Creation is also discussed outside Genesis in Jobe 38, Romans 1, and in Isaiah
44-45.
God made a commitment to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and their descendants for
the nation of Israel in Genesis 12, 15 and 18. We should pray for the Nation
of Israel and Gods purpose of Israel. Gods hand is on Israel and therefore
we do not need to worry about Israel, but the same cannot be said for America.
Overview of Creation
Two views on Origin
There are two world views on our origin. The first view is that mankind is a
result of an accident or randomness. This view is taught today to our
impressionable children by the government run public school system. The other
world view is that we are a result from a deliberate view from a designer.
Genesis 1 goes the detail on how God created everything in 6 days.
Proving the Bible as 100% truth
There are hidden messages in the Bible. If anyone tells you that you cannot
prove the Bible, they are wrong and it demonstrates that they dont know the
Bible. You can prove the Bible is true by demonstrating the prophecy that has
already predicted and fulfilled, and showing the integrated design of the
Bible by these hidden codes that we have access to.
A Finite universe
The great discovery of 20th century science is that the universe is not
infinite; its finite. The term known as thermal decay tells us that heat
flows from hot bodies to cold bodies. If the universe was infinitely old, the
universe would have a uniform temperature. The temperature of the universe is
not uniform, and therefore it is not infinitely old, and therefore it had a
beginning. We had a beginning and we will have an end.
The Big Bang Theory
The big bang theory suggests first there was nothing, and then it exploded.
There are many different types of big bang theories with the first given by
Einstein who later regretted ever suggesting it.
Entropy vs. Design
Entropy (randomness) is another proof that we were not created by accident.
Randomness and design are mutually exclusive, and we cannot have both a
precise design and randomness or accident. Design and entropy are polar
opposites. The law of entropy means that things always seem to move toward
entropy. So the philosophy that a big bang is entropy is impossible because
an event so huge could have been by accident. It is not by random chance or
accident that we live on planet earth, at the only precise distance humans
could survive.
We do not have this very complex body made up with complex
DNA, and all sorts of bodily systems that just happened to occur by accident.

1 | Page

A design was needed to produce us, as randomness could not. There is only one
field of science in which scientists close their eyes and pretend the entropy
laws are not there, and that is the field of biology. They dont recognize
that you cannot create information. When they try to tell you that
organization and life happen on its own chance, they are completely ignorant
dealing with the laws of entropy. In addition, the law of thermodynamics says
that matter/energy cannot be created or destroyed. There is a new field of
mathematics called chaos theory and it is the study about the randomness of
the universe. They cannot find randomness which pulls the rug out from
underneath the evolutionists.
Complexity of the Simple Cell
An evolutionist by the name of Michael Denton wrote a book in 1986 that
although the tiniest bacterial cells are very small, each is a delicately
designed piece of machinery made up of 100 billion atoms and far more
complicated than any machine built by man, and absolutely without parallel in
the living world. This simple cell is more complex than anything man has ever
created. The cell is unequal from anything man created on earth, and it can
duplicate itself within a few hours. All cells derive from previous cells. All
DNA will also copy itself. An example worth looking at is using symphony where
you have 100 equally talented musicians and 100 instruments. You cannot play
the music until a conductor is assigned. Everyone would not know what
instrument to play and what section of the symphony they would be in (1 st or
2nd trumpet, etc). The same situation happens with cells and that they need to
know when to divide and God is their conductor.
Other Complexity examples
There are many relationships that are created that show the delicateness of
creation. You cannot have complexity on something that was created at random
or accident. Can an airplane, computer, drill, book, or anything else be put
together without someone personally designing it? No it cannot, and neither
can the universe. Some of the hundreds of relationships that show the God
created everything with great precision abound and here are just a few of
those relationships. The electron/proton ratio, distance the earth is from the
sun, the earths surface gravity, thickness of the earths crust, the earths
axis tilt, and the thickness of the ozone layer. Changing anyone of these and
many other variables, makes life non-existent on earth.
Ratio of Electron/Proton Mass
The ratio of electron to proton mass is one of those relationships. The ratio
of electrons to protons is 1 to 1836. If it was larger or smaller, molecules
would not form and life would be impossible.
Distance from the Sun to the Earth
The distance from the earth to the sun is another relationship that was
created with precise design. If the earth was closer it would be too warm to
maintain a stable water cycle. If we were further away, it would be too cold
on earth to have a water cycle.
Gravity
Surface gravity is another example. If gravity was stronger, the atmosphere
would have too much ammonia and methane. If gravity was weaker that atmosphere
would lose too much water, and it is just at that balance to make life
possible.
Thickness of the Earths Crust
The thickness of the earths crust is another relationship created with
precise design. If the crust was thicker there would be too much oxygen to be

2 | Page

transferred from the atmosphere to the earths crust. If the crust was thinner
volcanic activity would be too great.
Earths axis tilt
Another relationship created with precise design is the earths axis tilt. If
the tilt was either greater in either direction, the surface temperatures
would be too great both in the northern and southern hemispheres.
Ozone Layer
Another relationship created with perfection is the ozone layer. When these
global warming blowhards state how delicate the ozone layer is, you can easily
lure them into a trap. They make these claims they make that if the ozone
layer changes 1/10 of 1% that we will be cosmically doomed. We can then ask
them if the earth is pretty sensitively balanced, and they of course would
answer yes- which is the answer we want to hear. We then ask them who balanced
it? Randomness and design are mutually exclusive, so if they admit how
delicate the ozone layer is, it could not have happened by randomness or
accident. If the ozone layer was greater, surface temperature would be too
low. If there was less of an ozone layer, the surface temperature would be too
high.
All of these and hundreds and all of these relationships have to be
balanced right and it is just more proof that contrary to what many biologists
and public school administrators believe. God is the designer of the universe,
and these things and hundreds other things that we have taken for granted did
not happen by circumstance.
Creation of the Solar System
There is no plausible explanation that cannot support a solar origin of the
planets, meaning the planets could not have generated from the sun. The
largest planets are furthest from the sun. If the planets were created and
shot out from the sun, the largest planets being the heaviest, would be
closest to the son, not furthest away. As we examine the planets carefully we
discover they are in pairs. There are three pairs with rapid spin rates among
our planets, each within 3 percent of each other. There is always a pair that
has about the same spin rate. Earth and Mars have the same spin rate, Jupiter
and Saturn have the same spin rate, and Uranus and Neptune have the same spin
rate. These same spin rates suggest they have a relationship with one another.
Earth and Mars also have the same axis tilts.
Design of the Woodpecker
Another example of incredible design is the woodpecker. He obviously has a
very strong beak. His pounding is so hard that he has special cartridge
between his beak and his head because of all of the force between his beak and
the wood. His tail feathers are designed to be a tripod for the shocks. Most
birds have 3 toes in front and 1 one in back. However the woodpecker was
designed with 2 toes up front and 2 in back to help so he can grip the bark of
the tree better. He is designed for what he does. He has a very unusual tongue
because he has to use his tongue to get into the larvae in the tree, and his
tongue also has barbs on the end to grab the larvae.
Design of Birds- Siberian Plover
How birds migrate and fly from one part of the earth is still a mystery to
this day. One example of birds migrating is The Siberian Plover. This Siberian
Plover is a little bird that starts in Alaska and flies to Hawaii. The bird
weighs around 130 grams. He will have to generate 225,000 wing flaps to travel
the 2800 miles entirely over water with nowhere to rest. He will have to
consume enough food for energy to last the entire 2800 miles during this 3
day, 4 night trip that will take 88 hours. In preparation for this flight he
eats enough food so his body weight increases 70 grams, or around 54%. An
analogy would be for a 200 pound man would have to weigh in at 308 in just 3
months. But heres the question. How did the birds know they would have to

3 | Page

consume over 50% of their bodyweight to get to Hawaii? How are the birds
supposed to find those tiny islands in the Pacific? If the birds didnt find
them, they would crash into the ocean because their energy would be used up.
Are we to assume this original Golden Plover just decided to gain 70g with the
intent to fly off by accident? In addition to answering all of these
questions, there is another problem. Hawaii is an 88 hour trip. Scientists can
confirm he only has enough fuel to travel the 72 of the 88 hours. They make
the entire trip by flying in the V formation and they save their fuel that
way. These birds could not make it the distance without each other. The birds
are essentially drafting from one another like you see with race cars and they
save about 20% of their fuel by rotating positions through drafting.
Design of the Giraffe
The giraffe is an example of the unique design of every animal. He is about
19 feet tall and weighs around 2,500 pounds and can run 36 mph, he eats 200
pounds of food per day which includes 16-20 hours of eating. The giraffe
sleeps around 20 minutes per day. He can go without water for months at a
time, and in his habitat sometimes he has to. Being so tall, it takes a lot of
blood pressure to get the blood to his brain. As a result, a giraffes blood
pressure is much higher than humans blood pressure, because his brain is 18
feet in the air, is again proof as a result of design. If humans had as high
of a blood pressure as giraffes, we would have very short lives. Without any
design when he bends down, his neck that is 18 feet high is now at water level
and as a result, the blood vessels would burst. There are however valves in
the artery that close when the giraffe bends down. The blood between the last
valve and the brain is diverted into an organ that will act as a reservoir.
When the giraffe suddenly were to raise his head, he would also pass out
because no blood would go to the brain. The cure is that the reservoir that
will feed oxygenated blood to the brain and these values will soon open up
after the giraffe begins to lift his head. This again shows precise design of
the giraffe and if either of those mechanisms were not there, the giraffe
would not survive. This is just one of hundreds of example of a specific
design element needed for a particular animal that is essential for their
survival.
Design of the Bombardier Beetle
Another great example of precise design is the bombardier beetle. This beetle
has a defense mechanism so when it feels like it will be attacked, the beetle
can shoot out a spray of liquid against its enemy that is 212 degrees. How
does this beetles body contain liquid so hot? How did this beetle know how to
make and spray this liquid so that it doesnt kill itself? The evolutionists
have no answer to it.
Design of Plants and Animals
Another example of incredible design is the design of plants and animals.
Plants produce and give off oxygen and sugar which is what the animals need.
Animals on the other hand give produce and give off CO2 which is what the
plants needs. It is fascinating to realize that the plant kingdom and animal
kingdom need each other. If either one of them are taken away, the other one
ultimately vanishes because there will not be enough CO2 to keep the plants
around, and the animals need the oxygen and the sugar would eventually die
off. This again shows an intrinsic system design in the total package.
The Design of our bodily systems
The complexity of our all of bodily systems show we could have not been
created by accident. Our digestive system allows our body to keep the foods we
need, and pass out the foods we dont need when we go the bathroom. Our
circulatory system and our blood vessels are extremely complex. It allows our
blood to flow properly and respond to emergencies. The way our blood responds

4 | Page

to invaders is astonishing. Could this blood that has all of these

complexities just happen at random? Our sensory systems such as our eyes, ears
are vastly more sophisticated than any other system around. Compare our eyes
to a digital camera to understand how complex our eyes are. Our immune system
is so complex that scientists dont understand it today. The ways it fights
disease is too complex for todays scientific minds show its confusing
complexity. The central nervous system is another extremely complex system.
Our brain has 1015 connections. How much is 1015? If we have tree that had
50,000 leaves on it, and we had 10,000 trees per square mile, you would need 2
million square miles of trees, or a forest the size of the United States to
get the equivalent number of connections that we have in our brain.

