Introduction
We have successfully completed two years of e-publishing this magazine. As we step
into the third year, we will focus on the various nyAsa prakaraNas involved in the shri
vidyA upAsanA. ShrI cidAnandanAthA had prescribed reading of sUta saMhitA atleast
once every year for his shishyAs. Hence, starting this issue we will be bringing some of
the chapters of sUta saMhitA along with the English meaning of the same.

In this issue we bring the vAcika nirUpaNa vaibhavaM chapter from the yajna vaibhava
khANDam of sUta saMhitA. This chapter explains in detail the manifestation of the
mAtrukAkSharAs and the prabhAvA. We have included the dasha mAtrukA nyAsAs and
the phalashruti of this dasha mAtruka nyAsA describes this to be like a kalpavRukSha
for a sAdhakA.

Further, after providing all the material benefits to the sAdhakA, it then merges the
entire prapancha (universe) into itself and bestows mOkShA.

Finally, bhUtalipi nyAsA as prescribed by lalitOpAkhyANA is provided in detail. It is
provided with a chakra nyAsA, anulOma nyAsA, and vilOma nyAsA. LalitOpAkhyANam
also suggests that the bhUtalipi nyAsA should be followed immediately with kAmarati
nyAsA for completion purposes. Hence, we have included the kAmArati nyAsA also
along with.

These nyAsAs cannot be taken lightly and readers are strongly adviced to check with
their Gurus prior to start practicing any nyAsA or procedure as detailed in this issue.
We thank ShrI yOgAmbA samEta AtmAnandanAthA (Shri Ramesh Kutticad) for
authoring the Q&A section.

ShrI sUtA says
Now, I will explain about vAcika yajnA with the most reverence. The subtler and
superior of the parA is the caitanya lakShaNA (consciousness quality/description) of
ShivA.
More explanation
In the shivamAhAtmya khaNDa of the sUta samhitA, shrI sutA explains that the
mAtRukA can be categorized into three types sthUla, sUkShmA, and sUkShmatarA.
This difference can only be understood by guru upadEshA and not by any other means
(not by reading innumerable shAstrAs).

qiM c k xjs xq xqiUm c |

amSzi r llrj zxMOp ||
Depending on the adhikArA (condition evolutionary state) of the jIvA, the usage of the
mAtRukA can be classified as prathamA (beginner), madhyamA (mid level), and uttamA
(superior). The Prathama adhikAri (beginner) will use the sthUla mAtRukA. The
madhyama (mid level) adhikAri will use the sUkShma mAtRukA and the uttama
(superior) adhikAri will use the sUkShmatara mAtRukA. During the process of evolution,
the matured souls burn the karmas and those souls that are not mature (ripened) apply
the focus on the material enjoyments offered by the universe. For the ripened souls, the

10

entire universe appears useless. During the dissolution (pralayA), the entire universe
that is seized by mAyA (illusion) will merge into its causal base, the niShkala parashivA.
The karmas that are left unburnt will also get burnt and merged during this process.
During the pralaya, this moving jagat (universe) gets absorbed. The element earth gets
merged into the element water. The element water gets absorbed into the element fire.
The element fire merges into the element air which then becomes one with the element
space. This space element merges into the non-manifested which then merges into the
niShkala (indivisible) bindu or brahman. This can be categorized into three acit,
mishrA, and cit, or sthUla, sUkShma, and parA. This is also referred to as bIjam,
nAdam, and bindu. The acit is nothing but the sthUlA referred by bIjam. The citacit
mishrA is the sUkShmA referred by the nAdam. The pure chit is the parA which is
referred by bindu. This parA bindu is nothing but the parashivA. At the time of creation,
when this bindu gets divided, a humming sound is first formed and shrutIs call this as
shabda brahmam. This bindu, which is the seed for the entire creation attaches this
shabdha brahmam to the mUlAdhArA of all living beings. This is the kAraNa (cause) for
the prANA.

