ThoughIcansaylittleabouttheinscriptionitself,theimageisremarkableinseveral
ways.First,theimageofthefourwheeledwagonisverycarefullydone(ifshrunken
inscaleforthenarrative)anditstypeiswellattestedinartandinarchaeology.Inart,
theLangreswagonorthewineskintransportfromaPompeiifrescocometomind,
whilethewagonsfromvillaAriannaatStabia(Miniero1987,199192)arethebest
archaeologicalparallel.
Iamalsostruckbytheapparentmalicethedonkeys/mulesseemtohaveforthepig
astheytramplehiminhisfirstappearance.Next,wemustimaginethesamepigis
underthewheelsandthen,remarkably(andcomically?),loadedonthewagonasa
curedham!Theinscriptionseemstodescribehimineachposition:onfootinthe
road,underthewheel,andfinally(perhaps?)asagift.

beingdrawnbyfouranimalsabreastinconvenientandinefficientandsecondlythey
seemtobehorses,butpresumablytheymustbemules.

seaminthestone.Thatseamwould'vemadeisnighimpossibletochasethroughhad

Thenitlooksasifthetextiscompressedontheright.Ofcoursethatcouldwellbethe

MyfavoritepigispartofthesuovetauriliareliefattheLouvre,whichIfinallysaw
duringtheParisversionoftheAugustusexhibit.Favoritebecausethepigistugging