Genesis 1

The Creation

Day 1- God created the heavens, and the earth; separation of light and darkness- verses 1-5
(Sunday)
On Day 1, God created the universe, heavens and the earth, separated day from
night (Genesis 1:1-5). Verse 1 says, in the beginning God created the heavens
and the earth. If I understand and believe that verse, then everything else
will fall into place. If I dont believe that verse, I have bigger problems.
So it is interesting that the Earth was created before the sun. It is also
interesting that there was light before the sun, as the sun didnt get
completed until day four. Verse 2 says the earth was formless and void and
darkness was over the surface of the deep. Jeremiah 4:23 speaks that the earth
was without form and void. We learn from the book of Job that the angels were
applauding watching the creation - When the morning stars sang together, and all the
sons of God shouted for joy?- Job 38:7. Gods first quote was in verse 3, Let
there be light. And the evening and the morning were the first day not the
morning before the evening. The Jews have adopted that concept that the day
begins at the evening. We can come to the understanding that day 1 was a
Sunday. We know from Exodus that God created everything in six 24 hour days.
For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and
rested on the seventh day- Exodus 20:11. God here wants Israel to rest on the
seventh day and he uses that argument based on, that he rested on the seventh
day after creating everything in six days.
Day 2- Expansion and separation of the Water- verses 6-8 (Monday)
On Day 2, God expanded the waters. Verse 6 says, then God said, Let there be
an expanse of the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the
waters. Day 2 is often difficult to comprehend because of the vocabulary. Day
2 being a Monday is the only day in the six days of creation where God does
not indicate that it is good.
Day 3- Formation of the dry lands, trees, and plants appear- verses 9-13 (Tuesday)
On Day 3, God formed the dry lands and created plants and trees. Verse 9 says,
then God said, Let the waters under the heavens be gathered into one place,
and let the dry land appear; and it was so. God gave us on day 3 the dry
land, the trees on the earth bearing fruit, the plants, and God saw it was
good. Day 3 being a Tuesday was blessed twice. Tuesday in the Jewish
vernacular is the day of double blessing.
Day 4- Creation of the Sun, moon and the stars- verses 14-19 (Wednesday)
On Day 4, God created the sun, moon, and the stars. God said, let there be
lights in the firmament of heaven to divide the day from the night then God
made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light
to rule the night.
Day 5- Creation of fish and birds- verses 20-23 (Thursday)
On Day 5, God created the sea creatures, and the birds. God said, Let the
waters abound with abundance of living creatures, and let the birds fly above
the earth across the face of the firmament of the heavens. God blessed them,
saying, Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let
birds multiply on the earth. God wants us to multiply and Satan wants
abortion.
Day 6- Creation of Man and land animals- verses 24-31 (Friday)
On Day 6, God created land creatures, man and woman. God said, Let us make
man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the
fish of the and sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all
of the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth. Notice

the plural of us when talking about making man, not in my image, but in our
image. Verses 26-27 also mention the word image three times, which echoes the
trinity. Verse 29 says that God has given us every plant for our consumption.
This does not mean we should be vegetarians and Genesis 9 covers this topic in
more detail.

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Genesis 1:1

Genesis 2

The 7th Day, God Rests, Creation of Man and Woman

On the seventh day God ended his work and he rested on the seventh day from
all of his work which he had done. Verse 7 says on how God created man. And
the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his
nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living man. The Lord God then
planted a garden in Eden, and there He put the man whom He had formed and He
made trees grow in the garden. A river went out of Eden and was parted into
four riverheads- Pishon, Gihon, Hiddekel, Euphrates. Then the Lord took the
man and put him in the Garden of Eden to tend and keep it. Verse 16 here is
next and is the critical verse: And the Lord God commanded the man, saying,
Of every tree in the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of knowledge
of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you will
surely die. Then God said, It is not good that man should be alone; I will
make him a helper comparable to him. And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to
fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the
flesh in its place. Then the rib which the Lord God had taken from man, He
made into a woman, and He brought her to the man. Verses 24-25 continues, that
therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife,
and they shall become one flesh. And they were both naked, the man and his
wife, and were not ashamed. God here presents the direction he expects mankind
to follow. First, Adam has one wife. Second Adam has a heterosexual
relationship with his wife Eve. Third, Adam is the head of the household and
there is not a partnership, Adam or the man is the head. 1 Corinthians says:
For man is not from woman, but woman from man. Nor was man created for the woman,
but woman for the man. - 1 Corinthians 11:8-9. There is a chain of command between
God, the man and the family that many in society including many Christians
dont understand. Ephesians 5 also speaks on the man being the head of the
household.
Gods perfect model is given to us in the Bible and we as
Christians should be following it.

And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his
nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.- Genesis 2:7

And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden you
may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat,
for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die. Genesis 2:16, 17

And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took
one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. Then the rib which the LORD God
had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man. And
Adam said: This is now bone of my bones And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called
Woman, Because she was taken out of Man. - Genesis 2:21-23

Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they
shall become one flesh. Genesis 2:24

Genesis 3

The Temptation and Fall of Man

Genesis 3 is not a parable, fable but this is intended by God himself to be

understood as real people with real issues. The serpent makes an appearance.
He was more cunning than any beast which God had made. The serpent asked the
woman if God said she shall not eat of every tree in the garden? The woman
responded to the serpent telling him that they may eat of every tree in the
garden, except for the tree in the midst of the garden that they should not
eat or touch because they would die. God never said anything about touching
the tree in the midst of the garden. She suddenly modifies what God said. The
serpent then attempts denies God by telling the woman by saying to her that
surely she will not die if she eats from the tree in the midst of the garden,
and if she were to eat from that tree she would be like God, knowing good and
evil and she will become wise. So because the woman saw the tree was pleasant
to the eyes and she thought it would make her wise, she ate took from the
fruit and ate from the tree. In order to disrupt things, first Satan creates
doubt, than creates denial. Satan is still creates doubt for us today from our
schools and even in our churches. Did God really say that? or We have a
separation of Church and State in our schools are two examples of what we see
today. From this incident, we have Gods Declaration of War where we are both
the pawns and the pride. The woman had a desire for wisdom and many people
stumble because of this knowledge and wisdom. Gaining wisdom is great, but a
pursuit for wisdom without God can lead into an arrogance that can be
disastrous. There are some people with a fancy degree after their name posing
as Christian experts that have no concept of Christ. The woman also gave the
fruits to her husband and he ate. Then the eyes of both of them were opened,
and they knew they were naked. So by eating the fruit, they now could see. The
man and woman then heard the sound of the Lord in the garden and then the Lord
called to Adam asking where he was? Adam replied that he heard his voice in
the garden and he was afraid because he was naked, so he hid himself. Then God
asked Adam how he knew he was naked and then he asked if he had not eaten from
the tree he told that he should not eat? God already knew the answer to the
question, so it wasnt that he was asking that they ate from the fruit, but
simply a way to gauge Adams reaction to his question. Then Adam said the
woman whom He gave to him, gave him the fruit and he ate. Adam puts the blame
on the woman here and he does not take responsibility for his decisions. We
will see later on that Abram puts the blame on Sarai later on in their sin due
to Sarais bad idea. Then the Lord asked the woman what she has she done? The
woman replied the serpent deceived me and I ate. Then the Lord turned to the
serpent and told him because he had done this, he was to be cursed. Verse 15
says that he will put enmity (feeling of hatred) between him and the woman. We
also get the strange title of the Messiah- the seed of the woman. Then the
Lord said to the woman that he would greatly multiply your sorrow and
conception and your desire shall be for your husband and he shall rule over
you. Then the Lord said to Adam because you heeded the voice of your wife, and
have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, that he would be cursed.
Then Adam named his wife Eve, because she was the mother of all living. The
God sent them out of the Garden. One of the tragedies of God is that when we
commit it, we take our eyes away from Him.
Genesis 4

Cain Murders Abel, The Family of Cain, A New Son

Adam and Eve had their first son Cain. Later, Eve had another son named Abel.
Both Cain and Abel brought their offering, but the Lord respected the younger
son Abels offering, but not Cains. Cain in return was then very angry and
the Lord asked him why he is so angry. Cain then killed Abel. Then the Lord
asked Cain where Abel was, and he said he didnt know. Cain then asked the

8 | Page

Lord, am I my brothers keeper? The Lord asked what Cain had done as He heard
the voice of Abels blood cries from the ground. According to Jesus in Luke
11, Abel is the first prophet- that the blood of all the prophets which was shed from
the foundation of the world may be required of this generation, from the blood of Abel to
the blood of Zechariah who perished between the altar and the temple. Luke 11:50:51.
Cain was letting his pride get in the way as he was upstaged by his younger
brother. The Lord told Cain he is now cursed from the earth and when he tilled
the ground, it shall no longer yield strength to you. Cain then said to the
Lord my punishment is greater than I can bear! Cain adds that I shall be a
fugitive and whoever finds me will kill me. Keep in mind when Cain says
whoever finds him will kill him is referencing one of his family members
whether it be brothers, sisters or nieces or nephews, grandkids, great
grandkids, etc. Adam and Eve started this family and only people alive are
their close relatives. Also Adam and Eve may be several hundred years old at
the time so the population could be thousands and maybe several thousand by
then. And in the next verse we learn that cities have already been created so
these are not just small populations. And the Lord said to Cain whomever kills
Cain will receive vengeance on that sevenfold. Cain did kill his brother and
took a long time to repent, however he eventually did repent and his offspring
are God fearing. Later Cain marries (since Adam and Eve were the first people
on Earth, he had married one of his sisters, which at the time was needed for
procreation) but we dont know her name, and she conceived Enoch. And Cain
built a city and named it after his son Enoch. We have a hint that because
its a city that the population is large at this point. Adam and Eve then bore
another son named Seth. Seth later had a son and named him Enosh.

Genesis 5 is the genealogy of Adam. There is a hidden

Christian faith hidden inside the genealogy of Genesis 5.

