Sample Quarter 2 Biology Progress Report

During the second quarter in biology class, students studied the

structure of the water molecule, the properties of water, macromolecules
and nutrition, the size and scale of cells, and the structure and function of
cell organelles. During laboratory activities, students continued to follow the
scientific method to generate hypotheses, follow procedures, collect data,
analyze results, and formulate conclusions about relevant biological
concepts. During the third and fourth quarters, students will be challenged
to write formal lab reports with decreasing structure and support, and will
continue to self-assess their work using a teacher-generated rubric. In
addition to lab reports, students also focused on improving their study skills
this quarter in order to increase their comprehension of unfamiliar biology
content. Students have implemented the SQ3R reading strategy to record
notes from the biology textbook, summarized current event articles, and
used a variety of multisensory strategies to review and practice abstract
biology concepts. For example, students created a cell organelle dance,
where the function of each cell organelle was represented by kinesthetic
movement. Students also created an edible cell cake, which included
different foods that each represented a different cell organelle. Lastly,
students created PowerPoint presentations to depict the structure and
function of cell organelles, which included pictures, text, and videos.
Additionally, in order to best prepare for the cumulative midterm biology
exam, students used their notes to generate a comprehensive study guide,
and to create original, relevant practice questions. The class will begin the
third quarter by learning about cell transport, cell reproduction, genetics, and
photosynthesis and respiration.
Ryan continues to work diligently to improve his understanding of
biological concepts, both during class instruction and when working on
assignments independently. Ryan consistently arrives to class on time and is
prepared with all of his necessary materials. He is often attentive and eager
to participate actively, but occasionally he requires direct cues and leading
questions in order to comprehend abstract material. During laboratory
activities, Ryan cooperates well with his peers and works more effectively
when expectations have been clearly outlined. While he often works
productively on group assignments, he occasionally requires prompts and
cueing to stay on task. Outside of class, Ryan completes homework
assignments thoroughly, on time, and to the best of his ability. He
implements active study skills, and consistently communicates to the
teacher when he has difficulty understanding abstract biology content or

expectations on an assignment.
Additionally, Ryan can maintain an organized notebook with minimal
prompting from the teacher, and he independently refers to his notebook as
a resource to study for tests and quizzes. On assessments, Ryan continues to
perform in a manner that reflects satisfactory comprehension of concepts
and vocabulary. He earned a 91% on the midterm exam! After each
assessment, he completes an evaluation to determine why he earned the
particular score. Then, with minimal teacher prompting, he makes the
appropriate corrections and develops a specific goal to to work towards on
future assessments. Lastly, in preparation for the midterm exam, Ryan
completed an oral presentation this quarter in which he expressed his
understanding of specific concepts and vocabulary that were included on the
exam. Ryans slideshow was accurate, proofread, colorful, and engaging and
he spoke with clarity and confidence during the presentation. Overall, Ryan is
a diligent and considerate student who shows a desire to learn new concepts
and skills in biology class.
