Anti-cancer drugs may not be entirely to blame for the mild mental impairment
suffered by some cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, a study found.
The findings suggest the forgetfulness and other symptoms associated with socalled "chemo brain" may be caused by cancer itself rather than potent cancer-fitting
medicines, researchers said in a study published on Monday in the online version of the
journal Cancer.
In a study of 84 breast cancer patients diagnosed with neurogical problem, 35
percent reported cognitive problems before receiving chemotherapy. Chemotherapy did
cause a mental decline in the other patients.
The study was the first of its kind to find cognitive impairment in cancer
patients prior to receiving chemotherapy. Other symptoms of the disorder include
difficulty in speaking or interacting socially.
In the past, doctors may have assumed all cognitive impairment found after
chemotherapy stemmed from anti-cancer drugs because physicians never examined a
patient for metal decline prior to treatment, said Dr. Christina Myers, professor of
neuropsychology at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston and one of the study's
authors.
About half the patients in the study reported recovering from the mental
symptoms within a year of receiving chemotherapy.
The findings are important because some cancer patients have been hesitant
to undergo chemotherapy out of fear of developing post-treatment problems, including
chemo brain.
Cancer doctors are not sure why patients with cancer develop neurological
problems. Cancer cells could create substances that impair the nervous system, or the
immune system could create an inflammatory response to cancer that could be
responsible for the fuzzy mental symptoms, Myers said.

7; What is the text about?

a. Breast cancer.
b. Chemotherapy.
c. Post treatment problems.
d. The cause of mental decline suffered by cancer patients.

9; Which of the following statement is TRUE according to the text?
a. Chemotherapy causes a mental decline to all patients.
b. The doctors assume that cognitive improvement stems from anti-cancer drugs.
c. Within a year of receiving chemotherapy, half the patients in the study are
recovering.
d. Cancer cells could create substances that impair the nervous system.

Read the following text to answer questions 12 and 16.
A scientist begins an investigation by observing an object or an activity.
Observation typically involves one or more of the human senses - hearing, sight, smell,
taste, and touch. Scientists typically use tool to aid in their observation. For example, a
microscope helps view away to be seen by the unaided eye.
Scientists typically apply their observation skills to an experiment. An
experiment is any kind of trial that enables scientist to control and change the
conditions under which events occur. It can be something extremely simple, such as
heating a solid to see when it melts, or something highly complex, such as bouncing a
radio signal off the surface of a distant planet. Scientists typically repeat experiments,
sometimes many times, in order to be sure that the results were not affected by
unforeseen factors.
Most experiments involve real objects in the physical world, such as electric
circuits, chemical compounds, or living organisms. However, with the rapid progress in
electronics, computer simulations can now carry out some experiments instead. If they
are carefully constructed, these simulations or models can accurately predict how real
objects will behave.

"Koko where are you?" Hamid called softly to his cat. "He may have wondered to
the harbour," said Hamid's friend, Muchtar.
Soon the boys were at the harbour's gate, marked "Gate 6', of Priok Harbour. Two
policemen were guarding the gate. The boys moved quietly so that the policemen would
not see them. The boys knew the policemen would chase them away if they saw them.
The boys knew Koko was somewhere near the gate because they had heard him

Muchtar saw two men standing beside the taxi. The men were talking in low tones. Then,
one of them opened the car-boot, and Hamid saw Koko crouching among some bags.
Not long after that, the men left. Hamid quickly ran to the taxi. Finding the boot
unlocked, Hamid lifted the lid. What a shock! There were bags of explosive! At the
moment, Hamid heard the men coming back. He swept Koko into his arms and ran back
to where Muchtar was keeping watch.

