FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

AIA/LA ANNOUNCES SECOND HALF OF THEIR ANNUAL SPRING HOME

TOUR
Inside LA: A Tour of Santa Monica’s Most Significant Modern Homes

Los Angeles, CA (March 23, 2009) – The American Institute of Architects Los
Angeles (www.aialosangeles.org) is proud to announce the second half of the Spring
Home Tour that will take visitors inside some of the most significant modern
residences of the picturesque seaside community of Santa Monica. From a
hyberbolic parabloid that draws from its surroundings to a fabulous prefab that
experiments with spatial dimension and construction, each of the homes featured
on this tour are living examples dynamic architecture on the leading edge of the
20th century.

The self-guided tour, scheduled for Sunday, May 3rd from 11am to 4pm, will
include:

PAINTED LIGHT STUDIO

(Jennifer Wen, AIA – Jennifer Wen Architecture)
Dynamic Hyperbolic Paraboloid

This building draws its soul from the beauty of the

surrounding nature and its form from zoning constraints and
functional needs, unfolded within an artistic consciousness.
The hyperbolic paraboloid exterior walls, for example;
encase a sequence of light and dark spaces, while meeting
complex zoning requirements. Nature and constraints, art
and architecture, functions and aesthetics, light and shadow,
live and work - these paradoxes have brought about an
unexpected dynamic architecture. (Photo: Henry Cabala)
HERRON RESIDENCE
(Michael Lee, AIA – Michael Lee Architects)
Dramatically Bisected Modern Pavilion

To create a sense of arrival and spatial

complexity on this large, flat lot, the main
entry of this young family’s home is set
back into a partially covered exterior court.
This court is sheltered from the street by a
detached two-story pavilion structure. The
entry axis bisects the 4,500 square foot
house into two halves that are connected by
a large linear skylight. The southern half of
the house contains the more formal
elements of the program and the northern
half contains the family-oriented spaces for
the kitchen, media and game rooms. Both
halves open to landscaped courtyards and a
pool via large, pocketing, sliding doors that introduce an indoor/outdoor flexibility to the
floor plan. All bedrooms are on the second floor. The freestanding pavilion at the front
contains a first floor office—accessed through the entry court—and a second floor guest
bedroom entered by crossing an exterior bridge from the main house. (Photo: Chris Nolasco)

KING RESIDENCE
(John Friedman, FAIA + Alice Kimm, AIA – John Friedman Alice Kimm Architects)
Striking Corner Residence

Located on a corner lot in Ocean Park, this house is

sited to maximize its relationship with the
surrounding environment. Downstairs, the main
living areas open onto a large front yard that
encourages social interaction with friends and
neighbors on the street. The upstairs bedrooms
have unobstructed views towards the Marina and
LAX. Abundant natural light and ventilation are
found throughout the structure. (Photo: Benny

VENICE PREFAB
(Jennifer Siegal, Office of Mobile Design, a Jennifer Siegal Company)
A Prefabricated, Sustainable Sanctuary

OMD's newest Venice Prefab exhibits the ideas of

prefabrication, custom design, precision crafting
and spaciousness achieved through an
indoor/outdoor fluidity. More than just green and
modern, the home demonstrates OMD’s
commitment to merging responsible design with
new technologies and luxurious details. The home
sits on a 10,000 sf ft site, with its courtyard design
inspired by the LA climate. The 4 modular
prefabricated steel frame structures, measuring
2400 sq ft feature high interior 10 foot 6 inch ceilings, and project a 4 foot deep exterior
shade awning wrapping the internal West facing courtyard and street side. Two of the
existing structures on the property were recycled and remodeled to become the master
suite and bathroom, office, laundry and detached 820 sf ft garage. Bamboo floors, tankless
water heaters, Duo-flush toilets and shade awnings are green features used all through the
home. The master planning of the site includes OMD’s landscape design employing native
and drought tolerant plantings, creating a front yard of raised vegetable gardens and a
center private courtyard for outdoor dining, fire place and splash pool. (Photo: Gerardo

“We’ve selected four exemplary examples of modern architecture for our Spring
Home Tour,” explains Carlo Caccavale, Associate Director of AIA Los Angeles. “Each
singular design must be experienced in order to be fully understood.”
