INTRODUCCIN
Hay quienes afirman que los conceptos abstractos sacan al cerebro de su zona
de confort, y es probable que tengan razn, en cuanto existen miles de
palabras usadas en el da a da de las que se tiene un significante claro pero
cuyo significado es borroso u ocasionalmente desconocido. Qu imagen
viene a la mente de una persona cuando escucha el trmino hbrido?
Orbitales atmicos? Automviles con motores adaptados a electricidad y
gasolina? Animales cuasi mutantes?
La otra postura tuvo sus orgenes en los estudios de Linnaeus, los cuales
pueden contarse entre los primeros en lo que a hibridacin se refiere, quien
tras haber descubierto tres o cuatro hbridos naturales y haberlos nombrado
nuevas especies, se convenci de que todas las especies haban sido
originadas por hibridacin9. Varios de sus contemporneos se opusieron a
esta afirmacin, destacndose Klreuter quien mostr la propensin a la
esterilidad de los hbridos y que las especies hbridas tienden a travs de las
generaciones a volver a la forma de sus padres (dejando fuera la posibilidad
de que constituyeran nuevas especies).

A comienzos del siglo XX el maz era el principal cultivo en los Estados Unidos
de Amrica; sin embargo, su produccin estaba comenzando a estancarse.
Con el apoyo del gobierno y tras ms o menos 26 aos de investigacin, la
primera semilla hbrida comercial de maz para la venta a los campesinos en
cualquier cantidad fue producida en Iowa en 1926 12. Este mismo estado es
un ejemplo claro de la rapidez con que las semillas hbridas fueron adoptadas,
pasando de un uso de menos del 10% en 1935 a ms del 90% 4 aos ms
tarde13.

Por otro parte, los hbridos entre animales exticos son probablemente los que
ms han llamado la atencin meditica, llegando a ser ms conocidos que
hbridos naturales como los cebroides (cebra + otro quido), grolares (oso
polar + oso grizzli) e incluso las mulas (asno + yegua). Los flidos han sido
especialmente propensos a la hibridacin artificial, dando lugar a ligres (len
+ tigresa), trigones (leona + tigre), leopones (leopardo + leona) y tigardos (tigre
+ leopardesa), entre otros. Estas prcticas han sido ampliamente cuestionadas
por grupos ambientalistas quienes alegan la vulneracin de los derechos de
estos animales.