Now put the translation all together and it will read the following way. Man
(is) appointed mortal sorrow, (but), the Blessed God shall come down teaching
(that) his death shall bring the despairing rest. This is the summary of the
Christian gospel tucked away in the Torah.
Adam lived to be 930 years old and had Seth at 130 years of age. Seth lived to
be 912 years old and had Enoch at 105 years of age. All of these men had their
children when they were in they were anywhere from their sixties to well into
their hundreds. Jared was 162 when he had Enoch. Enoch was 65 years old when
he had Methuselah. For the next 300 years Enoch then walked with God. Enoch
was given a prophecy from Jude 14-15 that as long as his son, Methuselah is
alive, the judgment of the flood would be upheld. Enoch is essentially the
first prophet. Enoch was later raptured at the age of 365. Paul writes in
Hebrews: By faith Enoch was taken away so that he did not see death, and was not found,
because God had taken him; for before he was taken he had this testimony, that he
pleased God- Hebrews 11:5. Enoch walked with God that lasted 300 years and that

privilege extended to Enoch can also be extended to us. Methuselah had Lamech
when he was 178 years old, and died at 960 years old. Lamech lived 182 years
and had a son named Noah and he died at the age of 777. Noah had Shem, Ham and
Japheth when he was 500 years old. The flood came when Noah was 600 years old
which was the same year as Methuselah dies because Methuselahs life was a
prophecy of mercy and this is why his life is the longest life in the Bible.
Genesis 6

The Wickedness and Judgment of Man, Ark Prepared

Human population began to grow and in verse 2, the term, The sons of God is
used and they found the daughters of humans beautiful and they married them.
The sons of God are falling angels. Peter references these fallen angels in 2
Peter 2 referring back to Noahs days : For if God did not spare the angels who
sinned, but cast them down to hell and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be
reserved for judgment; and did not spare the ancient world, but saved Noah, one of eight
people, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood on the world of the ungodly 2
Peter 2:4-5. Peter's comments even establishes the time of the fall of these
angels to the days of the Flood of Noah. In verse 4, Moses speaks of the
Nephilim which are the hybrids of the humans and the fallen angels. God said
mans days shall be 120 years. The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was
great and that their every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil.
The Lord was sorry he made man on the earth and he grieved in his heart.
However Noah found grace in God and he said to him that the end of all times
have come before Me, for the earth is filled with violence. According to Gods
word, He tells us all how Noah, Daniel and Jobe are all righteous. The word of
the LORD came again to me, saying: Son of man, when a land sins against Me by
persistent unfaithfulness, I will stretch out My hand against it; I will cut off its supply of
bread, send famine on it, and cut off man and beast from it. Even if these three men, Noah,
Daniel, and Job, were in it, they would deliver only themselves by their righteousness, says
the Lord GOD. Ezekiel 14:12. The Lord told Noah to make himself an ark with
three decks because I myself am brining floodwaters to the earth to destroy
everything on earth, except for Noah, his wife and sons and their wives. Noah
was to bring two of every animal both male and female. A cubit is around 18
inches long. The length of the ark was 300 cubits, and its width was 50
cubits. Noahs Ark was larger than the Titanic or a football field (450 feet
long) and he spend 120 years making it. There was no rain in that day either.
Many commentators believe that everyone was on the ark for around 377 days- (5
months floating and 7 months on the mountain).
Genesis 7

The Great Flood

The Lord said to Noah to come into the ark along with your household because
you are righteous before Me. You shall take seven each of every clean animal,
a male and female; two each of the animals that are unclean, seven each of the
birds. In seven days, I will cause it to rain for 40 days and 40 nights and
will destroy from the face of the earth all living things I have made. Noah
was 600 years old when the floodwaters were on the earth. Noah, his wife, sons
and daughters and his sons wives, went into the ark and the animals followed
two by two, both male and female. And it came to pass after seven days the
waters of the flood were on the earth and it occurred in the second month and
seventeenth day of the month. The rain fell for 40 days and 40 nights and
everything that was left on earth was wiped out. After 40 days, the waters
lifted up the ark high above the earth and the mountains were covered. All the
flesh left on the earth died and only Noah and those that were with him on the
ark remained alive.

Genesis 8

Noahs Deliverance, God Covenant with Creation

God made a wind pass over the earth and the rain stopped and the waters from
beneath stopped and then the waters subsided. The fountains of the deep and
the windows of the heaven were also stopped, and the rain from heaven was
restrained. The waters continually receded from the earth. The Ark rested on
the 7th month and the 17th day of the month on the mountains of Ararat. So why
did the Holy Spirit mention this exact date and what are we to get out of it?
Every detail of the Bible was placed there by precise design, so this date was
given to us in Genesis for a reason. The Jews observe two calendars: the
original (Genesis); and the religious one (later from Moses day) that begins
on the 1st of Nisan which starts 7 months later. The Genesis calendar starts 7
months before the religious calendar. So in other words, the date given to us
in passage from Genesis 8:4 of the seventh month, is the month of Nisan on the
religious calendar. So according to Genesis 8:4, this seventh month would mean
the ark rested in the month of Nisan. The ark rested on the 17th day of Nisan
which is the exact date of Christs resurrection!! Noahs new beginning on the
planet earth is on the anniversary in advance of our new beginning of Jesus
Christ. This is just another example of the fingerprint of the Holy Spirit!
The mountains of Ararat is about 14,000 feet and it is on the border between
Armenia and Iran and Turkey. The waters decreased until the tenth month. In
the tenth month, the tops of the mountains were seen. Noah sent out a raven to
see if the land was dry, but he never came back. Ravens are unclean animals,
and they eat carcasses. Noah then sent out a dove to see if there was still
water on the earth and he came back. The dove had no place to rest so she came
back to the ark. In another seven days, Noah sent out the dove again and she
came back to him in the evening with an olive leaf in her mouth and Noah knew
the waters had receded from the earth. Noah sent the dove the third time in
another seven days and she did not return. On the second month and twentyseventh day of the month, the earth was dried out. They were on the ark for
377 days, or 1 year and 17 days (360 day years). So Noah and his family went
out and brought the animals out of the ark. Then Noah built an altar to the
Lord and offered burnt offerings on the altar and the Lord smelled the
soothing aroma. The Lord then said I will never again destroy every living
thing as I have done. The earth was different prior to and after the flood.
Scientists believe that the barometric pressure before the flood was twice at
what it is now. Without the high pressure that existed before the flood,
pterodactyls could not fly. The increased oxygenation explains the longer
lifetimes but the flood makes changes.
Genesis 9

Noah and His Sons

The earth changed dramatically post-flood and all of history as we know it is

post-flood. Nobody has any idea of the way of the world from Adam up to the
flood. The earth before the flood was quite different in many ways. The
thermal blanket that scientists believe that protected the earth from
radiation was gone. It was the end of a universal climate. They found these
huge mammoths in Alaska and Siberia that have tropical vegetation in their
stomachs that were suddenly frozen a couple of hundred degrees below zero.
There was coal in Antarctica which suggests tropical vegetation in ancient
times. There was also atmospheric pressure twice as high pre-flood versus
post-flood. God blessed Noah and his three sons (Shem, Japheth and Ham) and He
told them to multiply. Shem is the eldest son, Japheth is the middle, and Ham
is the youngest son. The fear of man shall be on every beast of the earth and
every beast shall be food for man. Noah and his descendants are not
vegetarians anymore and are encouraged to eat meat. Capital Punishment is
ordained in verse 6 where God says: Whoever sheds mans blood, by man his blood

11 | P a g e

shall be shed; - Genesis 9:6. God then makes a covenant with Noah never to destroy
the earth with the flood again. The rainbow shall be in the crowd and I will
look on it to remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living
creature of all flesh that is on the earth. Noahs youngest son, Ham, was his
least favored son. Ham had a son named Canaan. Noah, over 600 years old at
this time, drank of the wine and became drunk, and became uncovered in his
tent. Ham saw the nakedness of his father and he told his brothers. But Shem
and Japheth took a garment and covered the nakedness of Noah. Their faces were
turned away and did not see their fathers nakedness. Ham, on the other hand,
saw the nakedness of his father and either he or his son Canaan, most likely
engaged in a perverted sexual sin. Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his
younger son had done to him and he said, cursed be Canaan; a servant of
servants. Noah doesnt curse Ham, but curses his son Canaan. He also said that
Canaan (Hams son) be Shems servant. May God enlarge Japheth; and may Japheth
live in the tents of Shem, and may Canaan be his slave! The patriarchs would
come from Shems line, and the descendants of Ham and his son Canaan were the
ungodly people of the land. Noah lived for an additional 350 years after the
flood, and died at the age of 950 years.
Genesis 10

Nations Descended from Noah

Chapter 10 covers the genealogy of Noahs sons: Shem, Japheth and Ham. There
are 70 names covered in Genesis 10. Japheth begot many sons including Gomer
and Magog. Magog will be very important when we get to Ezekiel. Ham begot
Canaan who Noah said should be Shem and Japheths servant. Ham also begot
Cush, who produced Nimrod- the worlds first dictator. Nimrod would start his
kingdom in Babel (Babylon), and include Nineveh in Assyria. There is a
constant theme or juxtaposition throughout the Bible between the cities of
Jerusalem (Gods city) and Babylon (man or Satans city). Canaan begot Sidon
other children an afterward the families of the Canaanites were dispersed
including Sodom and Gomorrah. The patriarchs will come from Shems line.
Genesis 11

The Tower of Babel, Shems Descendants, Terahs Descendants

The whole earth had just one language and one speech. They wanted to build
themselves a city and a tower whose top is in the heavens; let us make a name
for ourselves and so we would not be scattered throughout the face of the
earth. It sounds good to want to get to heaven, but it is truly a form of
rebellion as it goes against Gods commandment. God told them to scatter and
spread around the earth and replenish the world, but the people of Babel
didnt listen to God, and were guilty like we all are of thinking our way is
better than Gods. Listening to our own wants and needs and setting our own
goals, over what God wants is something even Christians in society struggle
with. But the Lord came down to the city to see the city and tower the men had
built. The Lord went down there to confuse their language, that they may not
understand one anothers speech. So the Lord scattered them abroad over the
earth and they ceased from building the city. The city is called Babel because
there the Lord confused the language of all the earth; and from there the Lord
scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth. There is a pun involved
as Babel means to confuse, but also means tower to heaven. Babylon is founded
here in Genesis 11. In looking at Babylon, the city will have to rise to power
so it can be wiped out according to what Isaiah 13-14, Jeremiah 50- 51, and
Revelation 17-18. Shem lived 500 years and begot sons and daughters that
ultimately produced Abram. Abram took a wife by the name of Sarai, but she was
barren. Sarai being barren would be important for later on in Genesis 18.
Abram took his wife Sarai and his grandson Lot to the land of Canaan and dwelt
there.

