Nowadays, the trend of the fashion world is becoming more and more
peculiar each year. We see people wearing less, shorter, more casual and flashier
clothes. Young people tend to go around wearing these clothes at the wrong time in
the wrong place and University is no exception. At the faculty of Medicine of Pelita
Harapan University, most students are also victims of these trends and because of
that, this year the faculty has decided to establish a dress code policy that applies
to all students, tutors, lecturers, and doctors. Everyone werent too happy about this
new policy but is forced to comply. In my opinion, adopting this form of dress code
to our faculty is a wise decision, because it prepares us, saves expenses, and makes
us look different.
The dress code policy forces students to wear clothes that make them look
professional. No t-shirts, polo, jeans, leggings, mini-skirts, shorts, sleeveless, or
sandals allowed. Students instantly look more polite, mature, and doctor-like. In my
case for instance, I love casual wear like jeans and t-shirts, but now I learn to like to
wear more formal clothes, that I may have to wear for the rest of my life as a
working doctor. So, this policy helps me prepare myself for my future career.
As this policy is helping prepare us for our futures as professionals, it is also
helpful for our future expenses. At this age, people dont usually grow much
anymore, which means that theres a very big possibility that the formal clothes we
wear now to university may still fit us later as we start working. If it is still wearable
and still fits perfectly, we can save a lot of money on new clothes and allocate it to
something more useful.
Differentiating medical students from other faculty student is now easier.
With around 100 students for each batch, and each year there are 4 batches still
taking classes, we have approximately 400 students in our faculty alone. Its almost
impossible to recognize everyone, but with the help of this dress code policy, you
can actually tell which ones are medical students and you have a very good chance
to get acquainted. So, on a week day, anywhere you go around the campus, and
you notice someone wearing more formally and polite clothes, it most likely is a
medical student.
In conclusion, there are three good things about the dress code policy
established in the faculty of Medicine. First, it helps prepare us to dress like a
professional. Second, it helps us save money on buying new working clothes in the
future. And third, it makes us different from other faculty students. Even though
many are complaining of this new policy and are still trying to rebel against it, I
think this policy is exactly what our faculty needs and it is most definitely worth
keeping for the years to come.
