The Sabbath Part 1

What is a Sabbath?
This is from the 1828 AMERICAN DICTIONARY OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE.

SABBATH, noun
1. The day which God appointed to be observed by the Jews as a day of rest
from all secular labor or employments, and to be kept holy and consecrated to
his service and worship. This was originally the seventh day of the week, the day
on which God rested from the work of creation; and this day is still observed by
the Jews and some christians, as the sabbath But the christian church very early
begun and still continue to observe the first day of the week, in commemoration
of the resurrection of Christ on that day, by which the work of redemption was
completed. Hence it is often called the Lords day. The heathen nations in the
north of Europe dedicated this day to the sun, and hence their christian
descendants continue to call the day Sunday. But in the United States, christians
have to a great extent discarded the heathen name, and adopted the Jewish
name sabbath
2. Intermission of pain or sorrow; time of rest.
Peaceful sleep out the sabbath of the tomb.
3. The sabbatical year among the Israelites. Leviticus 25:2.

Now let us look and see what the Concordance says about the word
SABBATH.
H7676

shabbath
shab-bawth'
Intensive from H7673; intermission, that is, (specifically) the Sabbath: - (+ every) sabbath.
The Sabbath is one of the LAWS given in the TEN COMMANDMENTS.
Exodus
Exo 20:8 Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy (set apart);
Exo 20:9 six days you shall labor and do all your work;

Exo 20:10 and the seventh day is a Sabbath to YAHWEH your Elohim; you shall not do any
work, you, and your son, and your daughter, your male slave and your slave-girl, and your
livestock, and your stranger who is in your gates.
Exo 20:11 For in six days YAHWEH made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all which is in
them, and He rested on the seventh day; on account of this YAHWEH blessed the Sabbath
day and sanctified it.
Exo 20:12 Honor your father and your mother, so that your days may be long on the land which
YAHWEH your Elohim is giving to you.
We see it was not only people that rested, but also animals. The Most High
is serious about HIS Sabbath. Even the stranger with in their gates had to
rest as well. Some would say only Yisrael has to keep the Sabbath. We
must understand there was only one LAW given for Yisrael and the
stranger.
Exo 12:49 One law shall be to the native, and to the visitor, the one staying in your midst
Num 15:16 There shall be one law and one ordinance both for you and for the alien that lives
with you.
Now we see it does not matter Yisraelite or Gentile. There is one LAW for
everyone. There is no difference.
A SIGH ON HIS PEOPLE
Did you know THE MOST HIGH YAH places a sign on HIS people? Lets see
what that sign is.
Exodus
Exo 31:13 And you speak to the sons of Israel, charging them, only My Sabbaths you shall keep;
for it is a sign between Me and you for your generation; to know that I am YAHWEH your
sanctifier.
Exo 31:14 And you shall keep the Sabbath, for it is holy for you; the profaners of it shall sure be
executed; for everyone doing work in it, that soul shall be cut off from the midst of his
people.
Exo 31:15 Work may be done six days, and on the seventh day is aSabbath of rest, holy to
YAHWEH; everyone doing work on the Sabbath day surely shall be put to death.
Exo 31:16 And the sons of Israel shall guard the Sabbath, to observe and do the Sabbath for their
generations; it is a never ending covenant.
Exo 31:17 It is a sign forever between Me and the sons of Israel; for in six days YAHWEH made
the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day He rested and was refreshed.
Ezekiel
Eze 20:12 And I also gave them My Sabbaths to be a sign between Me and them, that they might
know that I am YAHWEH who sets them apart.
Eze 20:13 But the house of Israel rebelled against Me in the wilderness. They did not walk in My
statutes, and they despised My judgments, which if a man does them he will even live by

