I would like to thank the committee of ELTI Gramedia 3 rd Anniversary Speech
Competition for holding this competition.

Violence against women and girls is a global issue with 1 in 3 women

across the world experiencing violence. Gender equality or sexism is not a
concept. It's not something we should be striving for. It's a necessity. Equality
is like gravity. We need it to stand on this earth as men and women, and the
misogyny that is in every culture is not a true part of the human condition.
Girls and women have made major strides since 1990, but they have not yet
gained gender equity. All too often, women and girls are discriminated
against in health, education, political representation, labour market, with
negative repercussions for development of their capabilities and their
freedom of choice.
There are several prominent ways in which gender discrimination
continues to play a role in the modern society. Occupational sexism refers to
discriminatory practices, statements and actions based on a persons gender
which occur in a place of employment. Wage discrimination in which mens
wage are usually higher than womans and sexual assault in the workplace
are all examples of occupational sexism. Violence against women, including
sexual assault, domestic violence, and sexual slavery remains a serious
problem around the world. Many also argue that the objectification of women
such as in pornography.
And even there are several countries regulating law about those kind
of sexism cases, yet it still happens everyday, even in the greater amount. In
our country, there is law regulating about sexism, UU No. 7 tahun 1984. For
example the case in Medan, November last year where the family who owns
the house torture their lady housekeepers, and one of them ended up dead.
It was discovered after running for 2 or more years. The solution to this one
major problem is that government should strengthen the law of the country,
make more law regulating about sexism, in order to decrease the number of
sexism. They should make a special institute for woman and childrens rights,
so it will be easier for victims to report the cases and the institute to process
the criminal subject.

The decrease of sexism can lead to a better future of a nation, because

sexism is a thing that a country should be ashamed of. This case makes the
womankind gets a lot of disadvantages. Woman should be respected, not
being discriminated or hurt.
