Theatre Outreach

COURSE DESCRIPTION: An in-depth study of the concepts of dramatic playwrighting,


production and performance, combined with an intensive study of current issues in sociology.
Students will research, write and produce plays which highlight and depict the social concerns of
contemporary youths.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon completion of this course, the student will be
able to:
1. Demonstrate a working knowledge of the process of researching, writing, editing and
producing a socially relevant dramatic piece.
2. Demonstrate a foundational knowledge of the current issues in sociology.
3. Demonstrate a foundational knowledge of current dramatic forms.

Success in this course will be measured by practical and written testing, as well as performance
review.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS: Student will:
1. Attend and participate in all class meetings.
2. Complete numerous assignments, to include: research, writing, editing and producing.
3. Collaborate on the creation of an original play of social import.
4. Perform the completed script in a showcase at Collin College.
5. Tour and perform the completed script at venues across the DFW Metroplex.
LAB HOURS: In addition to the scheduled class meeting time, students must complete 32 Lab
hours during the semester. These Lab hours must be documented on the attached Lab Sheet,
approved and signed by your instructor.
16 32 total Lab Hours will be devoted to work during posted Lab Times on your various group
and solo projects. This work will be fulfilled in consultation with your Instructor. My Lab
Times for this semester are:
Mondays 3:00-6:00 pm
Tuesdays 5:00-6:00 pm
Wednesdays 3:00-6:00 pm
Thursdays 4:00-6:00 pm
Fridays 5:00-6:00 pm
8 - 16 total Lab Hours may be completed via the Service and Educational Experience options.
This work will be fulfilled in consultation with your Instructor.

* Working in one of the shops (Costume Shop, Scene Shop, Makeup Lab)
* Participating in departmental events (Note: Departmental events are posted on the Callboard
section of the Collin Theatre Center web page)

* Assisting with the North Texas Drama Auditions (Fall semester only)

APPROVAL is at the discretion of each instructor. APPROVAL must be obtained before the
event.
Failure to meet the full Lab commitment will result in your final course grade being
lowered one letter grade.
METHOD OF EVALUATION: Students will receive an equally weighted grade in each of the
following areas: a.) attendance, b.) class participation, c.) production participation, d.) growth
and improvement, e.) research, f.) writing/dramatic scripting, and g.) group discussion
leadership. This course is subject to a selected enrollment. Thus, you have been chosen by your
instructor as one of the leaders of the department. Please accept this challenge, and continue the
strong tradition of this Theatre Outreach class.
ATTENDANCE POLICY: Attendance is the single greatest predictor of success. Attendance
is expected at every class. The student is solely responsible for making up missed lessons and
class work. The Theatre is a deadline-oriented profession. Students are expected to be on time
and prepared for every class. Tests will only be given on the day they are scheduled. No makeup tests will be arranged (Exception, see 2.23 below).
COURSE WITHDRAWAL POLICY: The last day to withdraw from this course is October
14, 2011.
2.23 Religious Holy Days: In accordance with Section 51.911 of the Texas Higher Education
Code, Collin College will allow a student who is absent from a class for observance of a
religious holy day to take an examination or complete an assignment scheduled for that day
within a reasonable time. Students are required to file a written request with each professor
within the first 15 days of the semester to qualify for an excused absence. A copy of the state
rules and procedures regarding holy days, and the form of notification of absences from each
class under this provision, are available from the Admissions and Records office.
Note: Labor Day (September 5), Plano Balloon Festival (September 16, all
campuses close at 3:00 pm); Plano Balloon Festival (September 16-18),
Thanksgiving (November 23-27)

ACADEMIC ETHICS: The College may initiate disciplinary proceedings against a student
accused of scholastic dishonesty. Scholastic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to statements,
acts, or omissions related to application for enrollment, the ward of a degree, and/or the
submission of ones own work of material that is not ones own. Scholastic dishonesty may

involve, but is not limited to, one or more of the following acts: cheating, plagiarism, collusion,
use of annotated texts or teachers editions, and/or falsifying academic records.
Plagiarism is the use of an authors words or ideas as if they were ones own without giving
credit to the source, including, but not limited to, failure to acknowledge a direct quotation.
Cheating is the willful giving or receiving of information in an unauthorized manner during an
examination, illicitly obtaining examination questions in advance, copying computer or internet
files, using someone elses work for assignments as if it were ones own, or any other dishonest
means of attempting to fulfill the requirements of a course.
Collusion is intentionally aiding or attempting to aid another in an act of scholastic dishonesty,
including but not limited to, providing a paper or project to another student; providing an
inappropriate level of assistance; communicating answers to a classmate during an examination;
removing tests or answer sheets from a test site, and allowing a classmate to copy answers.
