CONTINUOUS AND COMPREHENSIVE EVALUATION has been visualised in the school
education since the new education policy in 1986. In order to get a holistic profile of a learner
regular assessment of both scholastic and co-scholastic aspects has to be made over a considerable
period of time.
If the quality of assessment is not reliable it will not be accepted in the country or
outside. In this new system the progress of a learner is measured through a variety of activities
using appropriate tools. The learner gets enough chances to improve on his own as his weaknesses
are revealed while doing activities. Self motivation as well as extrinsic motivation pushes him forward.
Besides the learner is rewarded whenever his performance is good. This develops high self esteem
among learners. That is self learning gets motivated among learners. This is one of the wonderful
effects of using formative assessment activities in class room learning. So formative assessment is
purely for the promotion of progress among learners and it is an inseparable part of the learning
process.
At the end of a term and the year summative assessment is conducted. It is in the form of
written examination. The experience and practice the learner received during formative assessment
are made use of while writing the summative assessment. When we look at CCE very closely we can
see that formative assessment activities are unavoidable to achieve learner growth and development.
Because it takes care of both scholastic and co-scholastic aspects of learning. The summative
assessment just tells us how much a learner received at the end of a learning period, where as
formative assessment activities provide us the actual measure of the progress of the learners.
Many difficulties are faced by practicing teachers in our schools to implement CCE system
and to keep the records of what they have done. Systematically designed Registers should be used
for recording the scientifically assessed learner progress. The activities for formative assessments
have to be selected and planned well in advance in order to implement them in the class room
effectively. Meticulous recording of the marks awarded to the learners is equally important. As all
these are time bound programmes the teacher cannot postpone the recording of marks.
The Kerala Institute for Educational Research (KINFER), Valavoor, Kottayam, Kerala has
been in tune with the designing of Registers as well as formative assessment materials since 2001
when CCE was introduced.
I take this opportunity to express our immense gratitude to Dr.V Bindhu, Principal,

AISWARAYA Public School, Kollam, Kerala for the efforts and intiatives taken in bringing out
these registers.
The CCE Registers published and distributed by KINFER have been received with applause
by the teachers in India. I am sure that our books will be found highly useful in the CBSE schools
in our country.
