MISSION STATEMENT
The building design and engineering strategy follows the needs of a 21st century healthcare facility
– providing a therapeutic environment that promotes health and well-being, is patient orientated,
intuitive and flexible to future needs. The aim is to design a positive impact building that uses fewer
resources, generates less waste, curbs CO 2 emissions and to save the NHS money over its life-cycle.

ARCHITECTURAL CONCEPTS:

The hospital layout is designed around clinical adjacencies to ensure it is highly functional.

Patient orientated design that promotes health and wellbeing.

Intuitive layout reduces the stresses of wayfinding within the hospital.

Wherever possible natural daylight is introduced and views to the outside are provided.

The facade design follows a modern, simple and efficient statement design.

Each floor is divided into 3 main fire compartments. Each compartment has two independent escape routes

 Solar shading system tracks the sun and
collects electricity via PV technology.
 The structure is braced by concrete shear
walls incorporated into lift cores.
 10kW ground source heat pump used for
under-floor heating in atrium.
 62 PV panels installed on the roof.
SUSTAINABILITY:
 Steel sections have been utilized in the
atrium to provide long spans of column free
space.
 10000L GRP Storage Tank stores sufficient
water to supply 24 hour requirements.
 Fibre optic cables draw natural light down
into corridors.
 Narrow plan design reduces energy costs.
 Rainwater harvesting for toilet flushing and irrigation.
 460kW gas fired, condensing boiler selected
as the primary method of heating water.
 Locally sourced materials & labour specified.
SUBSTRUCTURE:
 Extensive green roof.
 CFA piles are to be utilized due to their low
noise and vibration installation.
 External VIE has been sized to store
3927L of oxygen at -160°C.
 Building management system optimises the use of services.
 144 CFA piles (450mm diameter) are to be
installed to a depth of 23 metres.
 Flexible for future developments in medical science
or management.
PROJECT COSTS:
 Floor slabs are to be ground bearing.
BREEAM Rating: 85.2%.
INFECTION CONTROL:
 Inpatient and outpatient departments separated.
 Clean and dirty corridors provided for operating theatres.
 High ventilation rates throughout patient areas prevent airborne transmission.
 All wash basins are sensor operated