them. And they greatly profaned My Sabbaths. Then I said, I will pour out My fury on them
in the wilderness, to consume them.
Eze 20:14 But I worked for My name's sake, that it should not be profaned in the eyes of the
nations, before whom I brought them out, in their eyes.
Eze 20:15 And I also lifted up My hand to them in the wilderness, that I would not bring them
into the land flowing with milk and honey which I had given; it is the glory to all the lands,
Eze 20:16 because they despised My judgments, and they did not walk in My statutes, and they
profaned My Sabbaths; for their heart went after their idols.
Eze 20:17 And My eye spared them, from destroying them, and I did not make an end of them in
the wilderness.
Eze 20:18 But I said to their sons in the wilderness, Do not walk in the statutes of your fathers
and do not keep their judgments, and do not defile yourselves with their idols.
Eze 20:19 I am YAHWEH your Elohim, walk in My statutes, and keep My judgments, and do
them.
Eze 20:20 And guard My Sabbaths to keep them holy, and they shall be a sign between Me and
you, that you may know that I am YAHWEH your Elohim
WHAT ARE SOME INSTRUCTIONS ON THE SABBATH
Do not kindle a fire.
Exo 35:3 You shall not kindle a fire in all your dwellings on the day of the Sabbath.
We know that kindling a fire is work. During that time period they had to
physically start a fire and it was work to get it going.
Cooking
Exo 16:22 And it came about on the sixth day, they gathered double bread, two omers for one.
And all the leaders of the congregation came and reported to Moses.
Exo 16:23 And he said to them, That is what YAHWEH said, Tomorrow is a rest, a holy Sabbath
to YAHWEH. What you will bake, bake. And boil what you will boil. And lay up for
yourselves all that is left over, to keep it until the morning.
Exo 16:24 And they laid it up until the morning, as Moses commanded. And it did not stink and
no maggot was in it.
No work no matter where you are
Lev 23:3 Work is to be done six days, and on the seventh day shall be a Sabbath of rest, a holy
gathering; you shall do no work; it is a Sabbath to YAHWEH in all your dwellings.
Does it matter whether you are in Yisrael or not, whether you are in the land of
your captivity or not? Lets look up the word dwellings in Hebrew.
H4186

moshab moshab
mo-shawb', mo-shawb'
From H3427; a seat; figuratively a site; abstractly a session; by extension an abode (the place or
the time); by implication population: - assembly, dwell in, dwelling (-place), wherein (that)
dwelt (in), inhabited place, seat, sitting, situation, sojourning.
This means no matter where you are or sojourning through, you are to keep the
SABBATH.

Buying or selling
Nehemiah
Neh 13:15 In those days I saw in Judah ones treading wine presses on the Sabbath, and bringing
in sheaves and loading donkeys ; and also wine, grapes, and figs, and all burdens, which they
brought into Jerusalem on the Sabbath day. And I testified against them on the day they sold
food.
Neh 13:16 Men of Tyre also lived in it, who brought fish and all wares, and were selling on the
Sabbath to the sons of Judah, even in Jerusalem.
Neh 13:17 And I contended with the nobles of Judah and said to them, What is this evil thing
that you do, defiling the Sabbath day?
Neh 13:18 Did not your fathers do this, and did not our Elohim bring all this evil on us and on
this city? Yet you are adding more wrath on Israel by defiling the Sabbath.
Neh 13:19 And it happened, when the gates of Jerusalem began to be shaded as the sun was
setting, just before the Sabbath began, I commanded that the gates should be shut, and
commanded that they should not be opened until after the Sabbath. And I stationed some of
my servants at the gates, so that there should be no merchandise brought in on the Sabbath
day.
Neh 13:20 And the merchants and sellers of all the wares stayed the night outside Jerusalem
once or twice.
Neh 13:21 Then I testified against them and said to them, Why are you staying around the wall?
If you do it again, I will send a hand against you. From that time they did not come on the
Sabbath.
Neh 13:22 And I said to the Levites that they should be cleansing themselves, and they should
come guarding the gates, to sanctify the Sabbath day. O my Elohim, remember me for this
also and spare me according to the greatness of Your mercy.
So we see that THE MOST HIGH through His prophet does not approve of any
buying or selling on the SABBATH. Notice that on this day, it is the busiest day
for buying and selling. This is the day that everyone goes to the mall or goes
shopping. Satan has made the day that Master Yah has set aside as Holy the
busiest day of the week for having fun.
Most people excuse the SABBATH as the old law, however the Messiah says
different.
Matthew
Mat 5:17 Do not think that I came to annul the Torah or the Prophets; I did not come to annul,
but to fulfill.
Mat 5:18 Truly I say to you, Until the heaven and the earth pass away, in no way shall one yod or
one stroke pass away from the Torah until all comes to pass.
Mat 5:19 Therefore, whoever loosens one of these commandments, the least, and shall teach
men so, he shall be called the worst in the kingdom of Heaven. But whoever does and
teaches them, this one shall be called great in the kingdom of Heaven.
Luke
Luk 16:17 But it is easier for the heaven and the earth to pass away than one letter of the Torah
to pass away.

We see that The Messiah did not come to change the law or take away one letter of
the law. The Messiah himself kept the SABBATH so lets follow his example.
Lets not make the scripture say what we want but be obeidiant to what the
scripture, THE WORD IN THE FLESH wants.
