Mahamrityunjaya Mantra

(Mahamrityunjaya Audio CD)

Mahamrityunjaya Mantra (maha-mrityun-jaya) is one of the more potent of the

ancient Sanskrit mantras. Maha mrityunjaya is a call for enlightenment and is a
practice of purifying the karmas of the soul at a deep level. It is also said to be quite
beneficial for mental, emotional, and physical health.

The handwritten mantra below and the audio sound

sample are by my dear friend, Swami Nardanand.

Om Tryambakam Yajamahe
Sugandhim Pushtivardhanam
Urvarukamiva Bandhanan
Mrityor Mukshiya Maamritat

We Meditate on the Three-eyed reality

Which permeates and nourishes all like a fragrance.
May we be liberated from death for the sake of immortality,
Even as the cucumber is severed from bondage to the creeper.

AUM/OM: Absolute reality. That which encompasses the three states of waking,
dreaming, deep sleep, represented by AUM, the three levels of gross, subtle, causal,
the three levels of conscious, unconscious, subconscious, and the three universal
processes of coming, being, and going. Absolute silence beyond the three levels is
the silence after AUM.

Tryambakam: Trya means three. Ambakam means eyes. It means the three eyes of
the Absolute, which are the processes of creation, existence, and dissolution, as well
as the other triads, which are part of AUM. The three "eyes" means experiencing
these three stages and triads at one time, from the higher, all pervasive vantage
point of the Absolute.

Yajamahe: We rejoice in meditation on all of this.

------------------------------

Sugandhim: Means fragrance. Like a spreading fragrance, all of this permeates the
whole of existence, while at the same time being that existence

Pushtivardhanam: Means that which sustains and nourishes all. Thus, the fragrance
that permeates all is the sustainer of all beings, while also the essence of all beings.

------------------------------

Urvarukamiva: Urva means big and powerful. Arukam means disease, like the
spiritual diseases of ignorance and untruth, which are like the death of Wisdom or
Truth.

Bandhanan: Means bound down, as in bound down to the ignorance and untruth.

------------------------------

Mrityor: Means ignorance and untruth.

Mukshiya: Means liberation from the cycles of physical, mental, and spiritual death.

Maamritat: Means please give me rejuvenating nectar, so as to have this liberation,

like the process of severing the cucumber from the creeping vine.

40 day practice

The period of 40 days has been widely recognized as an auspicious period both in the
East and the West since ancient times. A traditional way to do an extended mantra
practice is to choose a number of repetitions per day, and to do that for 40 days. The
mind likes to have a beginning and end to a practice, a sense of completion, such as
comes with a 40 day (or longer) practice.

1. Fixed time per practice session: Mind finds comfort in knowing that it will
do the practice of one round of 108 repetitions (or some other number of
rounds), and that each round will take a predictable amount of time (18
minutes per round of 108 repetitions).

2. Same number of rounds: Mind also likes the predictability of doing a certain
number of rounds done per day. Mind may resist at times, but once it gets
started in the practice, mind likes the habit.

3. Specific number of days: Mind also likes the plan of knowing how many
days or months a practice will take to complete. This can be very beneficial in
stabilizing a noisy mind, which is a common complaint.

Listening to this online Mahamrityunjaya mantra recording of 108 repetitions (18

minutes) is equivalent to one round of a mala. A mala is a set of counting beads with
108 beads. Only 100 are counted, with the other 8 considered an offering to the
divine, however you personally hold that. You might choose to do 1, 2, 3, or 4 rounds
of 108 mantras per day, counting with a set of mala beads.

Or, you can use the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra CD instead of the mala beads, as the
CD has 4 tracks of 108 repetitions each. You might choose to do 1, 2, 3, or 4 tracks of
108 mantras per day. You might also want to alternate between doing some with the
recording and some without, counting instead with a set of mala beads.

It has been said that there is freedom in discipline; choosing to do a regular practice
frees the mind from wondering what practice will be done that day. It is also
important not to do the mantra practice with rote repetition, but rather, with feeling
and awareness.

By running your own experiment for 40 days, you can decide for yourself whether or
not the practice is beneficial.

Extended practice

A noticeable level of mantra siddhi (power of the mantra) is said to come with
125,000 repetitions of a mantra (Such an extended practice is called a purascharna).
This is equivalent to 1250 rounds of a mala.

Listening to this online Mahamrityunjaya mantra recording of 108 repetitions (18

minutes) is equivalent to one round of a mala (Or, you can also use the
Mahamrityunjaya Mantra CD). To complete the equivalent of 1250 rounds of a mala,
or a total of 125,000 repetitions of Mahamrityunjaya mantra, will take this amount of
time:

Rounds Time Total Appx.

per day per day days months

1 18 min 1250 42

2 36 min 625 21

3 54 min 417 14

4 1 hr, 12 min 313 10 1/2

5 1 hr, 30 min 250 8 1/2

6 1 hr, 48 min 209 7

7 2 hr, 6 min 179 6

Such an extended practice with Maha Mrityunjaya mantra can have a tremendous
effect in stabilizing the mind in preparation for advancing in meditation. Such a
practice simply must be done personally to understand the benefits. It does take
quite a commitment to do this practice every day for such a long period, but it is well
worth the effort.

In choosing the level of practice per day, it is important to have stability from one
day to the next, and to not skip any days. It is best to choose the level that works for
you consistently, rather than changing the number from day to day. For example, if
two rounds per day is a good number (34 minutes), then it's better to stay with that
amount each and every day, not to do none on one day, but four on the next day.

