For the most part, going wine tasting is about the easiest thing in
the world, especially here in California where wineries and tasting
rooms abound. You can find wineries specializing in red wines of all
types, those that are famous for their white wines and others who
pour sparkling wine. It is a matter of doing a little research and
planning your day. Most tasting rooms open around 10 a.m. and
close between 4:30 and 6 p.m. Here are some tips that have proven
to be helpful and are designed to help make the sensory adventure of
wine tasting all the more enjoyable.
Before you start off pack a few essentials: Water (plenty of water)
and something to snack on crackers or a baguette. Many wineries
have picnic areas and there are plenty of delis and bakeries that can
make up a lunch for you, or make your own. Which brings us to
eating and drinking, the kind that doesnt directly involve wine.
Be sure to nibble during the day and make sure you make time for
lunch. Two tips: drink at least twice as much water as you do wine,
and remember that you dont have to drink everything poured into
your glass. There is a reason tasting bars have dump buckets and a
pitcher of water to wash out your glass.
Dont be afraid to ask questions. Time and time again I have heard
knowledgeable winery workers say that there is no such thing as a
stupid question, and they mean that.
You can drink what you want, in the order you want. If you only like
www.WineCountryThisWeek.com
reds, say so; if you dont like sweet wines, speak up. But the idea of
starting with whites, then going on to reds and then sweet wines is a
good guide. Zinfandel is red. I am sure you know that but it never
hurts to remind everyone.
If there is a particular wine you want to try and it is not on the list,
ask. There might be a bottle around that was opened for a trade
tasting or by the winemaker. Most tasting rooms are happy to pour a
little if you show enthusiasm.
Take notes on the wines you most enjoyed.
Take advantage of tours when the winery offers them, but keep in
mind that they take anywhere from 20 minutes to well over an hour,
so one a day is plenty.
Buy wines that you can only find at the winery. These often include
smaller (375 ml) bottles of limited production Ports or dessert wines.
Dont buy a wine you can get at a supermarket back home. Youll pay
more, and besides, whats the point?
Look for tasting rooms in towns. Many of these are cooperative
tasting rooms, where in one place you might find wines from a dozen
or more small-to-medium premium producers. They are scattered
throughout the area and more are opening all the time.
Dont give too much thought to ratings and vintages. Its like art: if
you like it, its a good wine. It is as simple as that.
Remember that you dont have to do the driving. It takes no more
than a phone call hire a transportation company to do the driving.

Ernie Weir
HAGAFEN CELLARS
Experience the Wine Welcome of a Lifetime!
BY MONICA L. DASHWOOD
32
Hagafen Cellars, located on the Silverado Trail in Napa Valley, welcomes you
with open arms to their friendly, warm and down to earth tasting room. Come,
sit, relax and sample exceptional wines amongst the outdoor scents of rosemary
and citrus, soft sounding wind chimes, and Italian landscaped gardens. Ernie
and Irit Weir started Hagafen Cellars in 1979, with their first commercially
released vintage in 1980. Over the years, Ernie has perfected the craft of
winemaking and plays an active role in every aspect of the business, grape
growing to winemaking to marketing the finest wines. Hagafen Cellars has many
fine wines from which to choose. They produce 8 to 10 varietals each year and
offer 20 distinct wines on their tasting menu, including Cabernet Franc,
Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Roussanne, Sauvignon
Blanc, Syrah, and White Riesling. They also produce a Brut Cuve sparkling
wines as well as a late harvest dessert wine. Their small lot releases start with
superb fruit which highlights each of the regions from which grapes are sourced.
For this reason, their production is only 8,000 cases, coming from their own 20
acre estate and from other select growers primarily from Napa Valley.
As for new releases, Hagafen Cellars is excited to offer their 2007 Napa
Valley Brut Cuve Late Disgorged Sparkling wine. This elegant bubbly is full
bodied, clean and beautiful just like a star with its soft, slightly rosy, hue and
multitude of tiny shining bubbles. Hagafen is also proud of its Estate Bottled
2008 Napa Valley Syrah, produced from their newest vineyard: Weir Family
Vineyard III in the Coombsville AVA, along the Eastern foothills of the Valley.
This wine opens with a nose that jumps out of the glass with its bright Bing
cherry and black pepperiness. Also be sure to taste their newly released 2012
Estate Bottled Napa Valley Coombsville Dry White Riesling, a wine that is sure
to please!
Tours are offered daily at 11 a.m., by appointment only, except Saturdays
and holidays. Hagafen Cellars offers their award winning wines in their tasting
room, on-line, in select stores and restaurants, and also through their three
distinct exclusive wine clubs: Prix, Hagafen and RS (residual sugar).

