Battle of the Books

While budgets and curriculum are

key issues a local school board campaign, the three candidates for two
open seats on the Menomonee Falls
School Board were asked about district
successes March 17.
The three candidates incumbent
David Noshay and challengers Nilda
Cordova and Laura Olteanu were
asked to name three district successes
over the past year. A fourth candidate,
Lowell Kellogg, was unable to attend the
forum due to a scheduling conflict.
Olteanu cited the continuous
improvement process implemented by
the district as one success.
I know the teachers have been
implementing some of these strategies in
their classroom and I think that collaboration is a success teachers being able
to use that for students, students getting
back to the teachers, getting that information from the teachers to the parents,
I think thats very important, Olteanu

Falls board amends fire services agreement with Lannon

The Menomonee Falls Village Board
approved an amendment to the fire services agreement with the village of Lannon to
include other pieces of equipment from
Lannon as part of the agreement.
The communities approved an agreement in 2014 under which Menomonee

Falls took over the fire service operations

for the village of Lannon as of 2015. The
agreement included equipment from
Lannon that would be transferred to
Menomonee Falls. Under the amendment,
a 1996 Spartan Pumper with a Marion
body valued at $132,000 is removed and

Letter to the Editor

Raymonds summarizes background
Dear Editor,
My name is Steve Raymonds and I am
running for Village President, and currently
serve as Village Trustee in Menomonee
Falls. I am married to Beth Harwood and
we have four adult children and two grandchildren.
I have been actively involved in community service since moving to the Falls 37
years ago with the following organizations:
Menomonee
Falls
Kiwanis
Club,
Menomonee Falls Chamber of Commerce,
Menomonee Falls Little League, Tri-County
YMCA, Menomonee Falls School District,
plus St. Anthony and Good Shepherd
Parishes.
I have been a Village Trustee since
2009 and have served on the Plan
Commission,
General
Government
Committee and the CDA. I pride myself in
keeping taxes in check and in timely
responding to residents phone calls and
emails regarding proposals brought forward that may directly affect them.

I am currently legal counsel for Heuler

Tile, where I handle issues related to contracts, real estate, human resources, insurance, benefits, finance, accounting and
unions. I also serve as the administrator of
the
Milwaukee
Tile
Contractors
Association.
I believe my legal education and
expertise, my business knowledge, my community involvement and Village Board
experience provide me with the qualifications to effectively serve as the Village
President, and I am asking for your vote.
On Tuesday, April 7, the voters in
Menomonee Falls have an opportunity to
exercise their right to vote. Typically the
turnout is small for the Spring election
which falls during the public school Spring
break. I encourage all of the residents 18
years of age and older to register and vote
either by absentee ballot the week before
the election, or to cast their vote in person
on April 7.
Steve Raymonds,
Candidate for Village President

will be replaced with a heavy rescue vehicle which has a value of $141,900.
Several other items, including portable
radio, a chain saw and EMS supplies, are
also included in the amendment.
Construction is ongoing with a fire station at the southwest corner of Main Street
and Menomonee Avenue that will serve
Lannon and the northwest portion of
Menomonee Falls.
Ordinance amended
The board amended an ordinance prohibiting the theft of gas or motor fuel from
a retailer to create a liability for the owner
of the vehicle involved. Under the change,
the owner of the vehicle will not be liable
if he or she can prove that the vehicle was
stolen, it's a leased vehicle or if someone

else was driving the vehicle.

