WATER

WATER

What do you, the trees, and a hamster have in common? Give up? You all need water. All
living things must have water to survive, whether they get it from a water fountain, a rain
cloud, or a little bottle attached to the side of a hamster cage.
Without water, your body would stop working properly. Water makes up more than half
of your body weight and a person cant survive for more than a few days without it.
why? Your body has lots of important jobs and it needs water to do many of them. For
instance, your blood, which contains a lot of water, carries oxygen to all the cells of your
body. Without oxygen, those tiny cells would die and your body would stop working.
Water is also in a fluid that is part of your immune system, which helps you fight off
illness. You need water to digest your food and get rid of waste, too. Each cell depends on
water to function normally. And you can bet that water is the main ingredient in sweat.
Your body doesnt get water only from drinking water. Any fluid you drink will contain
water, but water and milk are the best choices. Lots of food contain water, too. Fruit
contains quite a bit of water, which you could probably tell if you have ever bitten into a
peach or plum and felt the juices dripping down your chin! Vegetables, too, contain a lot
of water think of slicing into a fat tomato from the garden.

HOW MUCH IS ENOUGH?

Since water is so important, you might wonder if youre drinking enough. There is no
magic amount of water that kids need to drink every day. Usually, kids like to drink
something with meals and should definitely drink when they are thirsty. But when its
warm out or youre exercising, you will need more. Be sure to drink some extra water
when youre out in warm weather, especially while playing sports or exercising.
When you drink is also important. If youre going to sports practice, a game, or just
working out or playing hard, drink water before, during, and after playing.
When your body doesnt have enough water, that is called being dehydrated. A bad case
of dehydration can make you sick.
Your body can help you stay properly hydrated by regulating the amount of water in your
system. The body can hold on to water when you dont have enough or get rid of it if
you have too much.
You can help your body by drinking when you are thirsty and drinking
extra water when its warm out. Your body will be able to do all of its
wonderful, waterful jobs and youll feel great!

2.Read this article and do some
exercises in the next page.

Water is a common chemical substance that is essential for the survival of all known forms
of life. In typical usage, water refers only to its liquid form or state, but the substance also has a
solid state, ice, and a gaseous state, water vapor or steam; it is one of the very few substances
to be found naturally in all three states on earth. Water takes many different forms on Earth:
water vapor and clouds in the sky; seawater and rarely icebergs in the ocean; glaciers and
rivers in the mountains; and the liquid in aquifers in the ground.
Water covers 71% of the Earth's surface. On Earth, it is found mostly in oceans and other large
water bodies, with 1.6% of water below ground in aquifers and 0.001% in the air as vapor,
clouds (formed of solid and liquid water particles suspended in air), and precipitation.
Saltwater oceans hold 97% of surface water, glaciers and polar ice caps 2.4%, and other land
surface water such as rivers, lakes and ponds 0.6%. A very small amount of the Earth's water is
contained within biological bodies and manufactured products. Other water is trapped in ice
caps, glaciers, aquifers, or in lakes, sometimes providing fresh water for life on land.
Water moves continually through a cycle of evaporation or transpiration
(evapotranspiration), precipitation, and runoff, usually reaching the sea.
Clean, fresh drinking water is essential to human and other life. Access to safe drinking water
has improved steadily and substantially over the last decades in almost every part of the
world. However, some observers have estimated that by 2025 more than half of the world
population will be facing water-based vulnerability, a situation which has been called a water
crisis by the United Nations. Water plays an important role in the world economy, as it functions
as a solvent for a wide variety of chemical substances and facilitates industrial cooling and
transportation. Approximately 70 percent of fresh water is consumed by agriculture.

water per day.
2. The total amount of water on the earth is about 326 million
cubic miles of water.
3. Ninety-seven percent of the earth's water is saltwater in
oceans and seas. Of the 3% that is freshwater, only 1% is

9. Where does the water go? About 70% evaporate into the
air, 3.12% is used for industry, 2.46% is used for irrigation,
0.42% is used in cities, and the last 24% are unused

Spanish hydrology

RIVERS are bodies of water which start high in the mountains when rain accumulates or snow melts and flows into an ocean
(Atlantic Ocean for example), a sea (Mediterranean sea for example) or another river (The Ebro river for example).
THE WATERSHEDS OF SPAIN
A watershed is an area where all the rivers and streams flow into the same sea.
It is the smallest one in Spain. Its rivers are short because they rise in the Cantabrian
THE CANTABRIAN

Mountains, close to the sea. They have a regular flow regime and an abundant flow because they
run through areas with an Oceanic climate so there is abundant rainfall all year round.
The main rivers in the Cantabrian watershed are: the Nalon, the Nervion and the Deba.

THE
MEDITERRANEAN
WATERSHED

With the exception of the Ebro, the rivers are short and have irregular flow regime
because they flow through areas with a Mediterranean climate with low rainfall. The flow
increases in the spring and in the autumn because it is when the precipitation is higher.
The most important rivers in this watershed are: The Ebro, the Jucar and the Segura.
It is the largest watershed in area. Its rivers are usually long because they rise in

mountains a long way from the Atlantic Ocean. The rivers have abundant flows and regular flow

The main rivers are: The Mio, the Duero, the Tagus, the Guadiana and the Guadalquivir.
