STUDENT PROFILE

Jacquaniese Washington
Sophomore
Convergence Journalism Major
Jacquaniese (Jaye) Washington, is not your normal 19-year old. This Alabama native is an ambitious sophomore with a 4.0 and
has found a way to maintain that Presidents List standing while being engaged in departmental and campus activities. Jayes
resume reads like one of a long-time professional in the business. As a Convergence Journalism major Jaye takes pride in
making her mark. She is the station manager for the on-campus radio station WDSU The Hive and a writer for the Hornet
Newspaper and the Mass Communications Message. Jaye has also been a Mass Communications intern for NASA and enjoys
involvement outside of the Mass Communications Department, including being one of the captains of the flag team Sweet
16 and a former Teach for America mentor.
The job as Station Manager for WDSU The Hive is a demanding one but shes been working hard for the radio station since
freshman year. She started as a member of the news team and from that point on her perfectionist spirit helped to take her to
the next level. Her job involves making sure the station runs as smooth as possible and serving as the liaison between the
stations advisor Mrs. Ava Perrine and student workers. This is one of the toughest jobs Ive ever had thus far because not
only is it a lot of responsibility but I am faced with the challenge of having to be a friend as well as a boss, but this has helped
to build my leaderships skills, says Jacquaniese.
What keeps this girl on-track? In her interview, she shared that she faced a number of
challenges growing up, like dealing with problems with her mother and being taken in
by another family but she used it as motivation. Despite the challenges, she graduated
from high school with a 4.2 GPA. Sometimes it not about who has your backyouve
got to have your own back, says Jaye. Ive got to have my front, my back, my side,
under me, above me, Ive got to have all of me She wants to be the first person in her
family to earn a college degree and an actual career that she can be proud of and she
desires to someday be the mother she never had.

When asked what advice she would give to her peers Jacquaniese simply said this
Find what motivates you. Identify the lowest point in life where you truly wanted to
give up and felt that life wasnt worth it and use that to push you because nobody can
push you harder than yourself.

Lonjae Williams
Junior
Public Relations & Advertising Major
Passionate about public relations. That statement is representative of Lonjae Williams, the current
president of the DSU chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America or PRSSA. Lonjae
joined PRSSA after meeting former president Donnice Peterson who told her about the organization.
Lonjae started going to meetings and soon became Donnices right hand girl. She stepped up to the
plate and served as vice president for one year.
This organization gives students an opportunity to get real public relations experience before they
graduate, says Lonjae. PRSSA has come a long way at DSU. In 2012, the team started competing in
the Bateman Case Study Competition and won honorable mention. We are competing again this
year, Lonjae shares. We are working on a campaign called Home Matters to raise awareness about
affordable housing and even got to meet with Council member Penrose Hollins, one of Delawares top
politicians that advocates for housing in the state. Were hoping to be in the top three this year.
Lonjae also does a lot on campus to help provide opportunities for PR
students. This year she has put together internship panels featuring
mass communications students who have had an internship. The
purpose is to let experienced students share their experiences with
PR students getting ready to start interning. PRSSA also provides free
PR services to campus organizations.
Lonjae says that joining PRSSA gives PR students access to networking
opportunitie that you would not be exposed to if you werent involved
with PRSSA. Lonjae says One thing that I really love about PRSSA is
that you learn a lot from your peers and they can teach you new
things that you didnt know before.

STUDENT PROFILE
Joshua Potter
Senior
Public Relations & Advertising Major
It isnt every day I get to sit down and speak with a student that is as experienced as Josh Potter. Josh
Potter, who now attends Delaware State University, already holds an associate degree in Advertising
Design. For two years Josh has been an intern for a company called SPG International, LLC. It is a
storage solution company, for restaurants, hotels and industrial applications, Says Josh. His job is to
create spec sheets for the products SPG International, LLC carries. He creates catalogs of their
products for Starbucks and other Fortune 500 Companies. I also offer marketing support for internal
design requests, Josh added. That includes making brochures, promo flyers and news releases, which
is just a short list.
During his last project he created a product catalog of SPG to send to the McDonalds corporation.
Although it was a group project, he served as the project coordinator and design analyst. I
showcased our unique storage solutions and shelving options and used products specifically made for
McDonalds applications, said Josh.
Hard work is nothing new to Josh. His father works as the Vice President of engineering at the
company and was actually the one that persuaded him to apply for a position in their marketing
department. After he received his degree he began applying everywhere and after much waiting, this
opportunity opened up. My proudest work is the catalog I designed for Starbucks, he mentioned
but I also enjoy working here on campus. Joshua is also the Advertising Manager for the Hornet
Newspaper, layout and design editor for the Mass Communications Message, and hes in charge of the
creative design for the 2014-15 PRSSA Bateman Case Study Team.
He ended by adding Just network and get your name out there. Im going to be graduating soon and I
already have several job offers and options ahead of me.
Joshua is looking forward to career advancement at SPG and is open to taking advantage of other
opportunities.

Portlan Davis
Senior
TV, Radio, Film Major
You could pay for the piece of paper, but the knowledge is out there for free if you go and get it, says Portlan
Davis, a TV, Radio, Film Major at Delaware State University. Over the last four years Davis has been committed to
fine-tuning his craft by taking advantage of every opportunity presented to him. Davis is the President of WDSU
Radio station, the TV station manager, main station camera operator, and the main station editor.
As a child, Davis watched Star Wars with his father and became influenced by director George Lucas and from
there his passion for film and production grew. This aspiring director, filmmaker, and editor is originally from
Atlantic City, New Jersey but was raised in Dover, Delaware. Davis came to DSU with the intent of majoring in
business, however his grades werent what he wanted them to be. As a result, he left school and joined the
Marines for four years. During that time, Davis became more focused. When asked what made him come back
to school, he says Now Im actually going for my dreams. And what are Portlans dreams? He wants to make
full-length science fiction feature films. Hes well on his way to making those dreams come true.
One of his major influences on the campus of Delaware State University is Mr. Vince Chelli who is the Technology
Director for the Mass Communications Department. Davis says what he has been able to learn from Mr. Chelli is
immeasurable. Mr. Chelli has taught me seventy percent of my craft and Ive learned the other twenty five
percent in the classroom.

Working at the campus TV station is definitely preparing Portlan for

the future. Although there are some issues on the set [when taping
shows] like crew members being tardy, interviewees being late or
having to reschedule, audio or technical problems, we still manage
to get the job done. Portlan takes pride in the fact that hes a
consummate professional. Working on campus projects, with friends,
coming up with his own ideas, and putting them together allows
Portlan to test his creativity and brings excitement to Davis.
Portland Davis is definitely an Oscar winner in the making.
