Week 1 Reading and Spelling Words

Dear Family,
Now that your child is in the second half of second grade, the Backpack Pages are a little
different. Your childs weekly spelling test will cover 12 Memory Words and no Pattern Words
rather than 15 words of both types. The reason is that the Memory Words are harder now.
Remember to have your child practice these steps with each Memory Word:
1. Hear the word.
2. See the word. (Look at it and then
close your eyes and imagine it.)

3. Say the word.

4. Say the letters in the word aloud.
5. Write the word as you say the letters.

Instead of spelling Pattern Words, you child needs to practice reading them. Have him read the
list a couple of times each night until he can read all the words correctly.
Thank you for the important support you give your child in learning to read and spell!

Write each Memory Word on an index card. Put the cards facedown. Draw a card and
read the word to yourself. Then spell the word aloud without looking at the card, and
have a family member tell you the word. Then your family member draws a card and
spells the word aloud. You say the word and spell it again.

Week 1 Fluency Practice

Golly, What a Problem!

Lets not waste time moping, said Ms. Blossom
briskly. We need a plan. She wrote on the flip chart:
What to do

Who will do it

Now, she said. What shall we do?

Hot Rod and I can ask Gus and Gert when theyre
moving, said Tic. Then well know how much time we
have to find a home for Golly.
We can all ask our parents if we can adopt Golly,
said Icky.
We should write them letters, said Doc. Thats more
grown-up.
Lets write friends and neighbors, too, added Frits.
Lily and I could introduce Golly
to the people at the apartment house,
said Alf. Hes such a nice dog.
Maybe theyll change their rules
and let him move in.
Ms. Blossom wrote the
Superkids ideas on the chart.
Splendid, she said. Lets get
to work!

Week 2 Fluency Practice

Gollys New Home

Saturday morning, the Superkids met at the gas
station to help Gus and Gert deliver Golly to the farm.
Gus and Gert invited Ms. Blossom to come along, too.
Ms. Blossom had never met Golly before. She
knelt down and stroked Gollys long ears. Youre a
handsome dog, she said to Golly. I can see why the
kids love you.
Golly wagged his tail and smiled his goofy, doggy
smile at Ms. Blossom.
Everyone was quiet on the ride to the farm. Golly
seemed to understand that something serious was
happening. He stretched out on the floor of the van
and put his nose on his paws. His eyes and ears were
alert. When they arrived at the farm, Golly followed
Gert out of the van.
Well, hello there, you fine fellow! said
Ms. Gibson as she hugged Golly.
Welcome to the farm.
Golly wagged his tail and leaned
against Ms. Gibson in such a friendly way
that the Superkids had to smile.