Genesis 12

Promises to Abram, Abram in Egypt

The Lord had said to Abram to take his family and get out of your country to a
land I will show you. I will make you a great nation; I will bless you. I will
bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who curses you; and in you all
the families of the earth shall be blessed. These verses are is the reason
that America has been so blessed, because we originally were founded upon
Christian principles and that we support Israel. According to Steven in Acts
7, he tells us that Abram is in Mesopotamia before he would leave to go into
Haran and then into Egypt. Abram and Lot departed and Abram was 75 years old
when he departed from Haran. Then Abram took Sarai and his nephew Lot, and
their possessions from Haran and departed towards Canaan. The Canaanites were
in the land. Then the Lord appeared to Abram and said, to your descendants I
will give this land. And Abram built an altar to the Lord. There was famine
in the land and Abram went down to Egypt to dwell there. Later Abrams
grandson Jacob would be brought to Egypt because of another draught. When he
was close to entering Egypt Abram told his wife that because she is a woman of
beautiful countenance, that he will tell them Sarai was his sister because if
they believed that she was his wife, that they would kill him. As it turns
out, Abram was not lying as Sarai was his half-sister as they both had the
same father (Terah), but had a different mother. Sarai was born from Terahs
second wife. When Abram came into Egypt the Egyptians saw that Sarai was very
beautiful. They treated Abram very well for her sake. But the Lord plagued
Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abrams wife.
Pharaoh is a title in Egypt for the king. Pharaoh called to Abram asking him
what he had done and why he told him Sarai was his sister? Pharaoh said he was
interested in making Sarai his wife. Pharaoh then told Abram to take his wife
and go their way to leave Egypt.

I will make you a great nation; I will bless you and make your name great; and you
shall be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who curses
you; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed. Genesis 12:2-3

Genesis 13

Abram inherits Canaan

Abram, Sarai and Lot left Egypt to Canaan and went as far north as Bethel. The
Canaanites and Perizzites then dwelt in the land. There was strife between
Abrams and Lots herdsmen, but Abram said to Lot to please let no strife come
between you and I. Abram suggested that he and Lot separate and asked Lot if
he wanted to go left or right. Lot saw the land of Jordan that was wellwatered (before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah) like the garden of the
Lord so he went East and pitched his tent as far as Sodom. But the men of
Sodom were exceedingly wicked and sinful against the Lord. Abram dwelt in the
land of Canaan. The Lord said to Abram after Lot had separated from him to
lift your eyes now and look from the place where you are now that all of the
land which you see, I give to you and your descendants forever. Then Abram
built an altar for the Lord.

And the LORD said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him: Lift your eyes now
and look from the place where you arenorthward, southward, eastward, and
westward; for all the land which you see I give to you and your descendants forever.Genesis 13:14-15

Genesis 14

Lots Captivity and Rescue

The kings of Elam, Shinar, Ellasar, and Tidal were in a battle against the
kings of Sodom and Gomorrah. The kings of Sodom and Gomorrah were overrun and
they also took Lot. When Abram heard from one who escaped that Lot was taken,
he summoned up 318 trained servants who were born in his house, and went in
pursuit as far as Dan. He sent his servants in at night and brought back all
of the goods and Lot from the kings of Elam, Shinar, Ellasar. Then
Melchizedek, which is a title not a name, brought out bread and wine as he was
priest of the God Most High, and he blessed Abram. Melchizedek was the king of
Salem, which would eventually become Jerusalem. Abram gives Melchizedek
tithes. The king of Sodom was very thankful to Abram and offered him a reward
of all of the goods for himself. Abram said to the king of Sodom that, I have
raised my hand to the Lord, God Most High, the Possessor of Heaven, that I
will take nothing. This concept is critical to understand because Satan has
two good opportunities to make us stumble. The first opportunity to stumble is
after a victory like we just saw with Abram and the second is when the
pressure is on.
Genesis 15

Gods Covenant with Abram

The word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision saying do not be afraid Abram.
I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward. But Abram said to the Lord,
what will you give me, seeing I go childless? The Lord came to him saying, the
one who comes from your own body shall be your heir. Then He brought him
outside and said, look now toward heaven and count the stars if you are able
to number them. And He said to him, so shall your descendants be. And he
believed in the Lord, and He accounted it to him for righteousness. Abram and
Sarais big concern was that they were in their eighties and childless. God
however told them their descendants would be as many as the stars. This is the
first mention in the Bible of the condition of salvation- by faith. This truth
is repeated Romans 4, Galatians 3, and James 2. Righteousness is reckoned in
return for faith. Then He said to him, I am the Lord who brought you out of
the land of the Chaldeans, to give you this land to inherit. When a deep sleep
fell upon Abram, a great horror and darkness fell upon him. Then He said to
Abram, know certainly that your descendants will be strangers in the land that
is not theirs, and will serve them, and they will afflict them for 400 hundred
years. So here God is making promises to Abram that he will have children and
they will be reproduce and populate the land. On the same day, the Lord made a
covenant with Abram saying; to your descendants I have given this land, from
the river of Egypt to the river Euphrates. There are three major covenants in
the Bible. First is Gods covenant with Abram from Genesis 12 where God
blesses those who bless Israel and curse those who curse Israel- this is all
of us. The second covenant is one with the nation of Israel in which if they
served Him, they would prosper, and if they didnt they would be destroyed.
The third covenant is Gods covenant with David in which his bloodline would
produce the Messiah and He would reign over people forever.
Genesis 16

Sarai and Hagar

Sarai borne him no children and she had an Egyptian maid whose name was Hagar.
Sarai said to Abram that since the Lord has prevented me from having children,
to please go to my maid conceive and she bore Abrams child which would
produce Ishmael. Hagar (the maid) then despised the sight of Sarai. Sarai told

14 | P a g e

Abram that the Lord shall judge between you and I. Abram did what his wife
said and then did not accept responsibility for their actions and blamed his
wife. This is a parallel from earlier where Eve caused Adam to sin, and he
blamed his wife. Paul speaks of this scenario in Galatians 4:21-31 comparing
the births of Ishmael to Isaac. The angel of the Lord found Hagar and asked
where she was going. She said she was fleeing from her mistress, Sarai. The
angel of the Lord told her to return to her mistress (Sarai) and submit
yourself to her authority. The angel of the Lord said to her further that you
will bear a son named Ishmael, and because the Lord has special attention to
your affliction, he will be a wild donkey of a man and his hand will be
against everyone, and everyone will be against him. Hagar then bore Abram a
son; and Abram called him Ishmael. Abram was 86 years old when Hagar bore
Ishmael.
Genesis 17

Abraham and Covenant of Circumcision

Abram was 99 years old when the Lord appeared to him and said I am God
Almighty; I will establish a covenant between Me and you, and I will multiply
you exceedingly. Abram fell on his face and God talked with him saying you
will be the father of a multitude of nations and no longer shall your name be
called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham, for I have made you the father
of all nations. I will establish my covenant between Me and you and your
descendants. I will give to you and to your descendants all the land of
Canaan, for an everlasting possession and I will be their God. This is my
covenant to you and every male among you shall be circumcised. And every male
among you who is eight days old shall be circumcised throughout your
generations. Then God said to Abraham, you shall not call your wife Sarai, but
Sarah shall be her name. In Hebrew, the letter that was added to both
Abrahams and Sarahs name means the spirit of God. I will bless her and I
will give you a son by her and she shall be the mother of all nations. Then
Abraham fell on his face and laughed in his heart, will a child be born to a
man 100 years old, and will Sarah, who is 90 years old bear a child? But God
said, Sarah your wife will bear you a son from her, and you shall call his
name Isaac. I will also bless Ishmael. The Koran would have you believe the
covenant goes through Ishmael, which is contrary to scripture about the line
going through Isaac. Then Abraham took Ishmael his son and all servants in the
house and circumcised them. Abraham was 99 years old when he was circumcised
and Ishmael was 13. All the men of his household who were born in the house or
bought with money from a foreigner were circumcised.
Genesis 18

Birth of Isaac Promised

The Lord appeared to him while he was sitting at the tent door in the heat of
the day. When he lifted up his eyes there were three men were standing
opposite him and when he saw them, he ran to the tent door to meet them and
bowed himself to the earth. He said my Lord, if now I have found favor in your
sight, please do not pass your servant by. They said they would return to you
this time next year, and your wife Sarah will have a son. Sarah laughed (with
joy), and the Lord said to Abraham, why did Sarah laugh? Is anything too
difficult for the Lord? Then the men rose up from there, and looked down
towards Sodom. And the Lord said I will go down now, and see if they have not
done entirely according to its outcry, which has come to Me; and if not, I
will know. Then the men turned away turned away from there and went down to
Sodom while Abraham was standing before the Lord. God alludes to Abraham that
he is going to wipe out Sodom and Gomorrah and Abraham realizes Lot is in
Sodom and attempts to intercede on his behalf. Abraham asks God if he would
destroy the land if there are 50 righteous people there and God says no.
Abraham continues to ask God the same question but reduces his number of

15 | P a g e

righteous people and Gods response is the same. if he will destroy Sodom if
there are 45 righteous people and God says no. Abraham gets as low as asking
will God destroy Sodom if he can find 10 righteous and God says no. As soon as
he finished speaking to Abraham about not destroying Sodom if there were 10
righteous, the Lord departed and Abraham returned to his place.
Genesis 19

Sodom and Gomorrah Destroyed, Lot and His Daughters

Then two angels (men) this time came to Sodom in the evening as Lot was
sitting in the gate of Sodom. Scholars believe Sodom and Gomorrah are at the
south end of the Dead Sea. When Lot saw them, he rose to meet them and bowed
down with his face to the ground. The angels entered into Lots house and he
prepared a feast for them. The men of Sodom surrounded the house, both young
and old, and they called to Lot and asked him, where are the men who came to
you tonight? Bring them out to us that we may have sexual relations with them.
The sin of Sodom and Gomorrah was not homosexuality, but the condoning of it.
But Lot shut the door and said please my brothers, do not act wickedly. Lot
then offered his two daughters to the homosexuals. However they pressed hard
and came near to break the door. But the men (angels) reached their hands out
and brought Lot into the house with them and shut the door. They struck the
men who were at the doorway of the house with blindness. Then the two men
(angels) said to Lot, whom else do you have here? Lot went up to speak to his
future sons-in-law but he appeared to them to be jesting. The angels said we
are about to destroy this place, because their outcry has become so great
before the Lord that the Lord has sent us to destroy it.
When the morning
dawned, the angels urged Lot saying take your wife and your two daughters who
are here, or you will be swept away in the punishment of the city. When the
angels brought them outside, one said, escape for your life! Do not look
behind you; escape the mountains or you will be swept away. The angels are
dragging them out of town. Lots daughters fiances did not make it out of
Sodom. Then the Lord rained on Sodom and Gomorrah fire and brimstone. But his
wife looked back and she became a pillar of salt. Abraham rose early in the
morning and went to the place where he had stood before the Lord and he looked
down toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and saw the smoke of the land ascended like a
furnace. Lot stayed up in the mountains along with his two daughters. The
firstborn said the younger, our father is old and there is not a man on earth
to come into us after the manner of the earth. Let us make our father drink
wine, and let us like with him that we may preserve our family through our
father. They made their father drink wine that night, and the firstborn went
in and lay with the father; and he did not know when she lay down or when she
arose. On the following day, the firstborn said the younger, behold, I lay
last night with my father; let us make him drink wine tonight also; then you
go lie with him, that we may preserve our family through our father. So they
made their father drink wine and the younger arose and lay with him; and he
did not know when she lay down or when she arose. Thus both of the daughters
were with child by their father. The firstborn bore a son and called his name,
Moab; he is the father of the Moabites to this day. The younger also bore a
son, and called his name Ben-ammi; he is the father of the sons of Ammon to
this day.