advance and $15 at the event. Some activities at select wineries may
have additional fees, but all participating wineries have generous
offerings for April in Carneros participants included in the cost of
admission.
A non-profit organization, Hospitality de los Carneros raises
money to support scholarship funding for both Santa Rosa Junior
College and Napa Valley College through the ticket sales of the two
annual events. These are both true community colleges, active in
both communities and educating many in each valleys wine and
hospitality industries.
April in Carneros is the perfect time to drive the back roads of the
Carneros region seeking out the next great Pinot Noir or Chardonnay.
This year 16 wineries will open their doors for the annual spring
tasting including Adastra Wines, Anaba Wines, Bonneau Wines, Ceja
Vineyards, Cline Cellars, Enkido Wines, Homewood Winery, Jacuzzi
Family Vineyards, Keating Wines, Larson Family Winery,
Meadowcroft Wines, Poseidon Vineyard & Obsidian Ridge, Robledo
Family Winery, Schug Carneros Estate Winery, Ty Caton Vineyards,
Tin Barn Vineyards. Maps and directions are available at all locations
as well as on the website.

More than 90% of the wines are from the highly anticipated 2013 vintage
The Napa Valley Vintners invites wine enthusiasts and collectors to
preview the one-of-a-kind, limited production wines that will be
available at Premiere Napa Valley in February 2015. Created solely for
the Premiere Napa Valley portfolio and produced in quantities as
small as 60 and never more than 240 bottles, the wines will be sold
exclusively to members of the wine trade during the nonprofit trade
associations annual barrel tasting and auction. Descriptions of the 225
lots can be viewed at premierenapawines.com
For Premiere Napa Valley, every winemaker crafts a blend that is
truly unique from all of the other wines they produce, notes Michael
Scholz of the St. Supry Estate Vineyards and Winery team that is
chairing the 2015 Premiere Napa Valley Steering Committee. The
barrel they create is the only barrel of its kind making Premiere Napa
Valley one of the rarest wine brands in the world.
Though reminiscent of how Hospice de Beaune wines are
produced, the process is uniquely American. For example,
winemakers might use a grape variety they would not normally bottle
as a stand-alone wine under their own brand. The grapes may be
sourced from a specific part of a single vineyard, or the wine might be
aged using a unique barrel regime not regularly employed by the
winery. Some of the most novel offerings are produced as joint lots
multiple vintners who collaborate to create a blend exclusively for the
Premiere Napa Valley brand.
The wines are offered as futures at the auction only to licensed
members of the wine trade for resale to their customers and ultrapremium wine collectors. Each bottle is hand-labeled, individually
numbered and signed by the winemaker, similar to a limited edition
work of fine art.
The Premiere Napa Valley barrel tasting and auction on February
21 is the culmination of a week rich in wine tasting and educational
and professional networking
experiences hosted by both the
NVV and the vintners who have
crafted the wines. Now in its 19th
year, Premiere Week, as it has
come to be known, is an annual
homecoming for trade and media
to spend intimate time with Napa
Tantalizing
Valley winery owners and

Best Winery in Napa award for 5 consecutive years in the Bay Area A-List.
2012 Winery of the Year by Connoisseurs guide to fine wine.
Founded in 1992, today Frank Family owns 380 acres of the finest vineyard land
in Napa Valley and has one of the biggest word-of-mouth followings in the wine
country. First constructed as the Larkmead Winery in 1884, the historic stone
building on the property was refinished with native sandstone from the nearby
hills in 1906. The massive stone edifice is considered one of the finest structures
in the Napa Valley; it appears on the National Register of Historical Places and is
listed as a Point of Historical Interest in the state of California.

BALLETTO VINEYARDS
Some of the Best Wines in Russian River Valley!
BY MONICA L. DASHWOOD
BALLETTO VINEYARDS

