Historischer Hintergrund
Die Donau war im 19.Jahrhundert der wichtigste Verkehrs- und Postweg zwischen der Österreich-Ungarischen Monarchie
mit Serbien, Rumänien, den Gebieten des Osmanischen Reiches (später u.a. Bulgarien) und Russland am Schwarzen Meer.
Die politische Situation in den Gebieten entlang der Donau war in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts instabil. Ungarn
löste sich 1866/67 von Österreich, Rumänien gründete sich 1862 durch die Vereinigung der Fürstentümern Moldau und Wa-
lachei. Südlich der Donau bis zur Mündung in das Schwarze Meer lagen die Gebiete des politisch schwachen Osmanischen
Reiches, aus denen nach dem Türkisch-Russischen Krieg 1878 Bulgarien hervor ging und die Dobrudscha an Rumänien
angeschlossen wurde. Serbien hatte sich bereits 1866 aus der türkischen Herrschaft lösen können.

that this handstamp was probably originally manufactured in Constantinople, there being
D.D.S.G. markings of this type for just four towns: Constantinople, Galatz, Ibraila and

Note that this cancellation type shows the date rather than the Ship's number, Tchilinghirian
illustrates the S.S. Sulina on page 164, noting that the ship was hardly larger than a tug-boat

with oval GALAZ 18/4 datestamp of receipt (fig. 810) in blue. A similar cover to this, from the
same correspondence, was in the collection of Franz See, struck with the circular Odessa

10 kr. green, Type II, tied by D.D.S.G. / ODESSA oval handstamp and by oval Ship's
handstamp METTERNICH both in blue (Tchilinghirian fig. 834, 297). Reverse of fine entire with
Galatz arrival cds (May 1) and charged '50' bani postage due in blue crayon on receipt.

5726 1871 (Dec 14): Entire letter from Odessa to Galatz franked by 1867 10 kr. green, Type I,
tied by rare combination of D.D.S.G. / ODESSA oval handstamp (Tchilinghirian fig. 834) and oval
PROPELLER GIURGEVO/16 Ship's handstamp (fig. 312), both struck in blue. Reverse of
entire with "Galati" thimble cds (Jan 1, 1872) of arrival and charged 10 kreuzer due in blue
crayon. Tchilinghirian (page 187) only records this Ship's handstamp on a loose 10 kr. red. A rare

5729 1867: 10 kr. green, Type I, used on large part of undated outer letter sheet to Braila and tied
by good strike of oval Ship's handstamp DEBRECZIN/39 in blue (Tchilinghirian fig. 290). Side flaps
missing but a very attractive cover, most probably mailed from Galatz as the "Debreczin"
served most of it's time as an Express mail steamer on the lower reaches of the Danube.