Jack brought them happily. When he told his mother about this, his mother

Silkworms live for only two or three days after laying eggs. About 36,000 to
50,000 eggs are laid, and these are carefully stored at the silkworm farm until they are
ready to hatch. The eggs hatch into caterpillars, which feed on mulberry leaves. Soon,
the caterpillars are ready to spin their cocoons. Not all caterpillars can spin silk cocoons.
Only the caterpillars of a silkworm moth known as 'Bombyx mori' can do such spinning.
This caterpillar has special glands which secrete liquid silk through its lower lip.
The liquid produced later hardens to form fine strands. The caterpillar makes its cocoons
using these strands. The threads on the outside of the cocoon are rough, while those
inside are soft and smooth.
Some fully-spun cocoons are heated. This kills the pupa inside. The cocoons are
then put into hot water to loosen the fine threads. Finally, these threads are reeled off the
cocoons.
The length of unbroken thread produced by a single cocoon measures about oneand-half kilometers. Being twisted together several of these threads make single woven
materials.

The sense of taste is one's of person's five senses. We taste with help of tastebuds in the tongue.
There are four main kinds of taste: sweet, sour, salty, and bitter. All other tastes
are just mixtures of two or more of these main types.
The surface of the tongue has more than fifteen thousand taste-buds (or cells).
These are connected to the brain by special nerves which send the so-called 'taste
messages.'
When the tongue comes into contact with food of any kind, the taste-buds will
pick up the taste. The nerves then send a message to the brain. This will make us aware
of the taste. All this happened in just a few seconds.
There are four kinds of taste-buds, each of which is sensitive to only a particular
taste. These four groups are located in different parts of the tongue.
The taste-buds for salty and sweet tastes are found round the tip of the tongue
and along its sides. Sour tastes can be picked up only at the sides of the tongue. The
taste-buds for the bitter taste are found at the innermost edge of the tongue. There are
taste-buds at the centre of the tongue.
The senses of smell and sight-can affect taste. The good smell of food increases
its taste. Similarly, attractive colours can make food appear tastier and more delicious. If
food does not smell good or is dull-coloured, it will look tasty and may not taste good at
all.
Very hot or cold sensations can make the taste-buds insensitive. Food that is too
hot or too cold, when placed in the mouth, will have no tastes at all.

To improve comfort and cleanliness at our school a number of dust bins should
be increased.
When we look at classroom, school corridors and school yard, there are papers,
mineral water cups, straws, and napkins here and there. The condition of uncleanliness
and discomfort really hinders learning and teaching environment. Litters thrown
carelessly cause disease, especially empty plastic cups or glasses. They can be filled out
with water coming from the rain. This can be placed for dengue mosquitoes to spread
out. Besides, these rubbish can deteriorate the scene. Well painted wall and green school
yard do not mean anything if litters are scattered everywhere.
Anyway I notice that most of the students in our school have responsibilities for
their school environment. They put their litters on the proper places. But some are not
diligent enough to find the dust bins. The numbers of dust bins in our schools are not
enough. More dust bins should be put beside each of steps, outside of the classrooms,
and some more along the corridors. Probably one dust bin should be in every ten meters.
So when the students want to throw away their litters, they can find the dust bins easily.
When school is equipped with sufficient dust bins, we do not have problems of
filth and discomfort any more. Our school will be very clean and become a nice place to
study.

a. They can prevent litters
b. They can save janitor's energy
c. Students are asked to clean them

35. What is the writer's suggestion?

Rain
Rain always comes from clouds. But where do clouds come from? How does all
the water get into the sky?
Think about your bathroom. There is hot water in your bath. Steam goes up from
the hot water. The steam makes small clouds in the bathroom. These warm clouds meet
the cold walls and windows. These we see small drops of water on the walls and
windows.
The world is like your bathroom. The
water in the oceans is warm when the sun
shines on it. Some of this water goes up into
the sky and makes clouds. The wind carries
the clouds for hundreds of kilometers. The
clouds meet the cold air in the sky. Then
we'll see drops of water after the
condensation of clouds to water. The drops
of water are rain.
The rain falls and runs into rivers.
Rivers run into oceans. And the water from the oceans changes into clouds and becomes
rain. So water is always moving from oceans to clouds to rain rivers to oceans.

