There are various luminous bodies seen in the
sky. [Some of these have their own light whereas
others reflect the light of the Sun.] Of these, the ones
that are (relatively) fixed are the tra (stars), which
are grouped into clusters called nakatra (asterism).
The ones that are moving are called graha or planets
(forced definition).
Parsara uses the word jyotirbimba to refer to
the luminaries (Sun & Moon) and the stars in the
asterism. Bimba generally refers to the disk of the Sun
or Moon. It also means a mirror and indicates the
Moon and other planets which reflect the light of the
Sun. Bimba includes the meaning shadow and
includes such shadowy planets like Rhu (ascending
node) and Ketu (descending node) and the
upagrahas1.

The Greek word planet means

wanderer and meant a moving
celestial body.
Today it refers to any of the nine
large heavenly bodies revolving
about the sun and shining by
reflected light: Mercury, Venus,
Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn,
Uranus, Neptune, or Pluto in the
order of their proximity to the sun.
It also refers to similar body
revolving about a star other than
the sun.
In Astrology it indicates any
celestial body regarded as
exerting an influence on human
affairs.
In Vedic astrology, since a
geocentric chart of the heavens is
used, the luminaries Sun & Moon
are also seen as wanderers in the
sky and added to the list of planets.
The invisible lunar nodes Rhu &
Ketu which are but mathematical
points are also included in the list
as they exert great influence in
human affairs. The extra-saturnine
planets are dropped as Jyotia uses
the five planets Mercury, Venus,
Mars, Jupiter and Saturn as
symbolizing the paca tatva (five
states of existence and their
governing principles). There is no
place for other planets in the Jyotia
proposition.

Planet is the forced definition for the word

graha which includes (a) the Sun & Moon, (b) the
five planets Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter &
Saturn, and (c) the lunar nodes Rhu & Ketu. These
planets are constantly moving through the asterisms
in the zodiac. The zodiac comprises of 27 nakatra
(asterism) commencing from Asvini with each measuring 13020 [13020 X 27 = 3600].
The zodiac is also composed of 12 signs commencing from Aries and each measuring
300 [300 X 12 = 3600]. The sign that is in the eastern horizon at any point of time is the
lagna or ascendant because due to the rotation of the earth from west to east, it rises
1

Upagraha m. (derived from graha with upa - implying inferiority), a minor planet or any heavenly body of a secondary kind, a comet,
meteor, falling star or a mathematical point like the nodes that does not have a physical body.

(increases longitude) in the east. A study of the signs, asterisms and planets
(including their motions) with reference to the lagna divulges all information and
the fortunes of the native.

1.1 Movement of the planets

In the solar system, the Sun is stationary at the centre and the planets are
revolving around it in elliptical orbits. Their speed is uniform in that they are
sweeping equal areas in equal time spans (Keplers law). All planets travel in the
anti-clockwise direction when viewed from the northern celestial hemisphere.
However, for studying life on earth, this heliocentric view is not considered and
instead, a geocentric view of the sky is used.
Figure 1: Geocentric view (pole star)

1.2 Apparent motion

Due to the elliptical orbit as well as due to the apparent retrogression, the
planets have varying speeds (angular longitudinal motion) called gati or gait. They
appear to be moving fast (cara) or very fast (at-cara). At times they are stationary
(sthira) for a very short duration just before they change the direction of motion.
They appear to retrogradation (vakra) when away from the Sun. The average motion
is given below.

1.3 Latitudinal motion

Besides the longitudinal motion, the planets also have latitudinal motion i.e.
they appear to be moving in a north- south direction with reference to the earths
ecliptic (horizontal plane that passes through the center of the earth and Sun). This is
called krnti or declination. Although this does not show up in the two-dimensional
chart of the heavens, it is noted separately and is used in political astrology and
other purposes.

1.4 Nodes
The lunar orbital plane is tilted by 50 9 to the earths ecliptic. This causes the
Moon to have a latitudinal motion as well. The points of intersection of the lunar
orbit with the earth ecliptic are called the ascending node (Rhu) and descending
node (Ketu) because the Moon either gains or loses latitude after these nodal
conjunctions respectively.
Similarly, all other planets from Mercury to Saturn also have their orbits tilted
to the earth ecliptic and have latitudinal motion. Their points of orbital intersection
with the earth ecliptic are also called nodes of the planets. Thus each planet has its
own set of Rhu-Ketu. However, in Vedic astrology we are only concerned with the
nodes of the Moon. Although the true nodes have some direct and some
retrogradation motion, only the average motion called mean nodes (which is
always in retrogradation) is used in Vedic astrology.