Etc.
The board approved issuing $1.28
million in taxable general obligation promissory notes for the tax incremental finance
(TIF) district 12, which is located on both
sides of Lilly Road just north of Silver
Spring Drive. The interest rate is 2.05 percent for five years.
The board approved issuing $4.2 million in general obligation promissory
notes for TIF 8, which covers an area west
of Pilgrim Road and south of Hwy. 41/45.
The interest rate is 3.078 percent.
The board approved issuing $7.85 million in general oblation promissory notes
for TIF 8. These notes are nontaxable. The
interest rate is 2.82 percent.

said.
Olteanu said that financially, the district has been able to assess its priorities in
light of budget constraints. She also said
communication has been a strength.
Noshay cited the continuous improvement process and said the last few years
here have been a lot of fun. You can just
see the excitement all the way down to the
teachers and the students are talking the
same language, Noshay said.
He also cited the academies the district has created for STEM (science, tech-

nology, engineering and math), healthcare and business as wonderful opportunities for students.
The teamwork across departments to
literally re-write virtually every stitch of curriculum to be career-aligned is phenomenal, Noshay.
Cordova cited increased test scores for
reading and math within the district as a
positive. Also, the use of PBIS (Positive
Behavior Intervention System) to reduce
behavior problems in the classroom is
huge and allows teachers to teach students, Cordova said.

Bantam 2A State Championship on
Sunday, April 15, 2015, in the state tournament held in Tomah. After qualifying
as the Region 5 representative, the road
to the title included beating Janesville 7-3
on Saturday in their first game and a 6-0
win against Fox Valley in their second
game on Saturday to qualify moving on
to the championship game on Sunday.

With only 10 players from Sussex,

Brookfield, Wauwatosa, Cudahy and
Menomonee Falls on the team, winning
the title was expected to be a challenge.
The quest became a bit harder when forward William Sweeney broke his arm
during the first game. However, the team
pulled together and with the rally cry of
Lets win this for Will!, the team dug
deep and produced a tough fought 7-2
victory over Eagle River on Sunday.

Tip of the Week: Keep Easter lilies and candy bunnies in checkchocolate goodies are toxic to cats, dogs and ferrets,
and lilies can be fatal if ingested by our furry friends. And be mindful, kitties love to nibble on colorful plastic grass, which
can lead to an obstructed digestive tract, severe vomiting and dehydration.

The Menomonee Falls Water Utility will be cleaning and flushing water mains from
7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. beginning March 30th and continuing through April 24th.
The flushing will remove most of the natural minerals that have settled in the mains
such as iron, a harmless-reddish brown mineral that discolors the water.
If you observe the Water Utility personnel working in your area, refrain from using
water or use as little as possible for one-half to three-quarters of an hour to insure
that the water has settled in the mains. This will also help prevent any iron from
being drawn into your water piping system.
If you do find that your water has become discolored, refrain from using it for an
additional one-half to three-quarters of an hour. Then draw off the remaining discolored water through the COLD WATER FAUCET ONLY.
Your cooperation during this flushing procedure will benefit all water customers.

CERTIFIED WOMAN
OWNED BUSINESS

Gail Tradewell of Industrial

Recyclers is proud to announce that
they have received national certification as a Womens Business
Enterprise by the WBENC
(Womans Business Enterprise
National Council).
The WBENCs National
Standard of Certification is a meticulous process, including an in-depth
review of the business and site
inspection. The WBENC is the
nations third party certifier of businesses owned and operated by
women in the United States.
WBENC is a resource for more
than 700 US companies and government agencies that rely on WBENCs certification as an integral part
of their supplier diversity programs.
The certification process is designed to confirm the business is at least
51 percent owned, operated and controlled by a woman. Since 2010,
after the passing of her brother Wayne Baumgartner, the founder of
Industrial Recyclers, Gail Tradewell has taken full ownership and
operation of the company. It was not easy taking the leadership position in such a male-dominated industry, but since then the company has
grown to over 20 full time employees, says Tradewell.
For over 25 years, Industrial Recyclers has been a family owned
and operated business. They have been helping both individuals and
large corporations realize the true economic value from the recycling
process. Whether you are recycling a worn out household appliance or
a piece of heavy industrial machinery, they can help you every step of
the way. The recycling center is open to the public five days a week to
provide you with the best possible service. They recycle all types of
metal copper, brass, aluminum cans, siding, stainless steel, car/truck
batteries, vehicles, lawn tractors, cast iron bath tubs, sinks, etc.
In addition to recycling materials they also provide dumpster service to customers. Whether building, remodeling, roofing, cleaning out
or demolishing a house, etc. they can provide their customers a variety
of dumpster styles and sizes for any of your needs. For additional
information, please visit them at www.indrecyclers.com.
Industrial Recyclers is located at 9400 N. 124th St. Milwaukee, just
south of County Line Rd. & north of Brown Deer Rd. on 124th St.
(Wausaukee Rd).