Mantra, the Brain, and Words

by Swami Jnaneshvara Bharati

Effects of Mantra: For thousands of years, yogis have been teaching the value of
mantra in stabilizing and clearing the mind, leading one to deeper spiritual
awakening. Modern neuroscience is also beginning to discover the relationship
between mental functioning and the way words are used. The following graphic is
from the book The Secret Life of the Brain, by Richard Restak, M.D. (©2001, Richard
M. Restak and David Gruben Productions, Inc.).

Ways of using words or Mantra: Notice the explanation of increased blood flow
(indicating increased activity) to the various parts of the brain, depending on whether
one is hearing, seeing, speaking, or thinking of words. Regarding thinking about
words, the text points out that "thinking about words engages the limbic association
area responsible for thought, learning, perception, and emotion."

Cultivating higher functioning: This higher functioning (buddhi) is intentionally

cultivated by yogis through the practices of mantra, meditation, and contemplation.
Not only do the yogis use mantra (i.e., words), but often recommend focusing the
attention on this frontal part of the brain as well, placing attention in the ajna chakra,
the center accessed through the space between the eyebrows.

"Remembering" the Mantra: In Yoga Meditation science, different means of using

mantra are prescribed. The silent, inner remembering way of using mantra use
considered a higher, more effective form than hearing, reading, or speaking the
mantra (See the article Japa and Ajapa-japa). Many benefits come from the proper
use of mantra, including dealing with ways of thinking, ability to learn, ways of
perceiving, and positive use of emotions (the four points mentioned by Dr. Restak in
the text above). Collectively, these benefits set the stage for the deeper practices of
meditation, contemplation, and prayer (See the article Converging Four Practices).
Mantra is universal: In reflecting on the relationship between mantra and brain
physiology, it is most important to remember that mantra is not a practice solely
used by the Eastern traditions. The use of mantra, word, compact prayer, or
affirmation is recommended by virtually all religions and meditative traditions,
although they might describe or use them in different ways.

Varieties of Mantras: There are many mantras, of which a few are described in this
website. These are Soham, OM, and Maranatha. Each of these are beneficial in the
ways described above.

There have been various remedial measures that have been prescribed in the
Shastras to propiate Saturn and to get his blessings. These remedial measures are
being disclosed over here so that individuals can get help. But before you actually do
these study the character of Saturn and then think what he actually wants from you.
Be like what Saturn wants you to be and then you will see the remedial measures
giving benefits to you. A word of caution remember these should be performed by
you only and not some hired person because Saturn is not interested in getting these
remedial measures he wants devotion and truthfulness from you. Self help is the best
help. Another thing if you are not sure about the pronunciation of a mantra (Chant)
then you should consult some person who actually knows to pronounce the mantra.
And you should also know the meaning of the mantra. Here the Mahamrityunjaya
mantra is being explained in detail.

Mahamrityunjaya mantra is one of the Two Great mantras explained in the Vedas.
The other being the Gayatri. It is basically chanted when one is having physical and
mental ailments. It also helps in bringing about peace and tranquility to the
mind.Daityaguru Shukraacharya(The preceptor of the Asuras used the Amrit
Sanjeevni Vidya) to bring life to the demons who had been slayed in war using this
mantra

Remedy number1:Chanting of the Maha Mrityunjaya mantra-Mrityunjay is another

name of Lord Shiva. Saturn worships Lord Shiva. Besides this mantra is also very
powerful in overcoming health problems. Even seemingly impossible to cure health
problems have been cured with this mantra. The mantra is:

'Om triayambakam yaja mahe sugandhim pusthi vardhanam.Urvarukamiva

bhandhanat mrutyhor mukshiya ma amritat"

Meaning: I worship the three eyed lord Shiva, who is full of fragrance and who
nourishes everybody with health and vitality. May he liberate me from Death and not
from immortality: Just as the same way a pumpkin is severed from it's bondage from
the creeper.

If it is difficult for you to pronounce the above mantra then you can chant the short
form of the above mantra. It will also bring about the desired results. The laghu
Mahamriyutnjaya(short form) also known as the pandashakshri mantra goes like this:

"Om Joom Sah (Mam) palay palay sah joom om"

Note: If you are doing the mantra not for yourself but for your loved one or your loved
ones then replace the word mam with the person who is having the disease. For eg if
you are chanting the mantra for an individual named as john the mantra will be:Om
joom Sah John Palay Palay sah joom Om".

mam as in mum

How to practice the mantra:

The mantra should be chanted while facing the east or the north direction. You
should use a Rudraksha Rosary and use the middle finger and the thumb to move the
beads. Keep a copper vessel full of water in front of you. When you complete
chanting the mantra i.e,repeating the mantra for 108 times then drink the water. This
practice can be started on a Monday. Also sprinkle some water around some house
while chanting the mantra. This will ensure that the negative energy around your
house is destroyed bringing you much calm and peace

Benefit and advantages of the mantra:

This mantra emits divine positive vibrations and creates a divine Armour (Kavacha)
around you. This Armour saves you from diseases and the negative influences. This
mantra will cure your ailments internally and help you override harsh circumstances.
It will rejuvenate you no end.You have to always reflect while chanting the mantra
that Shiva is curing you.

This mantra will show greater powers if chanted on the mahamrityunjaya yantra.you
can download this Yantra from this page itself. Light inscense in front of the Yantra
and then practice the mantra
