WINTER SESSION
(JANUARY MAY 2014)

TOPIC:
Case Study on Jet Airways.
AREA:
Retrenchment by Jet Airways in 2008.
INTRODUCTION TO JET AIRWAYS:
Jet Airways is the second largest Indian airline based in Mumbai, Maharashtra,
both, in terms of market share and passengers carried. It is owned by Naresh Goyal.
It operates over 400 flights daily to 76 destinations worldwide. Its main hub
is Mumbai, with secondary hubs at Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru and Pune. It
has an international hub at Brussels Airport, Belgium.
Jet Airways was incorporated as an air taxi operator on 1 April 1992. It started
commercial operations on 5 May 1993 with a fleet of four leased Boeing 737300 aircraft. In January 1994 a change in the law enabled Jet Airways to apply for
scheduled airline status, which was granted on 4 January 1995. NareshGoyal who
already owned Jetair (Private) Limited, which provided sales and marketing for
foreign airlines in India set up Jet Airways as a full-service scheduled airline to
compete against state-owned Indian Airlines.
ABOUT THE CASE STUDY:
On October 16, 2008, Jet Airways announced that it would lay off nearly 1,100 of its
staff members. This was exactly a day after it had already laid off around 800 of its
cabin crew members. The company decided to lay off these employees with no prior
notice but offered them a months remuneration.
Jet received criticism from several quarters for retrenching its employees. In the last
week of November 2008, Jet decided on salary cuts. 1
OBJECTIVES:
1. To understand the reasons behind the decision of the HR management of
Jet Airways and the various factors and challenges they faced.
2. To study the possible effects of retrenchment on the employees, both ex
and current employees.
3. To understand the legal repercussion, if any, of Jet Airways decision to
terminate the employment of the employees.