Open burning banned

in Falls, Germantown
Public safety officials in Menomonee
Falls and Germantown have issued temporary open burning bans in response to dry
conditions.
Menomonee Falls announced its ban
on March 16 while Germantown followed
a day later.
In separate statements, both communities said their bans are a result of factors
that create "fire weather." There is currently soil, leaf litter and brush that are drying

rapidly from winter's low snowfall and

shallow frost along with dry conditions,
strong gusty winds and low humidity.
The open burn ban came after the
state Department of Natural Resources
(DNR) suspended burning permits in 22
counties statewide March 16 due what the
agency said is "expected to be
Wisconsin's first widespread risk of high to
very high fire danger."

POLICE BLOTTER
The following report was taken
from records at the Menomonee
Falls Police Department.

A female subject stopped for shoplifting at Woodmans Food Market, W124

bathroom pillows and two 50-gallon bags
of womens clothing from his residence
while he was on vacation Feb. 19-25.
Stereo equipment was removed from
a vehicle in the 7000 block of Country
Lane during the overnight hours of March
10 and 11.
A resident from the 17000 block of
Menomonee Avenue reported that 25
tablets of hydrocodone were stolen from
the home during the overnight hours of
March 7 and 8.

block of Main Street.

stopped for speeding and swerving at

Warrants

taken into custody on a Hartford warrant at
11:30 p.m. March 4 following a traffic stop
at County Line and Pilgrim roads.
A 24-year-old Milwaukee woman
was taken into custody on a Mukwonago
warrant at 7:07 p.m. March 12 following a
traffic stop at Leon Road and Highway
145.
A 39-year-old Waukesha man was
taken into custody on a Germantown warrant at 7:39 p.m. March 15 following a traffic stop at Highway 41 and Main Street.

Warhawks turn back Papermakers to qualify for state

BY TROY SPARKS
CORRESPONDENT
Germantown took the punishment from
Kimberly and gave it back. They survived a
grinding game with scoring by committee
and matching the physicality to beat the
Papermakers, 54-47, in the Division 1 sectional final in Manitowoc to punch their ticket to Madison and the WIAA Boys State
Tournament for the fourth straight year.
The Warhawks will put their 26-0
record on the line against Madison East
(20-6), March 20, at 8:15 p.m., at the Kohl
Center, in the state semifinal game. They
will try to make history in their quest to win
their fourth title in a row.
Its really is just unbelievable, senior
guard Brian Studer said. I couldnt even
dream of this before, so its incredible.
Added junior guard Juwan McCloud.
Thats an honor, he said. Especially to
go (after) four in a row. I dont know how
many teams have done that but I know
thats a special thing to do.
Germantown knew what they would be
in for against Kimberly because the two
teams played each other last year with a
trip to state on the line and the Warhawks
were prepared for a team with football
players on their roster.
Coach (Steve Showalter) said they
were a bunch of (big guys), senior forward
Dwayne Lawhorn Jr. said. They are a
bunch of football players. They work hard.
They had that winning mentality because
they won a state championship in football.
We just outmuscled them this game.
Germantown was out of sync early in
the game as some turnovers and soft

