Homeowners whose properties were submerged

during superstorm Sandy have long believed they were
cheated out of the financial security that their flood insurance was supposed to provide. Recent action by the
federal government means they will now have a chance
to prove it.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency, or
FEMA, runs the National Flood Insurance Program,
which underwrites most residential flood insurance
policies in America. It agreed Wednesday to reopen
nearly 142,000 previously settled claims in instances
where it looks like homeowners may have been shortchanged by their insurer. An additional 2,200 Sandy-related claims are being contested in the courts.

I asked her for butterflies. This is the response I got from Susan Funck,

HAZLET Its such a simple gesture,
saying hi to someone. But it can make a
profound difference.
Thats the backbone of Project Unify, which partners high school students
with special-needs schoolmates to
bridge the gap between what can seem
like two different worlds. The sevenyear-old initiative, founded by Special
Olympics New Jersey and boosted by a grant from
the Walmart Foundation, has taken root in 25 high
schools throughout the state.
Raritan High School is one of them. The Rockets
chapter started with a handful of student partners

rested in her bed.

I was making horrible phone calls, things I
wanted to do alone, she says.
I had to call Monmouth Regional High School
to tell them Hannah wouldnt be starting her
freshman year.
Out of nowhere, a bright blue butterfly appeared by her side.
It hung out for a while, she recalls. It went
back around the side of the house and came back
five times.
Hannah was still here but could no longer
speak clearly. That butterfly landing by my side

during such a difficult moment, it brought such a

sense of peace, Funck says to me.
I ask Funck about other signs.
Hannah told me that every time I see 9:11,
thats her, she answers.
Why are these numbers so significant, I wonder.
Hannah told me that every time she looked at
the clock, 9:11 would be there, Funck tells me.
Every time we see those numbers, we say, Hi,
