985 1840 (Dec 3): 1 d. black, plate 7, lettered MB, a four margined example, close but clear at
left, applied on consignee's letter written from Gibraltar to Brighton, tied by red Maltese
Cross with London (Dec 15) and Brighton datestamps on reverse. Interesting contents to the
letter describe a missive being sent to the addressee from Malta: "I received one (a letter) last
week from Malta which doubtless would have been hugely interesting had it only reached me
earlier ... it declares itself inside to be going some short cut in a Man of War it has I daresay
gone by way of China ... the poor dear letter is so cut about and vinegared it is more like a
red cabbage ... ". A most extraordinary usage and most probably the earliest known letter
from Gibraltar bearing an adhesive stamp. Signed Ferchenbauer. 2 6 2'500 (€ 1'675 )

To have a better chance of being successful as a postal bidder we recommend setting a limit for the total amount of your
purchases (excl. 19.5% buyers premium): for example, bidding on a range of lots with a total amount of CHF 10’000 and setting
a limit of CHF 7’500 for your purchases means that the total for lots knocked down to you will not exceed the limit you have set.
We know from experience that postal bidders are rarely successful on all lots. On the other hand, you might have been interested
in other lots as well, but not knowing which lots would be knocked down to you and being worried to spend more than a certain
amount, you did not bid on them. Giving a total purchase limit (see also the Bid Form in this catalogue) enables you to have
a better chance of being a more successful postal bidder!
