INTRODUCTION

In this chapter, the writer will explain about the background, statement of
the problem, objective of study, significance of the study, scope of the problem,
definition of the terms.

1.1

Background of the Research

We need language for communication. It is because language is a great role
for our daily life. On the other hand, language is represented as the way through
which information, thoughts, ideas, and feelings are transferred from one person
to another. Using language, we can create our idea.
The most popular language in the world is English, because English is
international language. In the world, English is used in studying social and exact
sciences: mathematic, politics, economics, education, culture and technology,
which are usually disseminated in English. Thus, English can invite us to know
the world. English is also one of foreign language in Indonesia. In Indonesia,
English has been taught Elementary School, Junior High School and Senior High
School. Indonesia hopes that the next generation can master English. It is used to
make our thinking always new and updating in information. Thus, we can
communicate English fluently by speaking and writing. It can be learned by using
writing and speaking skill.

The four skills in English are speaking, listening, writing and reading.
Clearly, speaking and writing are one of the great role and importance of English
skills. Wrriner (1983: 3) explains that, Of course, the most common forms of
communication speaking and writing depend on words. By speaking and
writing, all people can express their thoughts and feelings to others.
Therefore, the writer would like to explain about the writing skill. It is
because writing can make us know our selves. Goldberg (2011: 25) explains that
Writing is one of ways to understand and find meaning in your life. In writing,
our words can become magic for our life which reflects our selves. We can know
our feeling in sadness, sick, creative, smart, and happy. So, lets try to find your
self by writing!
The writer uses media for teaching learning process; it is Wall Magazine.
Wall Magazine is the magazine which is not arranged, but it is patched on the wall
(the board, etc) (Sukmajati, 2008:7). It should be patched in the wall because it
will make efficient and easy in the publishing. Making likes magazine, It is
because magazine can make enough the content in variety, long duration, and
useful in journalistic.
Nursito (2005: 1), Wall magazine is one of the simplest communication
media in writing mass. Therefore, wall magazine intercede the students and an
English teacher undirected, although it should be useful for the students. Here, the
teacher teaches them creatively and confidently, because they should show their
doing in the class or sometimes out of class. It will be useful for the learning
teaching process.

Then, the writer hopes that the media can be responded by students. It is
also hoped other media can motivate the students in English learning.
According to the writers experience when the writer observed junior high
school (SMP 2 Mejobo Kudus), the writer got information that every grade is in
SMP 2 Mejobo Kudus had eight classes. There were A, B, C, D, E, F, G, and H.
The English teacher always teaches English for them. The writer gives them
minimal score; it is often called Criteria of Minimal Score (Kriteria Ketuntasan
Minimal). The minimal score for them are 72, but the students scores still get
lower score than Criteria of Minimal Score(Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimal).
After knowing it, the writer would select and teach one of the classes
exactly from the eighth grade. The writer found out that they did not pay attention
to write and to arrange English. They were also confused to write something, it
was maybe they didnt know themselves.

Although, teacher always taught

English writing skill every meeting. So, the teacher should not only think more
creatively ways to teach the English writing skill, but also the students should feel
that writing can give them the place for saving, enjoying, and getting knowledge,
idea, and your dream. The writer hopes that the students can response the writing
skill by using wall magazine. It is because wall magazine will make students
getting creative thinking.
Based on the reason above, the writer conducts the research entitled The
Use of Wall Magazine to Improve the Students Writing Skill of the Eighth
Grade Students of SMP 2 Mejobo Kudus in the Academic Year 2011/2012.