Death penalty for serious criminals has been discussed by our experts. Those
who agree say that death penalty will scare the criminals off. However, those who

In Switzerland, this penalty does not exist. Most people argue that the possibility

Those who agree argue that there is no use to feed the terrorists in prison with
their money. When they get out, they will create a lot of trouble by blackmailing and

Some of the world's finest roads make use of bodies of water. They are called
canals.
Canals are man made waterways. They are usually straight and narrow. But they are
filled with water. They connect rivers and lakes, oceans and lakes, rivers and rivers, and
oceans and oceans so that boats and ships can go from one to the other.
Most canals are used for transportation. Barges, boats, and ships carry goods
over canals. Some are used to irrigate land or to carry sewage from large cities. Canals
also reduce the cost of shipping goods and offer travel short cuts.
Canals even go over hills and mountains. But you know that water can't flow up
a hill; so how can the water and boats in a canal go up a hill?
Something called a lock is used. It is a giant tank. The tank is big enough to hold
a long boat. The boat floats into the tank, and the doors behind it are closed to lock the
boat in there. Then more water is let into the tank. When the tank is full of water, the

20

Bahasa Inggris
tank door in front of the boat is opened and the boat floats out. The boat floats higher
and higher as the water rises. It floats either out into a higher part of the canal or into
another tank or lock, which will lift it still higher.
To go down the hill on the other side, the boat enters a lock that is full of water.
As the water is let out of the lock, the boat will float lower and lower. So lock makes it
possible for boats or ships to move from one water level to another.

Mangrove Trees
A mangrove is a tropical marine tree or shrub of the genus Rhizopora. Mangroves
have special aerial roots and saltfiltering tap roots that enable them to thrive in brackish
water (brackish water is salty, but not as salty as sea water).
There are several species of mangrove trees found all over the world. Some
prefer more salinity, while others like to be very close to a large fresh water source (such
as a river). Some prefer areas that are sheltered from waves. Some species have their
roots covered with sea water every day during high tide. Other species grow on dry land,
but are still Dart of the ecosystem.
Mangroves need to keep their trunk and leaves above the surface of the water.
Yet they also need to be firmly attached to the ground so they are not ~roved by waves.
There are three types of mangrove roots that play an important role for it:
1; Support roots which directly pierce the soil.
2; Level-growing roots which twist upwards and downwards, with the upwards twists
emerging on the water surface.

21

Bahasa Inggris

3; Level-growing roots whose downward twist (sub-roots) appear on the water surface.

Petroleum products, such as gasoline, kerosene, home heating oil, residual fuel
oil and lubricating oils, come from one source. Crude oil is found below the earth surface,
as well as under large bodies of water, from a few hundred feet below the surface to as
deep as 25.000 feet into the earth interior. Crude oil is obtained by drilling a hole through
the earth, but sometimes more dry holes are drilled than those producing oil. Pressure at
the source, or pumping, forces the crude oil to the surface.
Crude oil wells flow at varying rates, from ten to thousands of barrels per hour.
Petrolium products vary greatly in physical appearance: thin, thick, transparent, or
opaque. Their chemical compositions are made up of only two elements: carbon and
hydrogen, which from compounds called hydrocarbons. Other chemical elements found
in the union with the hydrocarbons are few and are classified as impurities. Trace
elements are also found, but these are of such minute quantities that they are
disregarded.

Breaking and Entering is an unusual film. Will and Sandy are two architects
working on a major urban renewal project in the King's Cross section in London. The area
is unsafe and ready for such a project. Will and Sandy move their offices into a nearby
vacant were house.
Will has to deal with constant burglaries at his new office. One night, he saw Miro
trying to break into the building. He chased Miro to his run down apartment block and
watched him return home to his mother, Amira, a Bosnian immigrant who makes a living
tailoring clothes. Soon, Will 'meet' Amira and they begin an affair. And Amira learns that
Will holds the key of her son's future. How far will this mother go to protect her son?
Breaking and Entering is a very interesting film, but it is almost entirely character driven.
This is not a bad thing although in the film we are exposed to a story or action driven.
Anthony Minghella, the director, creates some of the most believable, interesting
characters these actors have ever played. It is almost painful to watch them on their
journey. Each of the characters makes decisions affecting how their lives will play out or
change and these decisions and actions affect the story. The characters aren't reacting to
the story. They are changing it.

have ever played.

