Die Sammlung Emil Capellaro: Erste k.k. privilegierte

Donau-Dampfschiffahrts-Gesellschaft (D.D.S.G.)
Nachfolgend kommt der erste Teil der international bei der WIPA 2000 im
Court of Honour ausgestellten Sammlung „Erste k.k. privilegierte Donau-
Dampfschiffahrts-Gesellschaft (D.D.S.G.)“ von Emil Capellaro zur Ver-
steigerung.
Die Sammlung dokumentiert den von der D.D.S.G. eingerichteten Post-
dienst mit Dampfern auf der Donau zwischen Österreich-Ungarn und den
Donau-Hafenstädten in Rumänien, Serbien, Bosnien, Bulgarien, dem Ge-
biet der Dobrudscha und Russland. Es handelt sich wohl um die bislang
bedeutendste Kollektion dieses Gebietes und um eine einmalige Gelegen-
heit für die Sammler der unteren Donau-Staaten, die Spitzenstücke dieser
philatelistischen Gebiete für ihre Sammlungen zu erwerben.

Historischer Hintergrund

1829 gründeten die englischen Schiffsbauer John Andrews und Joseph

Pritchard die „Erste kaiserlich-königlich privilegierte Donau-Dampf-
schiffahrts-Gesellschaft“ (DDSG). Die Postbeförderung wurde im Jahre
1846 im Vertrag mit der österreichischen Postverwaltung auf Hafenorte
außerhalb der Monarchie be-
schränkt, um eine Konkurrenz
zu den Konsularpostämtern aus-
zuschließen. Dabei verpflichtete
sich die DDSG zur kostenlosen
Beförderung von Postsäcken der
österreichischen Post im Aus-
tausch mit den an der Donau ge-
legenen k.k. Konsularpostämtern
in der Levante. Gleichzeitig konn-
te die DDSG gegen Entgelt Post
zwischen den Donau-Hafenstäd-
ten ohne k.k Konsularpostämter
bis zur Österreichisch-Ungari-
schen Staatsgrenze befördern.

Die Bedeutung der Donau als Verkehrsweg

Die Donau war im 19.Jahrhundert der wichtigste Verkehrs- und Postweg zwischen der Österreich-Ungarischen Monarchie
mit Serbien, Rumänien, den Gebieten des Osmanischen Reiches (später u.a. Bulgarien) und Russland am Schwarzen Meer.
Die politische Situation in den Gebieten entlang der Donau war in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts instabil. Ungarn
löste sich 1866/67 von Österreich, Rumänien gründete sich 1862 durch die Vereinigung der Fürstentümern Moldau und Wa-
lachei. Südlich der Donau bis zur Mündung in das Schwarze Meer lagen die Gebiete des politisch schwachen Osmanischen
Reiches, aus denen nach dem Türkisch-Russischen Krieg 1878 Bulgarien hervor ging und die Dobrudscha an Rumänien
angeschlossen wurde. Serbien hatte sich bereits 1866 aus der türkischen Herrschaft lösen können.

Die Ausgabe von Briefmarken

Zunächst wurden Briefe von DDSG Agenten auf privater Basis

entlang der Donau angenommen. Die dabei eingenommenen Be-
förderungsgebühren verblieben bei den Agenten und Dampfschiff-
Besatzungen. Doch das zunehmende Passagier-, Fracht- und Post-
aufkommen zwischen den unteren Donaugebieten vom Schwarzen
Meer bis zur Österreichisch-Ungarischen Grenze im Norden führte
im April 1866 zu der Entscheidung der DDSG-Verwaltung, die Post-
beförderung in eigener Regie zu übernehmen und eigene DDSG-
Briefmarken auszugeben. Ab diesem Zeitpunkt konnten nur noch im
Voraus frankierte Briefe befördert werden. Briefe über das Donau-
Postgebiet der DDSG hinaus erforderten zusätzliches Porto, das als
Nachgebühr beim Empfänger erhoben wurde. Es war aber auch mög-
lich, die Briefe mit Postwertzeichen der übernehmenden ‚fremden’
Postverwaltung im Voraus zu frankieren. Derartige Kombinations-
frankaturen sind extrem selten und gehören heute zu den größten
Raritäten.

Die Sammlung Emil Capellaro dokumentiert in wahr-

scheinlich niemals zuvor erreichter Vollständigkeit die
verschiedenen Schiffsstempel der DDSG Dampfer, der
verschiedenen DDSG Postagentien in den Staaten ent-
lang der Donau sowie die verschiedenen sonstigen im
Einsatz befindlichen Stempel.

/ GALATZ / P.P. in brown ink (Tchilinghirian fig.808 - "rare").  Tchilinghirian & Stephen mentions
that this handstamp was probably originally manufactured in Constantinople, there being
D.D.S.G. markings of this type for just four towns:  Constantinople, Galatz, Ibraila and

letter with a couple of negligible folds away from the adhesive, a great rarity in very fine
Exhibition quality. Illustrated in Tchilinghirian on page 178.

"amongst the scarcest of the DDSG ship markings..." and does not record a usage on this

5674 1870 (April 30): Entire letter from Galatz to Braila franked by 1867 10 kr. green, Type I, tied
by unusual usage of two different numbered strikes of the scarce boxed and dated 12 / V - 4-
Reise 22 Ship's Journey marking and datestamp in blue and 12 / V - 2- Reise 22 struck over
the top of the previous datestamp (Tchilinghirian fig. 323, 327). It is interesting to note that Steindler
(lot 204) had another example of the "4" cancellation on cover, used on the same day. Stamp
applied slightly over edge of entire but otherwise a delightful and very rare usage.

Dampschifsffahrt Gesellscaft" paper, mailed from Giurgevo to Vienna with superb strike
of oval blue *D.D.S.G./ AGENTIE / GIURGEVO* handstamp struck in blue (Tchilinghirian fig.
792). Over-struck by Vienna arrival datestamp in black (May 6), with manuscript "8" in red
crayon and corresponding framed "BFTAX..3 kr. / ZuTax..5 kr. = 8 kr." handstamp in black
for Postage Due calculation. A rare and fine entire of great postal history interest, the Agency
marking used two years earlier than recorded by Tchilinghirian.

extraordinary combination usage of July 1866 10 kr. lilac and 1867 10 kr. green, Type I, tied
both in manuscript and by oval AGENTIE GIURGEVO / SALDIRT / 9. AUG datestamp
(Tchilinghirian fig. 795) in blue. Both stamps have been 'doodled' on, probably by the Postal
employee with the '10' enhanced on the 10 kr. lilac and Anchor added, the 10 kr. green
with '9' of date. Reverse with oval GALAZ 10/8 arrival datestamp (Tchilinghirian fig. 810) in blue.

5729 1867: 10 kr. green, Type I, used on large part of undated outer letter sheet to Braila and tied
by good strike of oval Ship's handstamp DEBRECZIN/39 in blue (Tchilinghirian fig. 290). Side flaps
missing but a very attractive cover, most probably mailed from Galatz as the "Debreczin"
served most of it's time as an Express mail steamer on the lower reaches of the Danube.