Then the LORD rained brimstone and fire on Sodom and Gomorrah, from the LORD out
of the heavens. Genesis 19:24

Genesis 20

Abrahams Treachery

Abraham journeyed from the land of Negev and he sojourned in Gerar. Abraham
for the second time spoke of his wife Sarah as his sister, so Abimelech king

16 | P a g e

of Gerar sent and took Sarah. But God came to Abimelech in a dream of the
night and said to him that you are a dead man because of the woman whom you
have taken, for she is married. Now Abimelech had not come near her; and he
said Lord, will You slay a nation, even though blameless? Did he not say to me
that she is my sister? Then God said to him in the dream, yes I know that in
the integrity of your heart and I kept you sinning against Me. Therefore
restore the mans wife, for he is a prophet, and he will pray for you, and you
will live. Abimelech called in Abraham and asked him what have you done to us?
And how have I sinned against you, that you have brought on me and my kingdom
a great sin? Abraham said because I thought surely there is no fear of God in
this place, they will kill me because of my wife. Besides, she actually is my
sister, daughter of my father, but not the daughter or my mother, and she
became my wife. Abimelech took sheep and oxen and gave them to Abraham, and
restored Sarah to him. Abimelech said, behold my land is before you; settle
wherever you please. To Sarah he said, I have given your brother a thousand
pieces of silver, it is your vindication and before all men you are clear.
Abraham prayed to God, and God healed Abimelech and his wife and his maids, so
that they bore children.
Genesis 21

Isaac is Born, Sarah Turns against Hagar, Covenant with Abimelech

Then the Lord took note of Sarah as He had said and the Lord did for Sarah as
He promised. So Sarah conceived and bore a son to Abraham in his old age and
named him Isaac. Abraham was 100 years old, and Sarah was 90 when Isaac was
born and God made laughter for Sarah. Sarah saw the son of Hagar, Ishmael who
was about 16 at this time, was mocking the addition of Isaac to the family.
Therefore Sarah said to Abraham, drive out this maid and her son, for the son
of this maid shall not be an heir with my son Isaac. The spiritual warfare we
watch daily in the paper, of Islam, who call themselves the son of Ishmael, is
to attack the inheritance of Isaac. In one of the earliest books of the Bible,
do we see Ishmael, born of the flesh mock Isaac, and we see this same issue
today on much greater scale in Islam wanting to destroy the land promised to
the Jews from God. Sarah is upset over Ishmael mocking the birth of Isaac, and
this matter makes Sarah angry and a result wants Hagar and Ishmael out.
Abraham becomes greatly distressed over this conflict. But God said to
Abraham, do not be distressed because of the lad and your maid; whatever Sarah
tells you, listen to her, for through Isaac your descendants shall be named.
God here tells Abraham that Isaac is of the seed, not Ishmael. And of the son
of the maid, I will make a nation also, because he is your descendant. So
Abraham rose early in the morning and took bread and a skin of water and gave
them to Hagar, and gave her the boy and sent them away. Then she sat opposite
him and lifted up her voice and wept. God hearing the lad cry; and the angel
of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, what is the matter with
you Hagar? Do not fear for God has heard the voice of the lad where he is.
Ishmael is not an infant at this point, but is a teenager contrary to what
some Sunday-school books may present. Arise, for I will make a great nation of
him. Then God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water; and she gave the
lad a drink. God was with the lad, and he grew; and he lived in the wilderness
and became an archer. He lived in the wilderness of Paran, and his mother took
a wife for him from the land of Egypt. Abraham and Abimelech then made a
covenant and Abraham sojourned in the land of the Philistines for many days.
Genesis 22

Abraham offers Isaac

God tested Abraham and He said, take your son, your only son (God doesnt
recognize Ishmael), whom you love, Isaac, and go the land of Mount Moriah, and
offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I tell
you. This is the first time love appears in the Bible. So Abraham rose early

17 | P a g e

in the morning and saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him
and Isaac. On third day, Abraham saw the place from a distance. Abraham said
to his young men, stay here with the donkey, and I and the lad will go over
there; and we will worship and return to you. The two of them walked together.
Isaac asked Abraham, behold the fire and wood, but where is the lamb for the
burnt offering? Abraham said, God will provide for Himself the lamb for the
burnt offering, my son. On the same spot, 2000 years later, another Father
will offer up His Son. Then they came to the place God told them, and Abraham
built the alter, and bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of
the wood. Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.
But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, Abraham,
Abraham, do not stretch out your hand against the lad, and do nothing to him;
for now. I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your
only son, from Me. Then Abraham raised his eyes and looked, and behold, behind
him a ram caught in the thicket by his horns; and Abraham went and took the
ram and offered him up for a burnt offering in the place of his son. God told
Abraham that Isaac would have children, so Abraham knew this was Gods
problems, not his problem. Then the angel of the Lord called to Abraham a
second time from heaven and said, by myself I have sworn, declares the Lord,
because you have done this thing and not withheld your son, your only son,
indeed I will greatly bless you, and I will multiply your seed as the stars of
the heavens. So Abraham returned to his young men, and they arose and went
together to Beersheba.
Genesis 23

Death and Burial of Sarah

Abrahams wife Sarah lived 123 years before she died. Sarah died in the land
of Canaan and Abraham went to mourn for Sarah. Abraham rose and spoke saying
Im a stranger and sojourner among you, give me a burial site among you that I
may bury my dead out of my sight. Abraham buried Sarah in Canaan. The last
time Isaac is mentioned is just as he was about to be sacrificed. Sarah is the
only woman whose aged, death and burial are covered in the scripture.
Genesis 24

A Bride for Isaac, Isaac Marries Rebekah

Abraham said to his servant that you shall not take a wife for my son Isaac,
from the daughters of the Canaanites, among who I live, but you will go to my
country and my relatives, and take a wife for him. Abrahams servant and his
guards went to Mesopotamia. The servant prayed saying, O Lord, please grant me
success today, and show loving kindness to my master Abraham. Behold I am
standing by the spring water, and the daughters of the men of the city are
coming out to draw water. Rebekah who is a relative of Abraham came out with a
jar on her shoulder. Then the servant ran to meet her and asked if he could
drink from her jar. Then Rebekah gets her parents permission to marry Isaac.
Rebekah agrees to leave to marry Isaac and leaves with the servant to head
back to Canaan. Rebekah sees Isaac and covers her face, and Isaac will not see
her face until after the ceremony. Isaac then marries Rebekah in his mothers
tent.
Genesis 25

Abrahams Death, Isaacs Sons

Abraham took another wife, whose name was Keturah and she bore 6 sons. Abraham
however gave everything to Isaac. Abraham lived 175 years old before dying.
His sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him next to Sarah in Canaan. Ishmael later
died at 137 years of age. Isaac was 40 when he married Rebekah. Isaac prayed
to the Lord on behalf of his wife because Rebekah, like Sarah, was barren and

18 | P a g e

He answered. Rebekah also prayed to the Lord about being barren, and the Lord
answered her prayer as there were twins in her womb. The first came forth and
he was named Esau and afterwards Jacob was born. According to verse 23, the
older would serve the younger, so Esau would serve Jacob. Normally the younger
serves the older, unless otherwise stated like here. Knowing this fact is
critical in understanding the conflict that was about to occur between the
brothers. Isaac was 60 years old when the boys were born. When the boys grew
up, Esau became a skillful hunter, a mans man, if you will. Jacob was a
peaceful man and was an indoor guy. Isaac favored Esau because he had a taste
for the game, but Rebekah favored Jacob. Esau then sold his birthright to
Jacob for some lentil stew.

The LORD said to her, Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within
you will be separated; one people will be stronger than the other, and the older will
serve the younger. -Genesis 25:23

Genesis 26

Isaac Settles in Gerar, Quarrel over the Wells, Covenant with Abimelech

Now there was a famine in the land, besides the previous famine that occurred
in the days of Abraham, so Isaac went to Gerar, a midway point between Canaan
and Egypt. The Lord appeared to Isaac and said, do not go down to Egypt; stay
in the land of which I shall tell you. Sojourn in this land and I will be with
you and bless you, and I will multiply your descendants, because Abraham
obeyed Me and kept My commandments. So Isaac lived in Gerar. When the men of
the place asked about his wife, he said she is my sister for he was afraid to
say my wife because the men of the place might kill me on account of Rebekah,
because she is beautiful. Abraham deceived another Abimelech previously, and
now Isaac is doing the same. Abimelech saw that Isaac was caressing Rebekah
and then he called Isaac and said, behold, certainly she is your wife! Isaac
explained himself that he was afraid to tell others she was his wife.
Abimelech told the people he who touches this man or his wife shall surely be
put to death. God blessed Isaac and he became very rich and the Philistines
envied him. Abimelech then said to Isaac, go away from us, for you are too
powerful. Isaac departed and camped in the valley of Gerar and settled there.
The Philistines covered the wells, and Isaac dug again wells of water and they
quarreled over the wells. Isaac then went to Beersheba and the Lord appeared
to him and said I will bless you and multiply your descendants. Then Abimelech
came from Gerar and Isaac questioned why he came back since you hate me and
you sent me away? Abimelech said we see plainly the Lord has been with you, so
let there be a covenant between us, that you will do us no harm, just as we
have not touched or done anything but good to you. They shared in a feast and
Abimelech departed in peace.
Genesis 27