SWm qskUxqlxqi xqUh |

This shabda brahma assuming the state of a kAraNa bindu is called parA vAk. Due it
is own all-pervading quality, the subtlest of the subtle, and indivisible nature, it occupies
the seed state. This parA vAk can only be realized through the nispandhA (steady) jnAni
state. When this shabda brahma starts to move upwards from the mUlAdhArA to the
maNipUrakA, it assumes the state of a kArya bindu and can be envisaged by the mind
and assumes the form of IshvarA and is called as pashvanti. Since this shabda
brahmam reaches the state for the first which can be visualized, it has an apt name
pashyanti.
When the shabda brahmam travels further up and reaches the anAhata, this can be
definitely understood by the budhi and assumes the state of nAdha bindu and assumes
the form for hiraNyagarbhA and is called as madhyamA. When the shabda brahmam
travels further up and reaches the vishuddhi, it can be heard by the ears and expands

11

itself into the akArAdi kShakArAnta varNamAlA (a kSha mAtrukA letters) and takes
the form of virAt and is called vaikhari.
This vaikharI is called the sthUla mAtrukA and is used by the Prathama adhikAri
(beginners). madhyamA is called the sUkShma mAtrukA and is used by the madhyama
adhikAri (mid-level).
The kArya and kAraNa bindu forms, parA and pashyanti are used by the uttamAdhikAri
(superior).

Here, the shabda brahmA that travels from parA to brahmarandhrA attains various
states (sUkshamatara, sukShamA, and sthUlA) expands from one letter, two letters,
and 51 letters merges back in the brahmarandhrA as one letter. The one letter akSharA
is the praNava mantra and by its own svabhAvA (nature) it manifests into two letters
(which is nothing by the ajapA mantra ha and sa ) which again becomes one when
merged into brahmarandhrA.
More explanation
The parAshaktI form of shabdha brahmAn from mUlAdhArA when it rises and reaches
the parashivAs uttama sthAnA of brahmarandhrA, it merges and takes the form of
ardhanArIshvarA. The masculine portion takes the ha kArA and the feminine portion
takes the sa kArA. This is also the puruShA and prakRutI tatvA states purushA is
ha and prakRuti is sa. When the merging happens the bindu is attached making it
sOhaM since sa- kArA travels and meets the ha kArA, sOhaM is the first
formation. Now, if the attached bindu takes the form of the puruShA, for sAmarasya
(equality), the prakRuti takes the form of visargA and during this transformation,
parashivA merges into parAshakti forming haMsaH resulting in a complete harmony.

This is first and the most important mantra which by its own nature is known. The
meaning of the word mantra is given here as That which saves who contemplates
using the mind.

14

More explanation
Mantra is formed from parts man and tra The part man refers to the word
manana which means contemplation through mind. This very fact describes that
simply uttering the mantra is not enough. Understanding the meaning and
contemplation of the same is what is expected. Now, the tra portion refers to the word
trAyatE which means saves. This gives the crude meaning Contemplation saves.
But saves from what?

qlliumSxr ri qWi pri |

The above sutra states that contemplation of the meaning relieves one from the great
fear. The great fear every jIvA possess is the fear of death. This fear of death is a direct
result of ajAnA which is the result of avidhyA and mAyA. This ajnAnA can ONLY be
burnt by the fire called jnAnAgni. Once the jnAnA that there is NO TWO and experiential
state of advaitA is reached, the great fear of death is burnt. Thus, the purpose of a
mantra is to elevate the jIvA that contemplates the meaning using his mind to the state
of a jnAni.

No mantrAs can be formed without the alphabets and hence the mAtrukA dEvI is

This mAtrukAdEvi has a face looking downward and also another face looking upward.
This supreme, pure, and the AdyA (first) becomes the first mantrarUpi.