2. Classification of Planets
2.1 Good & Evil planets
Parsara
tatrrkaanibhputr kendurhuketava |
krr eagrah saumy krra krrayuto budha || 11||
Translation: The planets are classified as krra (evil) and saumya (good) based on
their inherent nature. The Sun, Saturn, Mars, weak Moon, Rhu & Ketu are evil
planets. Venus, Jupiter, Mercury and Moon are good planets. Mercury is classified
as an evil planet if it conjoins evil planets; else it is a good planet. Mercury, when
conjoined more good planets or when placed alone in a sign is considered a good
planet.
The strength of the Moon is based on the moonlight. The Moon should have
more than half-light to be considered strong. In general, astrologers accept that the
Moon is strong from sukla paka (waxing fortnight) aami tithi2 to ka paka
(waning fortnight) aami tithi.

2.2 Names of planets

The planets are known by various names to bring out their
nature and attributes.

Translation: Sun is the tm (soul) of the klapurua (time personified) and is the
natural significator of all souls. Moon signifies the mana (mind) and chitta
(consciousness)3. Mars signifies the sattva4 (strength) and Mercury signifies the
speech (and voice). Jupiter signifies jna (knowledge) and sukha (happiness) as
Venus signifies potency (semen/ procreative abilities)5.
Each of these planets represents an aspect of the individual of which, the
representative of the true spiritual self that is neither created nor destroyed, is the
2

8th day of the bright half where each lunar day (tithi) is equal to a 120 separation between the Sun and Moon. There are 30 tithi
in a month.

Parsara (BPHS) mana; Kalyaverma (Srvali) cheta

sv (Sattva) is different from sTv (satva) the latter means goodness.

Kalyaverma (Srvali) states gurusito jna sukhe which implies that knowledge is signified by Jupiter and happiness by

Venus. However, Parsara mentions deveJyae }ansuodae &guvIRyRdayk> devejyo jnasukhado bhgurvryapradyaka. Thus what
Kalyaverma is emphasising is the fundamental difference between Jupiter and Venus as representing happiness in the
spiritual and material planes respectively.

Sun. The word tm has various meanings which focus on the self. The moon
signifies the mana (mind) in its five levels of consciousness: 1.

Physical Consciousness: The physical existence of the individual and

consciousness of the physical existence of the existence of all other bodies and
relationships with these bodies.

2.

Mental Consciousness: Knowledge of material and other things that influence

the mental makeup and create various desires. The important aspects are (a)
luxuries, vehicles and other things that enable a more comfortable life, (b)
religious and spiritual knowledge and aspirations and (c) Education and
higher learning.

3.

Sub-conscious: The peculiar mental makeup of the individual that filters the
information and works in the background. This is the (a) inner strength,
weakness or ability and (b) the ability to resist evil or negative forces.

4.

Super Conscious: The mana (mind) of the individual is linked intricately to

the minds of the ancestors as is seen in the genetic make up of the individual.
It carries the karma of past existence and benefits from or suffers due to the
good and bad karma of the forefathers/ancestors. Ingeneral the two areas are
the patrilineal karma and the matrilineal karma.

5.

Supra Consciousness: Varhamihira states tm sahaiti manas mana indriyea

svrthena cendriyamiti krama ea ghra |yogo'yameva manasa kimagamyamasti
yasmin mano vrajati tatra gato'yamtm ||B.S. 75-3. The tm (soul) merges with
the mana (mind); the mana merges with the indryas (senses) and the senses
with their respective organs in rapid succession. This entire merger is
instantaneous. With such a (strong and intimate) bond is there anything
unattainable by the mind? Besides, wherever the mind goes, the soul shall
follow.
The tm is the master of the chariot and the mana is the reigns. The intellect
is the charioteer and the horses are the indryas (senses and their organs). The
objects are the goal. Our view is that the number of horses attached to the
chariots of the various planetary deities indicates the number of fully
developed senses and sense organs that the animals represented by them
possess. For example, the Sun symbolizing birds, has seven horses and this
could mean seven fully developed sense/organs. The Moon symbolizes the
human being and has the ten horses to its chariot indicating that man is the
only animal which has all ten senses/organs fully developed.
There was a debate as to whether the tm separates from the mana at some
stage after death and many astrologers felt that this does not happen, else
how could the person remember his past incarnation. Our view is based on
the above teachings of Varhamihira and other Vedic seers and we believe

