Candelaria: Model of Love for the Poor

N. Lagdameo explained the role of the
Blessed Virgin in the recent Year of the Poor
celebration of the Jaro Fiesta on February
2.

For the poor, with the poor

Marys special love for the poor holds
a special meaning in this Year of the Poor,
as we usher in the Feast of the Presentation
of the Lord, explained the prelate who
stressed the context of the nine-year
spiritual journey set by the Catholic Bishops
Conference of the Philippines (CBCP).
To emphasize the Archdioceses
pastoral priority this year, Lagdameo said:

For the Jaro Fiesta, we have chosen Our

Lady of Candles as model of love for the
poor. The family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph
in Egypt and in Nazareth was known to
be an example of charity and compassion
toward their immediate neighborhood and
community.
The Church has always been poor from
the beginning and throughout history It is
in order to serve the poor, work for the poor,
be with the poor and deliver the poor from
inhuman, unjust and unworthy poverty, he
added.
Total consecration
The prelate also led the faithful in
consecrating the Archdiocese of Jaro to the
Blessed Virgin Mary that day.

the Presentation of the Lord forty days
after Christmas day. It was also known
as Candlemas or Candelaria since
the blessing and procession of candles is
included in the Feasts Liturgy.

sa mga ginadumilian sang kasugoan
amo yadtong mga binunyagan nga ara sa
ginasiling estado sang sala nga mortal,
kon sayuron, ang mga nakahibalo nga sila
nakahimo sang daku nga sala kag wala
ini nga sala mapatawad sa Sakramento
sang Pagkompesar. Para sa paghangop kag
paghibalo kon ano ang luyag silingon sang
daku nga sala, akon na ini ginpaathag sa
akon serye sang Katekesis nahanungod sa
Napulo ka mga Sugo sang Dios sa sini man
nga bahin sang Candle Light. Kon parte
naman sa Sakramento sang Pagkompesar,

Naggwa sila sa singagoga
kag nagkadto dayon sa balay ni
Simon kag ni Andres nga upod
si Santiago kag si Juan. 30Ang
ugangan nga babayi ni Simon
nagahigda nga may hilanat,
kag sang pag-abot gid ni Jesus
ginsugiran sia nahanungod
sa iya. 31Ginpalapitan sia ni
Jesus, gin-uyatan sa kamot

discussed the strengths and weaknesses

of their assigned committees. They
were instructed to make some
recommendations to be used for future
preparations of the Jaro Fiesta. The group
discussion took all of twenty minutes,
giving each committee member ample
time to discuss thoroughly his/her
experiences. After the discussion, dinner
was served.
The output of the discussion was
presented to the big group by each of the
cluster heads. Further recommendations
were suggested by all present in the
meeting. Fr. Nathaniel G. Gentizon

he next topic was about the Qualities

of Mary, expounded by Fr. Randy
Doromal. He started his topic by
asking how to build a house. Many ideas
were pitched in, like putting up the posts,
roof, wall, flooring, etc. which will result to
a house with a strong foundation and could
stand any calamity human or natural. After
building the house, the family is now ready
to live in it, the father, mother and children.
Inside the house, the mother takes care of
almost everything, especially the children.
It is always the mother who cares and most
concerned of inside the house. She is very
loving and ready to sacrifice for the sake of
her family.
Our Blessed Mother was all caring and
loving. She was very much concerned with
the child Jesus. Silently she followed Gods
commandments. She was also ready to help,
to render service to anyone, like when St.
Elizabeth got pregnant at her old age. She
took a long journey to reach her. To sum
up everything, we can see her commitment
manifested on how she brought up Jesus,
how she related with Joseph in their rearing
of the child Jesus. She did everything in all
obedience to the will of the Father.
Not only that, as a mother she was very
prayerful, and she also taught the child Jesus
how to pray. She was very committed in her
role as mother. Silently, she accepted all that
was in store for her, all the sufferings and
sacrifices for Jesus. She followed in obedience
what Joseph, her husband, told her.
Counting everything, we consider the
Blessed Virgin Mary as our own mother, too.
She is the Mother of the Church, thus, our
mother. We venerate her as our mother.
After Fr. Randys talk, we meditated on