Jacobs Deception, The Stolen Blessing

When Isaac was old and his eyes were too dim to see, he called his older son
Esau and told him to go out to the field and hunt for game and bring me a
savory dish, so that my soul may bless you before I die. Isaac is nearly blind
at this point in his life. Rebekah was listening while Isaac spoke to his son
Esau, and Rebekah said to her son Jacob, I heard your father speak to your
brother Esau saying, he was going to give him the blessing. This is one of
these cases where Rebekah is trying to help God, but God doesnt need our help
and will do it his way. She knew the destiny for Jacob according to Genesis
25:23 to have the blessing, but she gets involved and maneuvers to what she
wants. Rebekah tells Easu to go now and bring me two choice young goats so
that I may prepare a savory dish for you father, such as he loves. Then you
shall bring it to your father, so that he may eat, so that he may bless you

before his death. Jacob answered, but my brother is a hairy man and I am a
smooth man. But his mother said to him, obey my voice, and go, get them for
me. Rebekah took the best garments of Esau and put them on Jacob. She also
put the skin of young goats on his hands and smooth parts of his neck to make
him feel hairy like Esau. She cooked up the savory food and gave it to Jacob.
Then he came to see his father and Jacob said I am your first born and I have
done as you told me. Get up, please, and sit and eat of my game, that you may
bless me. Isaac said to his son, how is that you have it so quickly? And Jacob
said because the Lord your God caused it to happen to me. Then Isaac said to
Jacob, please come close that I may feel you, may son, whether you are really
my son Esau or not. Jacob came to closer to Isaac, and he felt him and said,
the voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau. And he
said, are you really my son Esau? And Jacob said, I am. Isaac ate the food and
drank wine. Then Isaac blessed him. As soon as Isaac had finished blessing
Jacob, Esau came in from his hunting. Isaac said, who are you? And he said, I
am your son, your firstborn, Esau. Then Isaac trembled violently and said, who
was he then that hunted game and brought it to me, and ate all of it and
blessed him? When Esau heard the words of his father, he cried out with an
exceedingly great and bitter cry and said bless me also my father! And he said
your brother took away your blessing. Isaac said that I have made him your
master. So Esau bore a grudge against Jacob because of the blessing and said
to himself that I will kill my brother Jacob. When Rebekah heard of these
words, she told Jacob to flee to stay with my brother Laban for a few days
until your brothers anger subsides. Rebekah then said to Isaac that she tired
of the daughters of Heth; Rebekah has had it with her daughters-in-law
(Ishmael, Esau) and wants Jacob to find a non-Hittite woman. All of the
participants were at fault. Isaac was trying to thwart Gods plan by blessing
Esau from Genesis 25:23. Esau broke the oath that he made with Jacob when he
passed on the birthright. Rebekah and Jacob tried to achieve Gods plan by
deception. Rebekah would never see Jacob again. Jacob would not destroy the
family, but parental preference did. There are lessons here- parental
favoritism can wreck any family.
Genesis 28

Jacob is Sent Away, Jacobs Dream

Isaac called Jacob and blessed him and said to him, you shall not take a wife
from the daughters of Canaan. He told Jacob to go Paddan-aram and take
yourself a wife from the daughters of Laban, Rebekahs brother. Isaac does not
want Jacob to take a wife from someone outside his lineage as Esau did. Jacob
prayed said that may God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and multiply
you. Then Isaac sent Jacob away. Esau saw that Isaac blessed Jacob and sent
him away to find a non-Canaanite wife. Esau saw the daughters of Canaan
displeased his father, and married Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael, Abrahams
son. Then Jacob departed from Beersheba and went toward Haran to find
Rebekahs brother Laban. Jacob had a dream and a ladder was set on the earth
with its top reaching to heaven. The Lord said, I am the Lord, the God of your
father Abram and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie, I will give to
your descendants and in you and in your descendants shall all the families of
the earth be blessed. From this episode we get the term Jacobs ladder. Then
Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, surely the Lord is in the place, and I
did not know it. He said, how awesome is this place! This is none other than
the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven. He called the name of that
place Bethel. Then Jacob made a vow saying, if God will be with me and will
keep me on this journey and I return to my fathers house in safety, then the
Lord will be my God and that of all of that You give me I will surely give a
tenth to You.

Genesis 29

Jacob meets Rachel, Labans Treachery

Then Jacob went on his journey and came to the land known as the sons of the
east. He asked some sheepherders if they knew Laban the son of Nahor? They
pointed out Rachel, the daughter of Laban. When Jacob saw Rachel he was very
impressed. He kissed her and then wept. He told her that he was a relative of
her father and that he was Rebekahs son and she ran and told her father.
When Laban heard the news of Jacob sisters son, he ran to embrace him. Laban
had two daughters, Leah and Rachel. Leah was older and her eyes were weak, but
Rachel was beautiful of form and face. Jacob said to Laban that I will serve
you for seven years for your daughter Rachel. Laban said it is better I give
her to you than to give her to another man; stay with me. So Jacob served
seven years and he said to Laban, give me my wife, for my time is complete.
Laban gathered the men and made a feast and brought Leah to him, and Jacob
went in to her. So when it came morning it was Leah! And he said to Laban,
what is this you have done to me? Was it not for Rachel that I served with
you? Why then have you deceived me? But Laban said, it is not the practice in
our place to marry off the younger before the firstborn. Complete the week of
this one, and we will give you the other also service which you will serve
with me for another seven years. Jacob completed the seven year period, and he
gave him his daughter Rachel as his wife. He loved Rachel more than Leah and
the Lord saw that Leah was unloved, and He opened up her womb, but Rachel was
barren. Leah conceived four sons- Reuben, Simeon, Levi and Judah, and then she
stopped bearing. She would later on have Zebulun, and Issachar.
Genesis 30

The Sons of Jacob, Jacob Prospers

Now jealous when Rachel saw that she bore Jacob no children, she became
jealous of her sister; and she said to Jacob, give me children, or else I will
die. Then Jacobs anger burned against Rachel and he said, am I in the place
of God, who has withheld from you the fruit of the womb? She said gave her my
maid Bilhah as a wife and Jacob went into her. Bilhah conceived a bore Jacob a
son and named him Dan. She conceived again, and bore Jacob another son and
named him Naphtali. When Leah saw she stopped bearing, she took her maid
Zilpah and her to Jacob and she bore him another son; and she named him Gad.
Zilphah bore Jacob a second son named Asher. In the days of the wheat harvest,
Reuben went and found mandrakes in the field and brought them to her mother
Leah. Then Rachel said to Leah, please give me some of your sons mandrakes.
Leah responded back saying is it a small matter for you to take my husband?
And you would take my sons mandrakes also? So Rachel said, he may lie with
you tonight in return for your sons mandrakes. When Jacob came home, Leah
said, you must come in to me, for I have surely hired you with my sons
mandrakes. So he lay with her that night. God gave heed to Leah and she bore a
fifth and sixth son, named Issachar and Zebulun, and a daughter named Dinah.
God remembered Rachel and she bore a son named Joseph. Jacob was beginning to
prosper and went to Laban asking him to send me away, that I may go to my own
place. But Laban resisted asking Jacob to stay and he asked him to name his
own wages. Jacob replied that for you had little before I came and it has
increased to a multitude and the Lord has blessed you wherever I turned. Laban
said, good, let it be according to your word. So he removed the striped and
spotted female goats.

Genesis 31

Jacob serves secretly for Canaan, Covenant of Mizpah

Jacob heard Labans sons saying derogatory things about Jacob, and he had
gained all of this wealth from his father. Jacob also noticed an unfriendly
attitude coming from Laban, and had another dream where the Lord told him to
return to the land of your father and relatives, and I will be with you. So
Jacob sent and called Rachel and Leah and told them they were going back to
the land of my birth. Then Jacob arose and put his children and wives on
camels back to the land of Canaan. Jacob deceived Laban by not telling him
that he was fleeing. When Laban found out Jacob fled, he pursued him. But
Laban dreamed that God warned him saying, be careful that you do not speak to
Jacob either good or bad. When Laban caught up with Jacob, he confronted him
asking him, what have you done by deceiving me and carrying away my daughters
like captives of the sword? Jacob responded, because I was afraid, for I
thought that you would take your daughters from me by force. Rachel had also
stolen some idols that were not only religious significance, but had evidence
of property ownership. Jacob wasnt aware that Rachel stole these items. Laban
searched for them but he couldnt find them. Jacob and Laban made a covenant
with each other, and then Laban kissed his daughters and sons and went back
home.
Genesis 32

Jacobs fear of Esau, Jacob Wrestles

As Jacob was on his way, the angels of God met him. Jacob said when he saw
them said, this is Gods camp. Then Jacob sent messengers before him to his
brother Esau. He also commanded them saying, thus says your servant Jacob, I
have sojourned with Laban, and stayed until now. I have donkeys, oxen, and
flocks of male and female servants and I have sent to tell my Lord, that I may
find favor in your sight. The messengers returned to Jacob saying we came to
your brother Esau, and furthermore he is coming to meet you, and four hundred
men are with him. Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed and prayed to
God saying, from the hand of Esau, I hear him and You said I would surely
prosper. Jacob sent up ahead goats, camels, colts, bulls, donkeys as gifts to
Esau and to let Esau know he is behind them. Then Jacob was alone and a man
wrestled with him until daybreak. When the adversary saw he was not going to
prevail against Jacob, he touched Jacobs thigh and his socket became
dislocated. As dawn was breaking, Jacobs adversary said let me go, and
despite having a dislocated socket, Jacob said I would not let you go until
you bless me. He told Jacob that his name shall no longer be Jacob but Israel;
for you have striven with God and with men and have prevailed. Then Jacob
asked him his name, and the adversary asks why Jacob ask his name? Jacob then
says I have seen God to my face. This adversary may have been a reincarnate
version of Jesus Christ.
Genesis 33

Jacob meets Esau, Jacob settles in Shechum

Then Jacob lifted his eyes and looked and Esau and four-hundred men were
coming. So Jacob divided the children among Leah, Rachel and the two maids. He
put the maids and the children in front, Leah and her children next, and
Rachel and Joseph last. But he passed on ahead of them and bowed to the ground
seven times until he came near his brother. Then Esau ran to meet him and
embraced him, and fell on his neck and kissed him and they wept. Esau asked
who those with you are, and Jacob replied the children whom God has graciously
given your servant. Everyone bowed down to Esau. Jacob asked that Esau accept
these gifts, but Esau said he had plenty. However this was a covenant of
friendship that is not in our culture, and Esau ultimately accepts the gift.

