Specification and functioning of various component in steam power

plantI) Steam Boiler- A boiler is an enclosed vessel that provides a means for combustion heat
to be transferred into water until it becomes heated water or steam. The hot water or steam under
pressure is then usable for transferring the heat to a process. Water is a useful and cheap medium
for transferring heat to a process. When water is boiled into steam its volume increases about
1,600 times, producing a force that is almost as explosive as gunpowder. This causes the boiler to
be extremely dangerous equipment that must be treated with utmost care.

II) Steam turbineA steam turbine is a rotary type of steam engine, having a rotating wheel to which is
secured a series of buckets, blades or vanes, uniformly spaced on its periphery. Steam from
nozzles or guide passage is directed continuously against these buckets, blades or vanes, thus
causing their rotation. Expansion of steam in the nozzles or buckets converts its heat energy into
energy of motion and gives it a high velocity which is expended on the moving wheel or buckets.
The difference in the various types of steam turbines is due to different methods of using the
steam. depending upon the construction and arrangement of the nozzles, steam passages and
buckets. The steam turbine is essentially a high speed machine. It is used to advantage with
direct connection to electric generators, centrifugal pumps and compressors and with geared
connections to rolling mills, fans and other machinery which are run at low speed. The
advantages of steam turbines are: comparatively low initial cost, low expense for maintenance,
small floor space, large overload capacity, exhaust steam is free of oil contamination as no
internal lubrication is needed and high efficiency over a wide range of load conditions. The
steam turbine can be built in a unit of much greater capacity than is practical with the
reciprocating steam engines.

iii) Steam CondenserSteam condensers are devices in which the exhaust steam from the steam engines or
steam turbines is condensed by means of cooling water. The condensate (condensed steam) thus
formed together with the air and other non-condensable gases is continuously removed by pumps
or similar other devices. The primary object of a condenser is to maintain a very low back
pressure on the exhaust side of the piston of the steam engine or the rotor of the steam turbine.
This enables the steam to expand to a greater extent which results in an increase in available
energy for converting into mechanical work.

3. Various circuitsSpecifications and functioningi) Bagass and ash circuitBagass from the storage yard is transferred to the boiler furnace by means of bagass
handling equipment like belt conveyor, bucket elevator, etc., ash resulting from the combustion

of bagass in the boiler furnace collects at the back of the boiler and is removed to the ash storage
yard through the ash handling equipment.
Generally in steam power power plant coal is used as fuel for producing high pressure
and high temperature steam. In this power generation plant bagass from sugar cane is used as
fuel in the boiler.

ii) Air and Flue gas circuit:

Air is taken from the atmosphere to the air preheater. Air is heated in the air preheater
by the heat of flue gas which is passing to the chimney. The hot air is supplied to the furnace of
the bolier. The flue gases after combustion in the furnace pass around the boiler tubes. The flue
gases then passes through a dust collector, economizer and pre-heater before being exhausted to
the atmosphere through the chimney. By this method the heat of the flue gases which would have
been wasted otherwise is used effectively. Thus overall efficiency of the plant is improved. The
pollution of the surrounding atmosphere is caused by the emission of objectable gases and dust
through the chimney. The air pollution and smoke cause nuisance to people surrounding the
planet.

iii) Feed water and steam circuit:

The steam generated in the boiler passes through super heater and is supplied to the
steam turbine. Work is done by the expansion of steam in the turbine and the pressure of steam is
reduced. The expanded steam then passes to the condenser, where it is condensed. The
condensate leaving the condenser is first heated in a l.p. water heater by using the steam taken
from the low pressure extraction point of the turbine. Again steam taken from the high pressure
extraction point of the turbine is used for heating the feed water in the H.P water heater. The hot
feed water is passing through the economizer, where it is further heated by means of flue gases.
The feed water which is sufficiently heated by the feed water heaters and economizer is then fed
into the boiler.

iv) Cooling water circuit:

Abundant quantity of water is required for condensing the steam in the condenser. Water
circulating through the condenser may be taken from various sources such as river or lake,
provided adequate water supply is available from the river or lake throughout the year. If
adequate quantity of water is not available at the plant site, the hot water from the condenser is
cooled in the cooling tower and circulated again.
Advantages of thermal power plants : Initial cost is low compared with hydro-plant.

The power plant can be located near load center, so the transmission losses are
considerably reduced.
The generation of power is not dependent on the natures mercy like hydro plant.
The construction and commissioning of thermal plant requires less period of time than a
hydro plant.