15

More explanation
The nAda bindu from the anAhata when moved up towards vishuddhi, manifests itself
into akArAdikShakArAnta varNamAlA mAtRukAs. The same manifestation when on its
way back to the mUlAdhArA merges into the nAda bindu into the kArya and kAraNa
bindu and becomes parA vAk. This equates to the shvAsA and prashvAsa of the prANA
movement. There are three forms of prANA one is a downward facing form where the
pUrakA (inhalation) happens (This is called apANA). The second is the upward facing
form where the rEcakA (exhalation) happens (This is called prANA). The third is the
sAmarasya (equality) of both the inhalation and exhalation and that is called kumbakA
(withhold). In this state it pervades the entire being and hence called as vyANA.
Interestingly, the usage of the bIjAs shrI mAtRukA and mantrAtmikI (ee) and the
discussion of the two faces and its sAmarasya relates to the bindu and visarga ( see
description for shloka 8) gives the secret indication of the kAmakalA. Immediately, the
next shloka (12) mentions that this can only be learnt through guru upadEshA.
In the lalitAsahasraNamA, the 529th nAmA xuuhmzpi refers to the
mAtrukAkSharAs radiating through the thousand petalled downward facing lotus

(AkqZ) located on the brahmarandhrA. The fifty mAtRukAkSharAs A to when

considered in anulOma and vilOma patterns, would become 100. The presiding dieties

Aqi to qui are seated on ten petals thus forming the thousand petalled lotus.

AmbAji
AmbAji is one of the 51 Shakti pIThAs and is considered to be one of the most
important. Satis heart is believed to have fallen here. There is no idol inside this temple.
It is believed that a kUrma pRuShTha shrI yantrA is installed here on a inner cave like
wall. This is well decorated to give an appearance like a mahA yantrA. The name of the
dEvi is Asuri ambA. The bhairavA associated to this temple is the vaTuka bhairava (See
photo for the vatuka bhairavA statue at AmbAji).

The original seat of the Shakti piTh is considered

to be on the near by Ghabbar Hill (See photo for
the Ghabbar temple). This can be reached either
by climbing the mountain steps or taking the winch
to reach the top. An akhanDa jyOti is located at
this point and the darshan of the lower ambAji
temple is a treat.

This temple is located in the state of Gujarat. It is in the northern border (about 40 kms)
from Mount Abu. It is about 200 kms from Ahmedabad and takes approximately 3 hours
to reach AmbAji. For more information check the temple web site at:

1. Is it not sufficient to adopt the procedures and instructions received from
the Guru, besides searching matters from various sources? How to arrest
the sanchala buddhi from sthira buddhi, consequent on knowing the
matters from other sources?
The question on non-revelation of Lalita sahasranama by Lord Hayagriva (Guru)
to his sihshya (Sage Agastya), shows us an intrinsic rule, To ask. Now a
question arises, if we dont know that such a thing exists, how will we ask? The
answer was to perform tapasya- penance, with single pointed devotion. You will
be inspired to ask the question. Now, if we examine the above question in this
context, we find that just simply leaving all to the Guru and doing no inquiry will
not result in the sadhaka getting higher experiences. Thus searching from
various sources also can be a type of tapasya wherein, you may be inspired to
ask your guru for guidance and clarity in a particular aspect thus taking the
sadhaka to newer heights of Devis experience.

2. Is addition of praava mandatory for all mantras? If No, then how do we

use praava in japa, stotra or arcana?
No, it is not required to add praava in mantras as a matter of tradition. Since,
syllables of a mantra are fixed, eg, navkari means nine-syllable mantra, bl
mantra has three or six or nine syllables. So addition of praava will make the
above examples to ten-syllable mantra and four-seven-ten syllable mantra
respectively. Some mantras have praava in them, eg- Mahgaapati mantra is
twenty eight-syllable, which is inclusive of starting syllable which is praava, so
while doing japa, praava gets repeated. Mahoda /annapr mantra has
praava inbuilt as a syllable; atkara mantra also has praava as its first
syllable in the revelatory verse (uddhra sloka).

63

In japa, stotra praava or arcana praava is to be chanted once while starting

japa, stotra or arcana and once again in the end.
For the above examples, it will be praava-navkari (required counts) -praava;
praava-bl (required counts)-praava; In Mahgaapati mantra japa, the first
praava will stand alone, then the japa of Mahgaapati for required counts and
in the end praava.
In pryaa of stotrs like sahasranma the procedure will be: praava- r mt
up to lalitmbika - praava. In arcana of the same, the similar procedure is
suggested by r Bhskara rya by retaining the same format for pryaa
adding only bhuvana and r bja before names for arcana aspraava- hrM rM
r mtre namaH up to hrM rM lalitmbikyai namaH - praava.