22 | P a g e

Then Esau said, lets take a journey and go. Jacob here however understands
that although all is forgiven, it is better not to move together at the moment
and they go their separate ways until later. Jacob then settle sin the city of
Shechem which is in the land of Canaan.
Genesis 34

The Treachery of Jacobs Sons

Remember Jacob was supposed to head back to Bethel, not stop in Shechum.
Dinah, the daughter of Jacob and Leah went out to visit the daughters of the
land. When Shechem, the prince of the city, saw her, he took her, and raped
her. He was deeply attracted to Dinah and he loved the girl and spoke tenderly
to her. So Shechem said to his father Hamor saying, get me this young girl for
a wife. Now Jacob heard that he defiled Dinah; but his sons were with his
livestock in the field, so Jacob kept silent until they came in. When Jacobs
sons heard the news, they were grieved and very angry. But Hamor spoke with
them saying, the soul of my son Shechem longs for your daughter; please give
her to him in marriage. But Jacobs sons answered him in deceit because he had
defiled Dinah. They said to him, we cannot do this thing to give our sister to
one who is uncircumcised, for that would be a disgrace to us. Every male in
the city them became circumcised. On the third day when the men will still
soar, when they were in pain, two of Dinahs brothers, Simeon and Levi, each
took his sword and killed every male in the city including Hamor and Shechem.
Jacobs sons looted the city. Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, you have
brought trouble on me by making me odious among the inhabitants of the land,
among the Canaanites and Perizzites; and my men being few in number will be
attacked and destroyed. But they said, should they treat our sister as a
harlot?
Genesis 35

Jacob moves to Bethel

The God said to Jacob, arise and go up to Bethel and live there. So Jacob said
to his household to put away the foreign gods, purify yourselves and arise and
go to Bethel. Its not enough to worship God, but we may have things that have
no place in our lives and homes and we might take that to heart. As they
journeyed, there was a great terror upon the cities, but it did not pursue the
sons of Jacob. Then God appeared to Jacob when they arrived in Bethel and
said, you name is Jacob but you shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel
should be your name. When they journeyed from Bethel to Ephrath, Rachel began
to give birth and she suffered severe labor. She gave birth to Benjamin, but
she died after doing so. Then Israel journeyed and pitched a tent beyond the
Tower of Edom and while doing so, Reuben laid with Bilhah his fathers
concubine, and Israel heard of it. This causes Reuben to lose his birthright.
Then at the age of 180 Isaac died and his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.

The land which I gave Abraham and Isaac I give to you; and to your descendants
after you I give this land.- Genesis 35:12

Josephs Dream of Greatness, Joseph is sold by his Brothers

Jacob lived in the land of Canaan. Jacob favored Joseph more than his other
sons because he was the son of his true love Rachel; and he made him a
varicolored tunic. Josephs brothers saw that their father loved Joseph more
than all his brothers; and they hated him. Joseph told his brothers a dream
that detailed that he would rule his brothers and they hated him even more. He
told them of a second dream where his entire family, including Jacob and
Rachel would bow down to him? Then his brothers went to pasture their fathers
flock in Shechem. Jacob sent Joseph to check on the welfare of his brothers.
When they saw him at a distance they plotted against him to put him to death.
But Reuben heard this and said let us not take his life and said further shed
no blood. Throw him into this pit that is in the wilderness, but do not lay
hands on him. When Joseph reached his brothers, they stripped Joseph of his
varicolored tunic that was on him, and they took him and threw him into the
pit. Judah said to his brothers, what profit is it for us to kill our brother
and cover up his blood? Come and let us sell him to the Ishmaelites and not
lay our hands him, for he is our brother, our own flesh. They sold him for 20
shekels of silver and he was brought into Egypt. They took Josephs tunic and
slaughtered a male goat and dipped the tunic in blood and brought it to their
father. They asked him to examine it and see whether it was your sons tunic
or not. When Jacob examined it, he said it was my sons tunic. A wild beast
has devoured him; Joseph has surely been torn to pieces! So Jacob tore his
clothes and mourned his son for many days. Meanwhile, the Midianites sold him
in Egypt to Potiphar, Pharaohs officer, the captain of the bodyguard.
Genesis 38

Judah and Tamar

Judah departed from his brothers and slept and married with a Canaanite woman.
She conceived a son named Er. Later when years passed, Er took a wife named
Tamar. She gave birth to three sons. The first two sons were wicked in the
Lords sight, so He put them to death. Tamar was one of Judahs daughters-inlaw who was the widow of Judahs first son. Judah saw a woman wearing a veil
who he assumed was a prostitute. She was wearing a veil and he didnt know who
she was, but she slept with her and she became pregnant. Unbeknownst to Judah
the woman in the veil was his daughter-in-law Tamar. Months later Judah hears
that Tamar is a prostitute and wants her burned to death. When Judah examined
her, he recognized his signet rings, cords and staff and now understands that
he slept with Tamar and says that said she is more righteous than I. Tamar had
twins- Perez and Zerah. The first born unless identified otherwise like in
Esau/Jacob is a title of stature. Despite Judahs incestuous relationship with
Tamar, the Messianic line continues through Tamar through to and eventually to
David and Jesus.
Genesis 39

Josephs Success in Egypt, Joseph Imprisoned

Joseph had been taken down to Egypt; and Potiphar bought him from the
Ishmaelites who had brought him there. The Lord was with Joseph, so he became
a successful man. His master saw the Lord was with him and how the Lord caused
all that he did to prosper in hand. So Joseph found favor in his sight and
became his personal servant; and made him overseer over his house. The Lord
blessed the house on account of Joseph. Potiphar left everything he owned in
Josephs charge. However Potiphars looked with desire at Joseph, and she
said, lie with me. But he refused and said how could I do this great evil and
sin against God? As she spoke to Joseph day after day, he did not listen to
her requests to lie beside her. Then one day none of the men were in the house

24 | P a g e

and she caught him by his garment, saying lie with me! And he left his garment
in her hand and fled outside. When she saw that he had left his garment in her
hand, she said he came in to lie with me and I screamed. So she left the
garment until his master came home. She said this Hebrew slave came into me to
make a sport of me and as I raised my voice and screamed, he left his garment
beside me and fled outside. Josephs master put him in jail, but the Lord was
with Joseph and he gave him favor in the sight of the jailer. The chief jailer
did not supervise anything under Josephs charge because the Lord was with
him, and the Lord made him prosper.
Genesis 40

Joseph Interprets the Dream

Then it came about the cupbearer and the baker for the King of Egypt offended
the King. Pharaoh was furious with his two officials and sent them to jail.
One of the cupbearers job descriptions was to taste the kings food to make
sure it wasnt poisoned; Nehemiah was also a cupbearer. The captain of the
bodyguard put Joseph in charge and he took care of them as they were in
confinement for some time. Then the cupbearer and the baker each had dreams
that they couldnt figure out that made them sad. Joseph said interpretations
of dreams belong to God, and asked to hear about them. The chief cupbearer
told Joseph his dream and said, in my dream there was a vine in front of me;
and on the vine were three branches. As it was budding, its blossoms came out,
and its clusters produced ripe grapes. Now Pharaohs cup was in my hand; so I
took the grapes and squeezed them into Pharaohs cup, and I put the cup into
Pharaohs hand. Then Joseph interpreted the dream. He said the three branches
are three days; within three more days Pharaoh will lift up your head and
restore you to your office; and you will put Pharaohs cup into his hand,
according to your former custom when you were his cupbearer. Only keep me in
mind when it goes well for you, and please do me a kindness by mentioning me
to Pharaoh and get me out of this house. When the chief baker saw that he had
interpreted favorably, he asked Joseph to interpret his dream. In this dream,
there were three baskets of white bread on my head; and in the top basket
there were some of all sorts of baked food for Pharaoh, and the birds were
eating them out of the basket on my head. Joseph said the three baskets are
three days; and within three days Pharaoh will lift your head up from you and
will hang you on a tree, and the birds will eat your flesh from you. Thus it
came about the third day, which was Pharaohs birthday that he made a feast
for all of his servants; and he lifted up the head of the chief cupbearer and
head of the chief baker among his servants. He restored the chief cupbearer
to his office, and he hung the chief baker, just as Joseph had interpreted to
them. This was an Egyptian type of capital punishment for that day. Yet the
cupbearer did not remember Joseph or his interpretation, so he rotted in
prison.
Genesis 41

Pharaohs Dream, Joseph is made Ruler of Egypt, The Sons of Joseph

At the end of two years since the baker hanging, Pharaoh had a dream, and
behold, he was standing by the Nile. From the Nile came up seven cows, sleek
and fat, and they grazed on the marsh. Then behold seven ugly cows stood by
the sleek and fat cows. The ugly cows ate up the seven and fat cows and then
Pharaoh awoke. He fell asleep and dreamed a second time that seven ears of
corn, plump and good came up on a single stalk. Then behold, seven thin and
scorched ears by the east wind, sprouted up after them. The thin ears
swallowed up the plump and full ears and then Pharaoh awoke from his dream.
None of the magicians could interpret the dream. The chief cupbearer told
Pharaoh of Joseph correctly interpreting dreams when they were in the dungeon,
including that the chief baker would be hung. Pharaoh called for Joseph and
Joseph listened to Pharaohs dream. Joseph like Daniel told the king that he

25 | P a g e

cant interpret dreams, but God can. Joseph told Pharaoh the dreams were one
in the same. The seven sleek and fat cows and seven ears of plump corn
represent seven years of great abundance. The seven ugly cows and seven thin
and scorched ears represent seven years of famine. Joseph explained Egypt
would have seven years of prosperity followed by seven years of famine.
Pharaoh put Joseph in charge of the land, and Joseph stored up grain for the
period to go into reserve. One of the lessons here is that wise planning ahead
is a basic principle of practical living, and something we need to practice in
our own lives. Pharaoh said to Joseph, since God has informed you of all this,
there is no one so discerning and wise as you are and I have set you over all
the land of Egypt. Pharaoh then placed a gold necklace around Josephs neck.
Then Pharaoh gave him Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera priest of On, as his
wife. Joseph was 30 years old when he stood before Pharaoh. Before the famine
came to Egypt, two sons were born to Joseph- Manasseh and Ephraim. After the
seven years of prosperity, seven years of famine set in, just as Joseph said.
There was famine in all of the lands, but in the land of Egypt there was
bread. When the land of Egypt was famished, the people cried out to Pharaoh
for bread; and Pharaoh said to the Egyptians, go to Joseph. The people of all
the earth came to Egypt to buy grain from Joseph, because the famine was
severe in all the earth.
Genesis 42

