Andover Primary School

Layout and Presentation of Work (all stages)

At Andover it is recognised that good presentation needs to be taught formally as

part of the language curriculum. However it will be implemented across the
curriculum and there will be opportunities for daily handwriting activities at the
lower stages.

Staff and pupils will need to take time for correction and redrafting (not for each
piece of writing) and to celebrate success.

The use of a ruler (P2→) and a sharp pencil will be encouraged.

Jotters

• Jotters should be kept in neat and clean condition. Graffiti on the outside
is not acceptable. Named labels will be issued prior to the start of each
session for each class, child’s name, class and subject on each jotter.
• Homework jotters should be covered with brown paper/wrapping paper
etc. and labelled clearly.
• A List of the jotters to be used for each area of the curriculum is inside the
appropriate storage areas.
• The date will always be clearly displayed on the blackboard.

Dating of work

• In P1 the teacher will date all work either by hand 12.02.04 or with a
stamp.
• In P2 and P3 the date will be written by the pupils at the top of a page for
News and homework – Friday 15 August 2006. For Environmental
Studies/spelling mental or workbooks the date should be written at top L.H.S
15.08.06.
• In Primary 4-7 at the beginning of a day’s work the date should be written
in the top left margin – 15.08.04.
• The title will be written …… starting at the margin.
• Title to be underlined with a ruler.
• A line is to be left under the title before commencing written work.

Start here …………..

• After completion of the day’s work a line should be drawn across the page
with a ruler. The next day’s work will be started immediately below this line.
• All jotter work will be completed in pencil. No felt pens will be used in jotters.
At the Infant stage berol black pens may be used for FOW type drawing.

Mathematics

• In mathematics work is to be dated and given a title e/g/ USHM4 Page 12.
• All lines in mathematical work from OP2-7 should be drawn with the use of
a ruler.
• After completion of the day’s work a line should be drawn across the page
and the next day’s work started immediately below the line.
e.g.
12.08.04 SHM Page 15
1. a) 27 b) 35 c) 48 etc.

• Squared jotters will be used for mathematics in classes P1-6

• In P7 plain jotters may be used for shape/angles etc.
• Loose leaf graph paper/dot matrix paper/squared paper is available in the
jotter cupboard.
• A new page should be taken only when there is less than 3-4 lines left at the
bottom of the page when new work is being started – not a new page every
day/exercise.
• There should be no missing pages.
• Throughout the session the Headteacher/Depute Headteacher will monitor
workbooks and jotters. The aim is to monitor teaching and pace of learning
and give the management an overview of the work of the whole school.

Correcting Work
Language

• A line will be left between each numbered answer in P1-P3

• The correction code will be displayed in each classroom in a prominent
position. It will be referred to when setting targets with pupils prior to writing.
• The code will be used from P1 – P7 and adjusted to take account of the level
the child is working towards. Mistakes will be underlined and the code used in
the margin where appropriate.
• Pupils should correct their mistakes when a piece of work is returned. Time
may need to be set aside to do this. There is little point highlighting the
mistakes if the pupil does nothing about them.
• Work displayed on the wall should be of a high standard (P2-P7). As far as
possible work displayed will be the best for that child.

Mathematics

• Throughout the school errors should be marked with a ● and redone and the
teacher mark C next to it, rubbers may used. (A jotter full of √ when 50% has
been corrected gives the impression the child is coping well.
