APPLICATIONS
Dissolving / diluting
ALBATEX DS-I protective colloid can be diluted in all proportions by pouring on cold or
warm water.
Required amount
Owing to the wide variety of applications of ALBATEX DS-I protective colloid it is
impossible to give specific recommendations, however, the amount of ALBATEX DS-I
protective colloid required for exhaust and continuous applications will usually fall within
the range given below:

0.53g/l ALBATEX DS-I

The following is offered as a guide to the use of ALBATEX DS-I protective colloid in
individual applications.
Dyeing:
ALBATEX DS-I protective colloid will effectively sequester the alkaline earth metal salts
present in hard water without removing the metal ions present in some dyes. The
concentration required will depend upon the hardness of the water and will fall within
the following range:

0.52g/l ALBATEX DS-I

In the above applications ALBATEX DS-I protective colloid should be added to the
treatment liquor first and thoroughly dispersed before any other auxiliaries are added.
Washing off reactive dyes:
ALBATEX DS-I protective colloid is suitable for washing off reactive dyed or printed
goods. It promotes solubility of the hydrolyzed color and prevents re-deposition onto the
fabric or yarn. ALBATEX DS-I protective colloid should be added into the first hot washing
treatment and the quantity required will be:

13g/l ALBATEX DS-I

NOTES
Calcium inactivation
1 g/l ALBATEX DS-I protective colloid disperses up to about 0.25 g/l CaCO3. This is
equivalent to a water hardness of about 18eH. Determination is by a modified Hampshire
test method.
Treatment of gray state cotton
ALBATEX DS-I protective colloid is particularly recommended for dyeing gray-state cotton
and for the wash-dye procedure.
Treatment of pre bleached cotton
Calcium and magnesium can originate from hard water and/or the cotton. Cotton can
contain up to 3000 ppm hardness salts (calcium, magnesium), depending on origin and
pretreatment. Pretreated cotton can still contain up to 300 ppm calcium and magnesium.
ALBATEX DS-I protective colloid must also be used for dyeing in soft water. In reactive
dyeing with soda as fixing alkali, the formation of calcium carbonate can result in stains,
markings and unlevelness. ALBATEX DS-I protective colloid prevents all this.

Washing off processes

Hard water hinders soaping of dyeings and prints produced with reactive dyes. ALBATEX
DS-I protective colloid can counteract this effect. Water is not the only potential source of
hardness ions. They can also be transferred to the soaping bath by the cotton.
ALBATEX DS-I protective colloid is not recommended for washing off dyeings and prints
produced with disperse dyes. For this we recommend ERIOPON OS.
Conventional detergents (e.g. soap) are frequently used for washing off dyeings and
prints. These products have disadvantages (e. g. inadequate stability in hard water, foam
generation or electrolyte effect. ALBATEX DS-I protective colloid is markedly superior to
such products.