Josephs Brothers Sent to Egypt, Simeon is Held Hostage

Jacob saw there was grain in Egypt and requested his sons make another trip to
Egypt. Ten brothers of Joseph except for the youngest, Benjamin, went down to
Egypt buy grain as famine was in Canaan as well. Joseph was the ruler of Egypt
and he was the one who sold to all the people. When Josephs brothers arrived,
Joseph recognized them, but they did not recognize him as, he disguised
himself. Josephs brothers bowed down to him when they came into his presence.
Joseph asked them where they were from and accused them of being spies. They
denied it and said they come from Canaan to only buy food. Joseph insisted
they were spies and his brothers said that, your servants are twelve brothers
in all, the sons of one man in the Canaan and the youngest is with our father
today, and one is no longer alive. Joseph said they will be tested to see if
they speak the truth. He put them all in prison for three days, and Joseph
said on the third day that I fear God and if you are honest men, let one of
your brothers be confined to prison, but for the rest of you, go and carry
grain for your households. Bring your youngest brother back to me so your
words may be verified. The brothers spoke to one another how they were guilty
of what they did to their brother Joseph. Joseph turned away from them and
wept but when he returned to them, he took Simeon as a hostage. Simeon was
Jacobs second son, and tradition holds he was the cruelest of the brothers.
The rest of the brothers loaded their donkeys with grain and departed back to
Canaan. When they opened their sacks, all of the money was still there. When
they came back to Jacob, they explained what had happened. Jacob was not happy
that Joseph was thought to be dead, Simeon was a hostage and questioned the
boys attempting to take Benjamin. Then Jacob said, my son shall not go down
with you. So Jacob told the boys that Benjamin would not be going to Egypt.
Genesis 43

The Return to Egypt, Joseph Sees Benjamin

The famine in Canaan was severe and they had just about run out of food and
needed to make a second trip to Egypt. Jacob told the boys to go back and buy
them some more food. Jacob did not want Benjamin to make the trip. Judah said
to his father, send the lad with me and you may hold me personally responsible
for him. If I do not bring him back, then let me bear the blame before you
forever. Judah was the brother in Chapter 37 that negotiated to sell Joseph,
and now he is negotiating with the father to allow Benjamin to come to Egypt

26 | P a g e

with them. Then Jacob said to them, if it must be so, take some of the best
products of the land in your bags, take double the money, take back the money
that was returned in your sacks; perhaps it was a mistake. And may God
almighty grant you compassion in the sight of the man, so that he will release
to you, your other brother and Benjamin. When Joseph sees Benjamin, he told
his steward to bring the men into the house; for the men are to dine with me
at noon. The men were afraid, because they were brought into Josephs house.
The brothers told Joseph they brought down other money and didnt know who put
our money back in our sacks. Joseph said, be at ease and do not be afraid.
Then Joseph brought Simeon out to them. Joseph asked their brothers, is your
father still alive and they said our father is well and they bowed down in
homage. As he lifted his eyes and saw his younger brother Benjamin, his
mothers son, he asked is this the younger brother of whom you spoke of, and
may God be gracious to you, my son.
Joseph went out the room to weep and
returned after he gathered himself. The brothers were seated in the order of
their ages from the firstborn to the youngest; and they looked at each other
in astonishment. Did the brothers have a clue at this point how did this
stranger know them well enough to put them in the proper family order? The
brothers feasted and drank freely with him, with Benjamins portion five times
the size of any of theirs.
Genesis 44

The Brothers are Brought Back

Joseph is about to setup the brothers up here. Joseph commanded his servants
to fill the mens sack with food, and put each mans money in the mouth of the
sack and put my silver cup in the sack of the youngest. As soon as it was
daylight, the men were sent away with their donkeys. As the brothers had just
gone outside the city, Joseph told his steward to follow the men and ask them
why have you repaid good for evil? The steward suggested that one of the
brothers stole Pharaohs cup. The brothers denied stealing the cup. The
steward then says whoever is found carrying the cup will be my slave, and the
rest of you shall be innocent. He searched their bags beginning with the
oldest and the cup was found in Benjamins sack. They all returned back to the
city. Joseph said to them, what is this deed you have done? Joseph said
Benjamin will be his slave and the rest are free to go. Judah pleaded with
Joseph over his decision. The Judah here is a long way from the immature Judah
of thirteen years ago. Judah continues to plead his case to let Benjamin to
return home.
Genesis 45

Joseph Deals Kindly with His Brother

Then Joseph could not control himself and he cried and have everyone go out
from me. He wept so loudly that the Egyptians heard him, and the household of
Pharaoh heard it. Then Joseph said to his brothers, I am Joseph! Is my father
still alive? But his brothers could not answer him, for they were dismayed at
his presence. Joseph said to his brothers, please come closer to me and said
do not be grieved or angry with yourselves because you sold me here, for God
sent me before you to preserve our life. The famine has been in the land for
two years, and there are still another five years left of famine. God has made
me lord of all Egypt. You must tell my father of all my splendor in Egypt; and
you must hurry and bring my father down here. Then he fell on Benjamins neck
and wept and Benjamin wept on his neck. When Pharaoh heard the news, it
pleased him. Pharaoh told Joseph to go back to the land of Canaan and bring
your father and your household back here to Egypt and you will eat the fat of
the land. To each of the brothers he gave them new garments, but to Benjamin,
he gave three hundred pieces of silver. Joseph then sent his brothers back to
Canaan to bring Jacob back. When the brothers told Jacob that Joseph is still
alive, Jacob did not believe them. But when they told him the words Joseph had

spoken and the wagons that Joseph had sent to carry him, the spirit of Jacob
was revived.
Genesis 46

Jacob Moves to Egypt

Jacob set out with all that he had and God spoke to him in visions of the
night and said, Jacob, I am the God your father; do not be afraid to go down
to Egypt, for I will make you a great nation down there. I will go down with
you to Egypt. They took their livestock and their property, which they had
acquired in the land of Canaan, and came to Egypt. All of Jacobs sons and
their families went to Egypt to be with their brother Joseph. There were
between 70-75 people who moved to Egypt. Joseph prepared his chariot and went
up to meet his father Jacob; and as soon as he appeared before him, he fell on
his neck and wept on his neck a long time. Then Jacob said to Joseph, now let
me die, since I have seen your face, that you are still alive. Joseph said to
his brothers and his fathers household, I will go up and tell Pharaoh that my
brothers and my fathers household, who were in the land of Canaan, have come
to me. When Pharaoh calls and says, what is your occupation, you shall say,
your servants have been keepers of livestock from our youth.
Genesis 47

Jacobs Family Settles in Goshen, Result of the Famine

Then Joseph went to Pharaoh and said, my father and my brothers have come out
of the land of Canaan; and they are in the land of Goshen. He took five men
among his brothers and presented them to Pharaoh. Pharaoh told them that the
land of Egypt is at their disposal. Then Joseph presented his father to
Pharaoh; and Jacob blessed Pharaoh. Pharaoh asked Jacob how many years has he
lived, and Jacob responded 130. Some Egyptians came to Joseph without money
and wanted food. Joseph allowed them to exchange their livestock for food and
they accepted. They returned again the next year without livestock or food and
Joseph allowed them to be Pharaohs slave. By now the famine in Egypt was
becoming severe and many Egyptians sold the land to Pharaoh in order to obtain
food. Joseph gave the people seed; and the first 20% would go to Pharaoh and
they would keep 80%. So they were essentially taxed 20% which is very low
compared to today. Jacob lived in Egypt for 17 years and he told Joseph to
swear to me, that I will not be buried in Egypt when I die. Joseph said I will
do as you said.
Genesis 48

Israels Last Days

Joseph was told, your father is sick, so he took his sons, Manasseh and
Ephraim with him. Manasseh was the first born. When Jacob was told Joseph has
come to you, he sat up in the bed. Jacob said to Joseph, God Almighty appeared
to me at Luz (Bethel) in the land of Canaan and blessed me, and said, and I
will give this land to your descendants. Jacob told Joseph that his two sons
born in Egypt are mine as Reuben and Simeon. Jacob is legally adopting
Manasseh and Ephraim as his own. The first born is a title of a position that
sometimes will pass to the second or others; but they are entitled to be in
charge or have the larger portion. The eyes of Jacob are so dim that he could
see hardly at all. Joseph brought his sons very close to Jacob. He took
Ephraim (younger brother) with his right hand, on Israels left side, and
Manasseh (older brother) with his left hand on Israels right side and brought
them close to him and blessed them. When Joseph saw he placed his right hand
on Ephraims (younger brother) head, it displeased him; and he grabbed his
fathers right hand to remove it from Ephraims head and place it on
Manassehs hand. Jacob is using his right hand to bless the younger son,

Ephraim. Joseph said to his father, Manasseh is the first born so place your
right hand on his head. But his father refused saying, I know my son. However
his younger brother, Ephraim, will be greater than Manasseh, and his
descendants shall become a multitude of nations. Then Jacob said to Joseph he
was about to die, but God will be with you.
Genesis 49

Israels Prophecy concerning His Sons

Then Jacob summoned his sons and said, assemble yourselves so that I may tell
you what will befall you in the days to come. Gather together and hear, O sons
of Jacob and listen to your father. We see how often God uses his sovereignty
to bypass the firstborn. The firstborn has the double portion, priest of the
family but God sometimes bypasses the first-born; Isaac over Ishmael, Jacob
over Esau, Judah and Joseph over Ruben, Moses over Aaron, David ahead of all
of his brothers. God is putting his fingerprint on what is going on. Jacob
breathed his last breath and he was buried in the same place as with Abraham
and Sarah, Isaac and Rebekah and Leah.
Genesis 50

The Death of Israel, Burial at Machpelah

Then Joseph fell on his fathers face, and wept over him and kissed him.
Joseph commanded his servants to embalm his father. The Egyptians wept for him
for seventy days. When the days of mourning were past, Joseph told Pharaoh to
leave to bury his father. Pharaoh allowed Joseph to leave and Pharaohs
servants went with him. Jacob was buried at Machpelah along with Abraham and
Sarah, Isaac and Rebekah, and Leah. After he buried his father, Joseph
returned to Egypt. When Josephs brothers saw their father was dead, they were
worried that Joseph would retaliate for selling him into slavery. They said,
please forgive me, I beg you. Joseph said to them, do not be afraid. Joseph
stayed in Egypt and lived one hundred and ten years. Joseph said to his
brothers, I am about to die, but God will surely take care of you and bring
you up from this land which He promised on oath to Abraham, to Isaac and to
Jacob.