Higher Education for Women
In this modern era, there are still some parents, who are reluctant about sending
their daughters to co- Illege. The narrow attitude shown to women's education is largely
due to the traditional role of women in society. A woman is expected to be a wife and a
mother. Most parents believe that if their daughter gets married and chooses to be a
housewife, then the higher education will be a waste. However, an educated woman is
not only a better wife but also contributes something to the society.
Nowadays, more and more women are successfully combining their career and
marriage. Educated women are richer both emotionally and financially. They are able to
find an outlet fot their monotonous drudgery of their housekeeping. They bring ore
satisfaction and contentment to their lives.
Depriving girls of higher education is crass discrimation. Times have changed;
modern society needs the talents of its people regardless of gender. Today, women work alongside men. In fact, in the last few decades, women have
made outstanding contributions to society.
Women should be given the freedom to be educated whether or not they get married or
go to work after finishing their education, because it is only through education that a
woman will find herself useful and discover what she wants in life. A woman who works is
not an insult to her husband. Conversely, her husband should feel proud of her
achievements since marriage is actually an equal partnership.
Therefore, parents should not think that girls should receive less education just because
they will get married one day.
25. What makes parents reluctant to send their daughters to college?
A. They think education will be a waste.
B. More women are successful in their career.
C. It is a waste for women to go to college.
D. Traditional roles of women in society do not need high education.
E. They have to contribute something to the society.

A. To put forward a point of view or argument about higher education for women.
B. To tell the parents in this modern era about how to educate their daughters.
C. To persuade readers what should and should not do about education.
D. To explain to readers about how to give education for their daughters.
E. To describe the fact about how some parents educate their daughter.
27. Modern society needs....
A. Educated career women.
B. Married women.
D. Good housewives and mothers.

The following text is for questions 29 to 33.
There are a lot of discussions as to whether children should be given homework or
not.
Some people claim that children do enough work in school already. They also argue
that children have hobbies that they want to do after school, such as sports or music. A
further point they make is that a lot of homework is pointless and doesn't help the child
learn at all.
However, there are also strong arguments against this point of view. Parents and
teachers argue that it is important to find out whether children can work on their own
without the support from the teacher. They say that the evening is a good time for
children to sit down and think about what they have learned in school.
Furthermore, they claim that the school day is too short to get anything done that
needs doing and it makes sense to send home tasks like independent reading or further
writing tasks that don't need teacher's support.
On balance, I think that some homework is a good idea but that it should only given
at the weekend when children have more time.

After some time, the wing mended and, because the bird did not want the farmer to
have kept on arguing with his wife all the time, it decided to go back to its nest.
When the farmer discovered that the bird was gone, he was so upset that he went
out to look for it. Eventually, he found it again, and was greeted happily by the whole
family of the bird. As a sign of their thanks for his care and attention, the birds gave him a

Answer questions 20 to 24 based the following text.
HOUSE HUSBANDS' HEART RISK
Most people assume that life in the rat race is bad for your health. But reversing the traditional gender
roles, being a house husband is a stressful business, according to the latest research by American scientists. By
giving up their jobs in order to become house husbands, men increase their risk of heart attack or coronary
disease by as much as 82%, according to research based on 10 year study of 2.500 people in Boston, USA.
According to Dr Elaine Eaker, the key to the problem is that some men became stressed about
performing a role not traditionally assign to them by society. Men who stay at home tend not to have the same
levels of support from friends and family as women do the same.
Jack O'Sullivan, of the Fathers Direct group, was quoted as saying: "Society expects the main career
should be a woman and society is structured around that. Day care is called mother and to filler groups and
some men feel awkward about belonging to those groups.
Professor Gary Cooper, a psychologist at the University of Manchester, said many men tend to
underestimate the task of caring for a family. He said "Most men think being a house husband involves putting
on a bit of washing, taking the kids to school and then putting their feet up with a cup of coffee.
They are crazy. Most men are not used to performing a variety of activities simultaneously (the kind
of multi-tasking which is second nature to most women)."
It is estimated that men have taken over the main homemaker's role in one in seven homes, as increasing
numbers of women become the main breadwinner. The study also found that women in high-powered jobs were
more likely to develop heart disease than those in more junior positions.

