Pumping Principals

Progressive Cavity Pump

Rotor turning within the Stator

Cavities

Cavitiy always retains the same shape and

volume

Flow is a proportional relationship to speed/RPM

Constant, Pulsation-free flow because of

overlapping fluid chambers

The unique design of a progressive cavity pumps offers users several

advantages over other positive displacement pumps. This is due to the
simple principle of the pumping element which employs a metal rotor and
a rubber stator.

How it works!

Just imagine a piston.

Imagine multiple pistons behind each other.

Now well make the wall thickness zero.

And change the piston slightly.
Youve created the endless piston PC pump!

Flow control vs. Diaphragm Metering Pumps

Virtually no pulsations

You do not have to use pulsation dampeners with progressive cavity pumps.
You do not have to dampen flow meters to sample over time.
Because of the very low pulsations in a flow meters can read in real time.

What type of PD flow do

you want entering your
flow meter?

Flow control vs. Diaphragm Metering Pumps

Operating Principle

Continuous flow makes PCs ideal for

multiple component blending.

Blending

Polymer Systems

No pulsations to head box when pumping retention aids!!!!

Flow control vs. Diaphragm Metering Pumps

No ball checks means no back pressure valves!

No back pressure valves required!

PC pumps are better for higher viscosities where ball checks usually gum up and clog.
NO vapor locking on products that gas (bleach).

Operational Costs

A progressive cavity pump control loop is simple!

Pump, VFD, Flow meter
VFDs take the place of pneumatic controllers.

Pump speed controls the flow.

Response time is immediate!

Hysteresis is dramatically reduced..virtually eliminated!

And remember that flat line from the flow chart indicates that you are getting more precise
dosing and mixing, resulting in better quality control.

Shown: a multiple component, continuous and in-line blending skid.

This may lead you to consider other options like eliminating batch mixing in blend tanks
and going with more cost effective continuous, on-line blending.

Multiple component inline blending is a popular application for PC pumps because

multiple components can be precisely metered continuously, without slip, and without
pulsations.

Other Key Benefits to PC pumps

has low shear characteristics/requires gentle handling
solids are not an issue
accurate metering with minimum pulsation
wide temperature range (especially with even wall stators)
materials for abrasive or corrosive fluids

Benefits of compression vs. clearance

slip becomes less of an issue

changing viscosities are not an issue: from easily flow able to highly viscous/paste like
not affected by changing pressures!
the compression enables the pump to act like a valve. When its stopped, nothing will flow
through it. When its running, displacement can be controlled by RPM.
self priming is another unique feature. Some centrifugal can lose prime between
batches, or from alternating pumps.

Valveless Flow Control Vertical Mount

The compression between the rotor and stator enables customers to mount the pumps vertically.

Saves valuable floor space at your facility.

Valveless Flow Control Vertical Mount - Solids

Non suspended solids in slurries wont settle in the pump casing and cause wear issues when pumps are mounted vertically. The pump works with
gravity by allowing settled solids to drop into the cavity.

Flow Control Costs

Capital - Compare the cost of a PC/VFD to the

cost of a centrifugal/control-valve.
Maintenance - Compare the maintenance to that
of a centrifugal/control valve.
Operating PCs are ideal for GPM:PSI ratios of 1
or less. Also consider the idea of eliminating
compressed air on control valves.
