Six Sigma
Six Sigma is a series of steps to measure and improve the effectiveness of a process or operation.
This program provides us with a set of interventions and statistical tools that can lead to substantial
gains in quality. With the Six Sigma strategy, it is possible to measure the degree of variation,
evaluate the process, and identify areas where improvements would increase product consistency
and reliability.
The meaning of Six Sigma. Taken from a letter in the Greek alphabet, the term Sigma is used in
statistics as a measure of variation. The philosophy of Six Sigma recognizes that there is a direct
correlation between the number of product defects and wasted operating costs, to the level of
customer satisfaction. The Six Sigma statistic measures the capability of the process to perform
defect-free work. The Sigma value indicates how often defects are likely to occur. Standard
controlled processes having a 3 Sigma limit will produce over 60,000 defects per million
opportunities over a period of 12 months or more up to a staggering 20 to 30 percent of sales
cost. A process that is controlled to 6 Sigma limits will produce just four defects per million well
under 10 percent of sales cost.
The value of being Lean. Using Lean methodologies and tools, we've replaced outdated massproduction systems with Lean systems that focus on eliminating waste: time, labor, or material that
doesn't add value. In-process cycle times and lead times drop, inventory shrinks, and quality
