+ What does the world tell us we need to be?

+ With Satan drowning us with these messages; how does that make you feel?
Elder Marvin J. Ashton, who was a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, said:
One of the great tragedies of life, to me, is when a person classifies himself as someone who
has no talents or gifts. When, in disgust or discouragement, we allow ourselves to reach
depressive levels of despair because of our demeaning self-appraisal, it is a sad day for us
and a sad day in the eyes of God. For us to conclude that we have no gifts when we judge
ourselves by stature, intelligence, grade-point average, wealth, power, position, or external
appearance is not only unfair, but unreasonable.
God has given each of us one or more special talents. It is up to each of us to search for
and build upon the gifts which God has given. We must remember that each of us is made in
the image of God, that there are no unimportant persons. Everyone matters to God and to
his fellowmen

to all men liberally (James 1:5)
discerning of spirits

others true intentions and hidden motivations. This gift helps a person to detect
hidden evils and to see the good in others.
tongues/interpretation of tongues
The gift of tongues and the gift of interpretation of tongues are commonly manifest
in missionaries who are able to learn and understand languages quickly. These gifts
may also be enjoyed by people who need to overcome language barriers to learn and
teach the gospel.

Elder Marvin J. Ashton listed some of the gifts not often spoken about:
The gift of asking; the gift of listening; the gift of hearing and using a still, small
voice; the gift of being able to weep; the gift of avoiding contention; the gift of
being agreeable; the gift of avoiding vain repetition; the gift of king that which is
righteous; the gift of not passing judgment; the gift of looking to God for guidance;
the gift of being a disciple; the gift of caring for others; the gift of being able to
ponder; the gift of offering prayer; the gift of bearing a mighty testimony; and the
gift of receiving the Holy Ghost

Heavenly Father has blessed us with these amazing gifts; what are the gifts of the Spirit to
be used for?
For the benefit of the children of God.
To whom are the gifts of the Spirit given?
(Hint: verse 9)
To those who love God and keep His commandments and to those who seeketh so to
do.
Why should we seek spiritual gifts?
What do you think we can do to seek them?
(It may be helpful to point out that the Lord can reveal spiritual gifts through
patriarchal blessings)
Patriarchal Blessings are blessings from the stake patriarch (just like a bishop holds a
calling, the stake patriarch is the same) that provide direction from the Lord.
James E. Faust
"When moved upon by the Holy Spirit, the patriarch makes an inspired
declaration of the lineage of the recipient together with such blessings,
spiritual gifts, promises, advice, admonition, and warnings as the patriarch
feels inspired to give. It is in essence a prophetic utterance."
Thomas S. Monson
"It may be brief or lengthy, simple or profound. Length and language do not a
patriarchal blessing make. It is the Spirit that conveys the true meaning. Your
blessing is not to be folded neatly and tucked away. It is not to be framed or
published. Rather, it is to be read. It is to be loved. It is to be followed. Your
patriarchal blessing will see you through the darkest night. It will guide you
through lifes dangers."
Your patriarchal blessing will see you through the darkest night. It will guide
you through lifes dangers.
Russell M. Nelson

[Jesus Christs] Church provides patriarchal blessings to give each recipient a

vision for his or her future as well as a connection with the past, even a
declaration of lineage back to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Robert D. Hales : To find the gifts we have been given, we must pray and fast.
Often patriarchal blessings tell us the gifts we have received and declare the
promise of gifts we can receive if we seek after them, Elder Hales says. In order
for us to access our gifts, we must be living in harmony with the principles of
the gospel.

+ From the gifts weve discussed, write at least two gifts that you
would like to develop. Explain why you would like to have them
keeping in mind what the Lord said in verses 812.
Have YW read 8-12
This can be a PP value experience (the one you write in).
As you strive to develop these gifts in your life, youll grow closer to our Savior.

Doctrine and Covenants 46:3033

30 He that asketh in the Spirit asketh according to the will of God; wherefore it is done even as he asketh.
31 And again, I say unto you, all things must be done in the name of Christ, whatsoever you do in the Spirit;
32 And ye must give thanks unto God in the Spirit for whatsoever blessing ye are blessed with.
33 And ye must practice virtue and holiness before me continually. Even so. Amen.

Four things we are to do as we use our spiritual gifts.

we should ask for the will of God to be done
act in the name of Jesus Christ
give thanks for the blessings we receive

practice virtue and holiness

Express gratitude for the gifts of the Spirit and for their influence in your life. Give students
an opportunity to do the same. Testify of the Lords desire for all people to know they are
welcome and needed in His Church.