The Houses of the Toraja
The ethnic groups in the mountain regions of southwest and central Sulawesi
(Celebes) are known by the name of Toraja, which has come to mean "Those who
live upstream"
or "Those who live in the mountains". Their name is in fact derived from the word
Raja, which in Sanskrit means "King". The society is hierarchically structured (the
noblemen are called rengnge, the ordinary people to makaka, and the slaves to
kaunan) birth determines which rank a person will occupy.
The distinctive features of the traditional houses (tongkonan) of the Toraja are the
"Buffalo horns", the roof design and the rich decoration on the walls. The buffalo
is
a symbol of status, courage, strength, and fighting spirit.
Designed as a representation of the universe, the tongkonan is constructed in three
parts: the upper world (the roof), the world of humans (the middle of the building), and the underworld (the
space under the floor). The highly distinctive roofs constructed by the Toraja have given rise to various
ingenious interpretations. Certainly the roof is something of deep significance for the Toraja, and even today
they build "Modern" (in other words houses built with cement) houses with such roofs.

The following text is for Question 28 to 31
Antibiotic is a drug produced by certain microbes. Antibiotics destroy other microbes that damage human
tissues. They are used to treat a wide variety of diseases, including gonorrhea, tonsillitis, and tuberculosis.
Antibiotics are sometimes called "Wonder drugs" because they can cure diseases such as meningitis, pneumonia,
and scarlet fever. But, when the antibiotics are overused or misused, these drugs make a person sensitive being
attacked by a superbug.
Antibiotics do not always distinguish between harmless and dangerous microbes. If a drug destroys too
many harmless microorganism, the pathogenic ones (the dangerous microbes) will have a greater chance to
multiply. This situation often leads to the development of a new infection called suprainfection.

38

Bahasa Inggris
Extensive use of some antibiotics may damage organs and tissues. For example, streptomycin, which is
used to treat tuberculosis, has caused kidney damage and deafness.
Resistance to antibiotics may be ecquired by pathogenic microbes. The resistant microbes transfer
genetic material to non-resistant microbes and cause them to become resistant. During antibiotic treatment, nonresistant microbes are destroyed, but resistant types survive and multiply.
To avoid the side effect of antibiotics, you'd better not urge your doctor to prescribe antibiotics. Keep in
mind that antibiotics are only useful for bacterial infections and have no effect on viruses, so they cannot be
used for chicken pox, measles, and other viral diseases
28. Which diseases cannot be antibiotics?
A. Tonsillitis
D. Tubercolosis
B. Meningitis
E. Scarlet fever
C. Chicken pox
29. What are discussed in paragraph two and four?
A. Both paragraphs describe how antibiotics work
B. Both paragraphs tell about the effects of misusing antibiotics

D.Paragraph two tells what causes the pathogenic microbes multiply and paragraph four tells how the unresistant microbes become resistant
E.Paragraph two tells how antibiotics destroy harmless microbes and paragraph four describes how the
pathogenic microbes transfer genetic material to non-resistant microbes
30. Choose one from the following which is not the effect of using antibiotics improperly?
A. Organs and tissues are damaged
B. The pathogenic microbes multiply
C. Harmless microorganisms are destroyed

This text is for Question 32 to 35.
Should performance enhancing drugs be accepted s-ports?
The issue of using drugs to enhance athlete's performance is controversial. Those who agree to the use of
drugs in enhancing performance say that most top players in all sports take drugs to train harder and feel no pain
during play. The trainers, sports doctors, nutritionists, physiotherapists, and managers of the big names make
sure banned substances are taken at the safest and most efficient levels. The main effect of banning such
substances has turned performers and their coaches into liars and cheaters.
On the other hand, some still believe that performance enhancing drugs in sport should be banned.
Performance enhancing drugs are not only prohibited because they violate the spirit of sport but because they
can damage the health of athletes.
I think the idea of allowing them in sports could lead to a situation whereby sportsmen and women are
used as human guinea pigs for a constant flow of new, unregulated substances.
