Students Protest Absence Of Electricity

By Olive Ejang Tebug Ngoh
"We need electricity", "no light no classes", "enough is enough" read some of the placards pasted
at the campuses of Cameroon College of Arts and Sciences, CCASS, Kumba and GTHS Kumba,
Wednesday, November 7.
The students, mostly Francophones who live on campus and are attending examination classes, were
incensed that since their school transformer got burnt two weeks ago, there has been no electricity on
campus.
They were further disgruntled that the schools' administrations have done nothing to resolve the
situation. On that Wednesday, the striking students of both schools invaded the classes and sent the other
students home.
As the students left the schools' compounds, the Principals of CCASS and GTHS, Welle Kunz and
Stephen Mbu Taku, respectively pleaded with the striking students that electricity would be restored in a
short while.
The students told The Post that they could not read at night, have computer classes or any practical
lessons. They said this handicap is already a sign of failure, which the schools are plunging them into.
They threatened to burn the Principals' vehicles if they say things that do not concern the instant return of
electricity.Meme Secondary Education Delegate, Stephen Sube's efforts to dialogue with the students
failed.

Also, the DO for Kumba Central, David Kouam, who tried to dialogue with the students, drove away after
the students smeared his vehicle with mud and threatened to destroy it.
Later, the students left their campuses and mounted barricades, blocking the main road from Kumba to
Buea. As tension heightened, gendarmes from the Kumba Gendarmerie arrived but could not stop the
students. They were later assisted by armed policemen who tear-gassed the protesting students into
hiding.

But as the students resisted, the forces of law and order went mad and followed them into the bush. They
said since the students had refused to dialogue with the administration, they would arrest and detain them.

In the course of the confrontation, the police beat and arrested both students and gatemen, including
passers by around the schools' campuses. The Post learned that the administrative promised the students
that AES Sonel will bring a transformer from Douala and install it in the school.
By press time, the windscreen of the police vehicle had been shattered, while one student had been
arrested.
