiversity and extin ctions, human rights and poverty, energy and food security an d many other colossa l challenges. Making the needed transform ation happen require s dialogue among sta keholders, sharing of experiences, building synergies and worki ng together to overc ome the barriers to change and to create a sustainable future.
The International Greening Education Event (IGEE) 2013 will gather stakeholders from around the globe to discuss about embedding sustainability across the educational landscape. The event will examine the critical role of education, the academic institutions and the educators in creating environmentally, socially and economically sustainable world. It will be a forum for discussions, presentations, sharing of ideas and experiences, n etworking and exploring collaborations to embed sustainability in curricul um, courses, teaching and learning material and in the operations of academic institutions.
This global gathering provides an excellent oppor tunity to discuss about equipping both young and adult learners with the knowledge, competencies a nd skills that they need t o succeed in addressing today’s and tomorrow’s challenges. It will also be an opportunity to examine the integration of values and ethics in ed ucational programs for preparing today’s students to be tomorrow’s responsible leaders, activ e citizens and stewards o f planet earth.