Off the beaten path lies a place worth visiting, savoring, tasting. Balletto Vineyards,
located in the Russian River Valley, promises a one of a kind tasting experience, best
known for their award-winning Pinot Noir, second to none in the wine country.
Balletto produces nine varietals, along with seven vineyard-designate Pinot Noirs and
three different Chardonnays. At the tasting room, a large patio area provides a serene
outdoor setting with a water fountain and spring flowers bordering the picnic tables.
Inside, the atmosphere is warm, relaxed and inviting as a knowledgeable staff stands
behind their wines of great depth and distinction. They talk about each vintage with
passion and detail, but in the end, they just want you to have fun with the wine, savoring
each drop.
Out of the 600 acres of Russian River Valley Vineyards, grape grower, John Balletto and
winemaker Anthony Beckman harvest only 50 acres to make the Balletto wines. By
selecting ten percent of the best grapes, they can maintain the finest quality and style in
their wines. No reservations are required for self-guided vineyard tours and the area
provides walking trails around the lush Laguna.
Theres a new wine on the table, Ballettos 2011 Brut Ros, a beautiful sparkling wine
worth tasting. Its sultry, elegant and luscious; sophisticated yet full of fun. The vintage is a
delicate shade of pink, with aromas of ripening strawberries tinged with citrus. On the
palate, tiny bubbles make the tongue tingle before yielding to an array of complex flavors
of crisp apples with hints of strawberry and citrus, with subtle notes of baked brioche and
a zesty minerality that leads into a seductively dry finish that leaves you craving more.
Yummy! The only thing is this wine will go fast and furious with only 260 cases
produced. The Balletto Brut Ros is created to satisfy the fine Champagne lover, while
exemplifying the individuality that the Russian River appellation has to offer. This is a
must try!
Lastly, dont miss the highly anticipated Barrel Tasting ticketed event on March 6-8,
and 13-15. Attendees will have access to over 140 wineries, including Balletto Vineyards.
For more information go to www.wineroad.com. Tickets sell out fast!
Come for Ballettos unique wine tasting experience, away from the crowds, steeped in
the beauty of good wines and fine times!

LOXTON CELLARS
Connecting Place and Taste
BY SHOSHANA HEBSHI
www.WineCountryThisWeek.com
Its in the little things that Chris Loxton, the winemaker and owner
of Loxton Cellars, does to create an environment in which visitors not
only taste the wine, but understand its journey made from vine to
glass.
The tasting reinforces what they see, he says, connecting place
and taste.
Loxton Cellars, an unassuming small vineyard just off Highway 12
in the north end of Glen Ellen, comprises just five acres of grapes. Its
tasting room lives in a former racing car garage that now is filled with
oak barrels, the aroma of fermenting grapes and Loxtons joie de vivre.
On most days, wandering into the tasting room, a visitor will find
Loxton, tall and lanky, ready to explain his low-tech process and
introduce people to the small winery experience.
Loxton has a slate of wines to taste that rotates each month. But,
there will always be a Syrah, a Chardonnay and his award-winning
port. As a visitor sips his wines, Loxton can wax poetic about the
connection between what you see and what you taste.
Theres no secrets, he says in a thick Australian accent. His family,
all back in the Adelaide area Down Under, has been growing grapes for
decades. But Loxton has departed from his fathers region of
commercial winemaking to create wine that pairs with food and is part
of a meal.
These are wines without compromise, he says.
Loxtons wines are sold only in the tasting room and at select local
restaurants. He believes in staying local, and he doesnt have far to go
when sourcing his grapes. Within the five acres in Glen Ellen, he gets
40% of what he needs for most of his wines. He sources from other
Sonoma County vineyards for other varietals, such as Chardonnay and
Pinot Noir.
Visitors who want a truly in-depth experience can book a reserve
tasting, which Loxton conducts daily at 1 p.m. in an adjacent room
also filled with wine barrels. This room also houses a giant oak barrel
from Vicard, the first of its kind in the United States, Loxton says,
where he is creating a Grenache blend.
Saturdays and Sundays Loxton, in keeping with his Australian
roots, conducts a walkabout for visitors, in which he leads a tour of
the vineyard, through 120-year-old vines and younger vines. These
must also be reserved ahead of time.
And, if that isnt enough of a personal touch, Loxton will sign
bottles purchased in the tasting room, adding little notes and his
signature.
Groups will always be kept separate from small parties in the tasting
room, and on a nice day, visitors can taste al fresco at a picnic table
among the vines.
For more information, to book a walkabout or reserve tasting, visit
www.loxtonwines.com.

Coro Mendocino
Established in 2000, Coro is the only American example of
winemakers coming together to set standards for a class of wines to
represent a particular wine region. That region is Mendocino County,
a diverse area that encompasses a variety of climates and soils, and
boasts a mixture of multi-generational winemakers with deep Italian
roots alongside newcomers with extensive and varied backgrounds.
Coro means chorus in Italian, and it represents the crafting of the
Mendocino terroir into wines that sing on the palate.
Every Coro wine is a signature blend, individually crafted in
Mendocino County from 100 percent Mendocino County grapes, in
strict accordance with the Coro Mendocino bylaws. Each Coro wine
must lead with between 40-70 percent Zinfandel and may be blended
with up to nine named varietals, honoring the Old Italian field
blends of Mendocino. Every bottle is held to strict protocols, and
must be aged at least one year in the barrel and one year in the bottle,
followed by blind-tasting by the winemakers before it can be deemed
a Coro wine.