the following: Who is most in need of love

in my family and neighborhood, and how
can I show mercy and compassion to him
or her? After that, we sung We are all
Gods children.
The third speaker was Rt. Rev. Msgr.
Higinio Velarde who talked about MKK
as a School of Discipleship. According
to him in 1995, Pope John Paul II came
for the World Youth Day and there were
around five million who attended. In 2015,
Pope Francis came to visit the Philippines
and the estimated crowd was about six
million. There is one difference aside
from the grandstand and the many rows of
people near the altar, behind was a sea of
humanity. That occasion was remembered
and this time the people were divided into
quadrants because the Pope wanted to see
everybody. By quadrants, the swarm of
people was to be reduced to small groups,
and that is the magic in being small. The
Pope could be able to penetrate. This idea
of being small started in South Africa,
because the people have so many needs,
and by dividing them into small groups, it
would be manageable to reach everybody.

Man needs belongingness, and because

of this need he wants to be identified with
a group or a community, identifying his self
with others by introducing himself to what
group he belongs.
The parish, in all its pastoral activities,
aims to make disciples of Jesus, through
worship, education, services and the youth.
She wants to reach for something deeper,
a Church in communion, which is a sign
of union. As Church and as People of God,
we share in the three-fold office of Christ
prophetic, priestly and kingly.
The essential element for being part
of a Christian community is to strive to
integrate faith with daily life. We must
merge ourselves among the poor and
identify ourselves with the poor by living
in close proximity and interacting with one
another regularly.
We pray as one, we gather together
for faith-sharing, we show concern for
our brothers and sisters in time of their
sufferings, bereavement, and other matters
where they need assistance. This is the
Magagmay nga Krisitianong Katilingban in
action!

Fiesta 2015 Committee Heads Meet for Evaluation

ebruary 4, 2015. The Fiesta Committee

heads, together with Msgr. Higinio C.
Velarde and Frs. Nathaniel G. Gentizon
and Randy G. Doromal, assistant parish
priests, and Fr. Noel Gomez, the priest-incharge of the Choir during the celebration,
were present at the 2015 Fiesta Evaluation
meeting. Among the lay participants present
were the cluster heads and some members
of the Liturgical committee, Temporalities,
and General Services. They were to evaluate
the activities and preparations of this years
Jaro Fiesta at the La Isabelita Hall.
The committee heads were grouped
according to their clusters and they

mentioned that all recommendations

and data during the evaluation must be
kept for review in the future and basis
for planning for Fiesta 2016. Thus, the
documents should be encoded and hard
copy must be distributed to the parish
priest and assistant priests for review
during the parish administration meeting.
Msgr. Velarde gave his message and
thanksgiving to all who worked for the
success of this years fiesta.
To adjourn the evaluation meeting,
Msgr. Velarde led the group in singing
Salve Regina and gave the final blessing.

e can see groups of young people

strolling, chatting, eating and
playing around the plaza before
the Fiesta. They are enjoying each others
company especially if he is with her
girlfriend. While they are in the street, here
we are members of Jaro Parish Youth Ministry
spending time in the church, preparing the
things needed for our Fiesta. We are helping
at the Panorama, organizing and arranging
the special issue of Candle Light entitled,
Celebrating Marys Love for the Poor. One of
the topics included in the issue is about the
scholarship given by the parish. Many of our
young people have been granted to be one of
the scholars. Some of them are members of
CANDLE LIGHT (Feb. 8 - 14, 2015)

the JPYM Council. These young people are

poor but deserving students who strive
and work hard to achieve their dreams. All
of them aspire for one goal, to uplift their
family from poverty. As they cry for help,
Mary prays for them also.
Indeed, Mary loves us so much that she
cannot just watch us. She cares for us. She
comforts us. As a way of gratitude to her,
these scholars helped in preparing food for
our workers, choir, ushers, lay ministers,
and indigents. They served the foods,
washed the dishes and cleans the dining
area.
During the Fiesta, we were assigned
to be the greeters at the La Isabelita Hall

where the bishops, priests, religious women

and some visitors gathered and ate. They
were approachable and happy celebrating
the Fiesta with us. Some of the priests would
ask us if we have already eaten and would
invite us to eat inside. We can see in their
eyes the sparks of happiness that they have
meet their old friends, brothers and sisters.
Some of them travelled far just to celebrate
with us. At the 5:30PM Mass, we also served
as Ushers. There were many people that we
cannot pass between them. Despite of that,
we continue to wear our genuine smiles for
we know that the collection will redound for
the good of the Parish and for the greater
glory of God.
