Marks Awarded:

Problem 1:
1. Calculate the critical load for failure using mechanism method of analysis.
a)

(10 marks)
b)

(10 marks)
Problem 2:
2. A beam fixed on both ends as shown in the figure below:

a) How many plastic hinges are required to form a mechanism?

b) What is the sequence of plastic hinge formation for the following 3 scenarios?

1) If the beam is made of a uniform rectangular steel section. Note: The plastic
moment capacity Mp is same is everywhere for this section.
2) If the beam is made of reinforced concrete (RCC Beam). The RCC beam is
reinforced with longitudinal bars at top and bottom. The ultimate moment capacity at
mid-section Mu1 (sagging) and ultimate moment capacity k Mu1 at fixed ends (hogging)
is equal, i.e. k= 1.
3) If the RCC beam has k= 2?
(Support your answers with clear explanation)

Problem 3:
3. ACB is a triangular RCC slab in the x-y plane. AB is fixed along edge AB. The coordinates of A(0,0,0), B(L1,0,0), C(L1/2, L2,0). A uniform load intensity w acts per unit
area of the slab. The slab forms a mechanism with yield line along AB (-ve yield line)
and the point C deflects downward.
The ultimate moment capacity of slab along the yield line AB is mub.

a) Calculate the external work done by the load w from first principles involving
0

Fdz (
0

wdx0 dy0 )dz

ABC

Check if the answer you are getting is same as the

w x Area of ABC x Vertical downward movement at centre of gravity of area ABC.
b) Calculate the internal work done due to rotation of the plate about the yield line AB.
Hint: Draw a normal from CN to AB. Join CN. Calculate the angle CNC and multiply it
with Mub (=mub AB) to get the internal work.
(10+10 marks)

Problem 4:
4. ACB is a triangular plate reinforced along mutually perpendicular direction AC and
BC. The coordinates of the points are C(0,0,0), A(L1,0,0), B(0,L2,0). The slab forms a
mechanism with yield line along AB (-ve yield line) and the point C deflects downward.
The ultimate moment capacity of slab along the yield line AB is mub. If mu1 and mu2 are
the ultimate moment capacities along AC and BC respectively, show that the internal
work done due to rotation about yield line AB can be expressed as

mub ( AB ) (mu1

L1
L
mu 2 2 )
L2
L1
(10 marks)

Problem 5:
5. An isotropically reinforced trapezoidal slab shown in figure below is continuous on
three edges and free at the longest edge. Compute the collapse load if the slab carries
uniformly distributed load of wu per unit area ( k =1).
(20 marks)
Hints: E, F move downward. +ve yield lines along AE, BF; -ve yield lines along AD,
AB, and BC. For calculating work done by load wu on area ADE, BFC, AEN1, BFN2
(EN1, FN2 are normals to AB) you can use 3a. For calculating internal work done about
yield lines AE, FB use the result in problem 4. For calculating internal work done about
yield line AD, BC , use same methodology as in 3b (Take mub = k mu for the -ve yield
lines AD, BC and AB). After calculating wu, find x/L corresponding to minimum wu. (A
messy equation for x/L is obtained, which needs to be solved iteratively in calculator
using mid-point search for solution noting that f(x) changes sign from +ve to -ve at the
solution).

Problem 6:
6. A rectangular orthotropically reinforced slab of size 6.0m x 4.5 m is continuous on all
the four edges. The slab carries total uniformly distributed load of 4.5 kN/m 2 inclusive of
self-weight at service conditions. Design the slab with ultimate moments on continuous
supports being same as the span moment i.e k1 = k2 = k =1.0. Also mu2 / mu1 =0.5.The
materials to be used are M20 concrete and HYSD steel of grade Fe 415.
