PREFACE

This INTERIM Defence Standard relates to solvent for grease for Ministry of Defence use.

This INTERIM Defence Standard has been produced by the Defence Research Agency/
Quality Assurance Technical Support.

This Defence Standard is being issued as an INTERIM Standard and is provisional in order
to obtain information and experience of its application. This will then permit the submission of
observations and comments from users on Form 0825 enclosed.

This INTERIM Standard has been agreed by the authorities concerned with its use and shall
be incorporated whenever relevant in all future designs, contracts, orders etc and whenever
practicable by amendment to those already in existence. If any difficulty arises which prevents
application of the INTERIM Defence Standard, the Directorate of Standardization shall be informed
so that a remedy may be sought.

SOLVENT FOR GREASE, EMULSIFIABLE

Scope

This INTERIM Defence Standard specifies requirements for a solvent which is suitable for dissolving
greasy contaminants from metal surfaces, and which may be washed off with water.

This INTERIM Standard calls for the use of substances and/or procedures that may be injurious to
health if adequate precautions are not taken. It refers only to technical suitability and in no way
absolves either the designer, the producer, the supplier or the user from statutory and all other legal
obligations relating to health and safety at any stage of manufacture or use.

Description

The material shall be a mobile liquid free from foreign matter and visible impurities.

Composition

The material shall be a blend of kerosene, cresylic acid and soap solution in approximately the
following proportions by mass shown:

Test Requirements

All samples of the product taken from any portion of the supply shall be in accordance with clauses
4 and 5 and, when tested by the methods specified, shall comply with the requirements of
table A.

Methods of Test

All enquiries concerning methods of test or other technical matters should be referred to the

Containers

8.1
Unless the form of packaging is specified in the contract or order, the material shall be
supplied in sound, clean and dry containers suitable for the product. The use of contaminated
containers shall render the whole consignment liable to rejection. After filling, each container shall
be securely closed.

Each container shall be legibly and durably marked in accordance with legal requirements

ANNEX A

Determination of pH
A.1

Apparatus

A pH meter with a glass electrode and calomel reference cell


A.2

Reagent

Water complying with BS 3978, grade 3

Procedure

Mix 20 cm3 of the sample with 180 cm3 of water, mix thoroughly and determine the pH of the
emulsion formed at 20C using the previously calibrated pH meter.

Report the pH to 0.1 pH unit

Determination of Emulsifying Properties

B.1

Apparatus

Glass Measuring cyIinder 100 cm3, complying with BS 604


B.2

Reagents

OM-270 complying with D Eng RD 2472 B/O


Water complying with BS 3978, grade 3

Procedure

Transfer 5 cm3 of the OM-270 to the 100 cm3 stoppered cylinder, add 10 cm3 of the sample and
mix thoroughly. Add 50 cm3 of water and shake the cylinder vigorously for 15 seconds. Allow
the emulsion so formed to stand undisturbed for 15 minutes.

Reporting

Note whether any oil separates.


Differentiation of the emulsion into two or more layers will not be regarded as failure in this test.

The above Defence Standard has been published as an INTERIM Standard and is provisional
because it has not been agreed by all authorities concerned with its use. It shall be applied to
obtain information and experience on its application which will then permit the submission of
observations and comments from users.
The purpose of this form therefore is to solicit any beneficial and constructive comment that will
assist the author and/or committee to review the INTERIM Standard prior to it being converted to
a normal Standard.