Bhat Parsara hor stra: Graha gua svarpa adhyya

Author: Sanjay Rath, Singapore 2004
r Jagannth Center, 2004 (For internal circulation only)

that the tm is separated from the mana and the senses/organs as a part of
the process of death. This is the greatest gift of Mahevara. How else could the
tm and mana reunite during the birth process (as explained by
Varhamihira above) if they were not separated beforehand? Secondly,
memory is a function of the dh (intellect) and not the mana (mind).
Thus, Supra consciousness refers to the fact that the mana is directed on a
path of worldly experiences based on karma of the individual in the past
incarnations that could neither be suffered nor forgiven called prarabdha dha
karma.

2.4 Political signification

Parsara

Translation: The Sun and Moon are the royalty and represent the king and queen
respectively. Mercury signifies the prince (heir apparent). Mars signifies the
commander-in-chief of the armed forces and other such leaders6. The minister and
secretaries are signified by Jupiter and Venus respectively. Saturn is the servant
(labor). Rhu and Ketu represent the army.
In the modern nation-state context, Sun represents the head of the state and
such top political heads that are the final authority and represent the government.
The Moon represents the bureaucratic heads and top administrators that carry out
the work of the government and also provide sustenance or continuity between
successive governments. Due to a bifurcation between internal and external security
functions, the internal security and police is ruled by Mars and indicates all those
involved in the maintenance of law and order. Mercury signifies the aspiring
political leaders vying for the position of the head of the state and such leaders in
parliament. Jupiter signifies advisers and ministers that are politically appointed as
Jupiter is the adviser to the Sun. Venus represents advisers in the bureaucracy and
lower level bureaucrats themselves as Venus is the adviser to the Moon. Rhu and
Ketu represent the armed forces and signify people on the border. Rhu signifies
those that have to go to foreign lands or beyond the border like the secret service
agents (espionage). Ketu signifies those protecting the border from within and is the
regular army (including navy, air force etc.) Kalyaverma (Srvali) opines that the
native acquires the qualities and abilities of the strongest of the planets.

Parsara uses the word net which means one who leads.

Some astrologers opine that Mercury gives a green complexion, but I have yet to come across any human being who is green
in complexion! Some astrologers feel that Mercury indicates the very dark complexion based on the word durvyma used by
Parsara which refers to the colors of the durv grass (dry grass is brownish) and yma means dark or black.

Mars indicates a celibate male and represents boys till marriage whereas
Saturn signifies girls after puberty but before marriage. Mercury signifies little girls
before puberty. The adult male is signified by Jupiter while the female is signified by
Venus. These planets indicate the period when the people marry and procreate. In
the middle age, the Sun signifies the male as the head of the family while the Moon
signifies the female as the head of home. Old age sets in and Saturn signifies the
stage where sexual desire is dead or defunct. One of the partners dies and the male
widower is indicated by Rhu while Ketu indicates the widow.
Sexual preferences are another issue altogether and Mercury or Saturn
connected with matters of sexuality indicate homosexuality as they are eunuch
planets.
2.5.3 Gua (inner nature)
Parsara

Mars as per the dictum kujavad ketu. The nodes are also considered to be of tmas
gua. }
Gua is a property or characteristic of all created things. In the sakhya
philosophy it is an ingredient or constituent of prkti as the primary quality of all
created or existing beings. The first division is into three parts satva, rajas and
tmas i.e. goodness, passion and darkness or virtue, foulness and ignorance
respectively. From the energy viewpoint, rajas gua has excessive energy (passion)
that causes desire and creation. Tmas has low energy (darkness) that causes
ignorance and death while satva has balanced energy that causes virtue and
sustenance.

The natural years of the planets is the first method of timing the events
including the longevity. The three basic methods of timing longevity are Pinyu,
Naisargikyu and Ayu. The choice of the particular system, according to
Satycarya is based on the stronger among the Sun (Pinyu), Moon (Naisargikyu)
or Lagna (Ayu). Further, among the Sun, Moon and Lagna, the Moon is the most
important indicator for longevity, health and cure. Accordingly, Parsara gives the
advice to review the years contributed by the planets based on Naisargikyu and
determine their periods of influence (Naisargika da). Refer paper presented at