defense allowed Kimberly to take a 10-5

lead in the first quarter. The Warhawks
went on an 8-0 run to take a 13-10 advantage. A three-point basket by Kimberly senior guard Colin Tessner tied the score at 13
entering the second quarter.
Senior forward Kyle Theis scored the
first four points of the second quarter by
making one of his two free throws at the 6
minute 7 second mark in the quarter and
converting on a 3-point play 30 seconds
later to break the tie and give Germantown
a 17-13 lead and they never trailed again.
He had six points in the quarter. The
Warhawks largest lead in the half was
eight at 25-17. They led 27-22 at the
halfway mark.
Germantown held a five point lead late
in the third quarter until a three by Kimberly
senior guard Ben Boots cut the lead to 3432. Baskets by Studer and McCloud ended
a 4-0 run by the Warhawks to take a sixpoint lead into the final period.
A 5-0 run by Kimberly to start the fourth
quarter pulled them to within one at 38-37.
A jumper and a three-pointer by junior forward Max Keefe boosted the Germantown
lead to 43-37. The biggest play on offense
came from Lawhorn, who was fouled after
making a three and the free throw for a 4point play to put the Warhawks back up
seven at 47-40 with 3:41 left.
They gave me some space, Lawhorn
said. I let it go. They fouled me and luckily
(the three-pointer) went in.
Kimberly got no closer than four points
down the stretch. For Germantown, it was
about doing whatever it took to make their
sixth trip overall to the state tournament.
Its tough to get up every day and try

team in the state for the

5-7
years,
Germantown
coach
Steve Showalter said.
The team that we beat
are solid and tough and
so good. Our defense
has really stepped up the
last couple of games. We
dont have the flashy
offensive game that we
used to have, but we figure out a way to do some
good things.
Germantown couldnt play their up-tempo
game against Kimberly,
but they did enough to
get by. We know that
we had to be patient and
play
inside-out,
McCloud said. We got

picked up the slack. After I made (the first Lawhorn added 13 and Theis finished with
shot), it felt pretty good, he said. The 10. Boots led Kimberly with a game-high
whole game, I was kind of struggling with 22 points. The Papermakers finished their

Girls state basketball tournament

KML stopped by Whitewater

in state semifinal
The Kettle Moraine Lutheran girls basketball team fell behind early to Whitewater in
state Division 3 semifinal March 13 and
could never catch up, as the Whippets
topped the Chargers 47-30.
"They certainly were the better team
today. They jumped on us early in the first
quarter," Kettle Moraine Lutheran Coach
Jason Walz said afterward.
Whitewater jumped out to a 5-0 lead
before Lyndsey Soderbeck put Kettle
Moraine Lutheran on the board with a layup
at the 4:03 mark of the first quarter. The
Whippets then outscored Kettle Moraine
Lutheran 9-2 to take a 14-4 lead after the first
quarter. Walz said Whitewater was able to
score several points off transition in the first
quarter while his team did a better job of getting back on defense in the second and third
quarters.
Whitewater extended their lead to 14
points before baskets by Soderbeck and
Mikayla Voigt reduced the Whitewater lead
to 22-11 by halftime.
Kelsey Reynolds and Sarah Schumacher
scored the first two baskets for Whitewater to
start the third quarter as the Whippets added
on to their lead. Whitewater held a 45-25
lead with 2:20 remaining before Kettle
Moraine Lutheran cut into the margin before
time expired.
Walz said the key statistics for his team
were the 24 turnovers and four assists.
"Obviously, you're not going to win
games with that stat," Walz said. Walz said
Whitewater is long and was able to cover
space well. The Chargers also converted
only 13 of 50 field goal attempts (26 percent) which Walz said may have been due
to the length of Whitewater's zone defense.
The loss ended Kettle Moraine Lutheran's
attempt to repeat as Division 3 champions.
Afterward, Voigt looked back on the season.

3 semifinal March 13. Photo by
Thomas J. McKillen.
"Even though we didn't win today, we
still have great memories of the season and I
wouldn't trade my teammates for the world. I
love my teammates and they're so supportive. I'm never going to forget this season,"
Voigt said.
Whitewater finished an undefeated season the next day with a 49-43 win over
Appleton Xavier in the Division 3 final.
