Can art ever be considered disgusting?

I find this to be a rather

interesting question as art is something extremely subjective and
has been a theme for debate for some time now. The first step in
answering this question is, in my opinion, defining the word art. I
almost got you fooled. I cant define or differentiate art from random
things as even the critics cant agree and give an universally
accepted explanation. Nowadays, modern art is considered more
confusing and even harder to place in a category because if a piece
of work sends me a strong message, it may mean nothing to you.
But for the sake of getting deeper into the subject and specifically in
the disgusting part of art, I suggest on taking the definition of the
word art that we find in the Oxford Dictionary: NOUN
1
[MASS NOUN] The expression or application of human creative skill and
imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing
works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power:
the art of the Renaissance
great art is concerned with moral imperfections
she studied art in Paris
1.1
Works produced by human creative skill and imagination:
his collection of modern art
1.2
Creative activity resulting in the production of paintings, drawings, or
sculpture:
shes good at art
So far so good, but this does not exclude the possibility of
disgusting forms of art. In my opinion, I believe there is no such
thing. Of course I consider some pieces of modern art to be rather
silly and even stupid because for me, personally, it does not bring
up feelings nor I believe is a result of ones imagination. Call me old
fashioned but recently I have come across an article that presented
the Museum of Non-Visible Art or MONA and a woman who bought a
piece of art that was basically a framed image of the phrase No
Image Is Available and paid 10,000$ for it. For me , this is the first
category, the one I cant quite understand and may be too abstract
for me.
On the other hand, there are forms of art that have been banned
or even never allowed in museums because are considered creepy
and even disgusting so they and up in a museum on their own,
along with similar pieces of art. The one that I found the most
intriguing was a painting of a woman that was removed from a
London museum. Leena McCalls oil painting of her friend, entitled
Portrait of Ms. Ruby May, Standing, features the model smoking a
pipe and wearing a fur-trimmed vest and short trousers, unbuttoned
to reveal her cleavage and a strip of black pubic hair. This painting
selected by the Society for Womens Artists (SWA) has been
removed from a London exhibition because it was deemed to be

too pornographic and disgusting, the artist has said. The artist
said the piece was designed to get people talking about [Ms Mays]
sexuality but it seems she has been too successful in that regard
for the liking of the management at The Mall Gallery in central
London.
Other forms of disgusting art are the ones made out of dead
human parts, urine, feces, blood or vomit that some people would
never want in their house. As I have previously stated, I wouldnt
mind having a Maori Warrior head in a jar in my living room, a
painting made of blood or to go and see extravagant art at a
museum as long as it brings up a feeling in me.
All in all, art takes all different forms, style and shapes and we
shouldnt waste our lives criticizing the ones that we dont like and
we find disgusting, but appreciate the ones in which we see a strong
message.
