Ensemble Part
Soundstream Commission 2015
Premiere performance by Soundstream Collective and the Adelaide Philharmonic Choir
on 16 April 2015
at Samstag Museum of Art, South Australia
9 minutes 34 seconds
For Choir, Violin, Cello, Keyboard, Percussion and Video
Performers:
Warwick Stengrds (Conductor)
Elizabeth Layton (Violin)
Simon Cobcroft (Cello)
Gabriella Smart (E. Piano)
Andrew Penrose (Percussion: Vibraphone)
Notation Instructions
Vibraphone:
= harmonics
ord. slow
E. Keyboard:
Use the volume fader for hairpin
dynamic changes.
Choose an organ-like sound with a
long sustain slow attack starting from bar 1
change to a fast attack and a short sustain from
bar 56
= 1/4 sharp
= 1/4 flat
The choirs video length is 10'10". They begin at 18" and end at 9'54" with a total running time 9'34"
This ensemble part is approximately 9'34", but has a more flexible time then the fixed video time.
The ensemble should end shortly after the choir.
Performance Instruction
This symbol indicates a section where all ensemble players are to perform
instructions like the one given below for 20"
The volume on the electronic keyboard should be turned down so it doesnt make a sound electronically (acoustic sounds are fine!).
The vibraphone player is to brush across a sheet of sand paper with a small piece of wood, back and forth repeatedly with the
instruction given (fast medium or slow pace with light, medium or heavy pressure).
The sheet of sand paper can be fixed to a table next to the vibraphone. This is to happen while the violin, cello and keyboard
performers are walking their index and middle finger across lines on their instrument.

Walk your index and middle finger along a line on your instrument at a slow pace
with light pressure.
A line could be considered the outline of your instrument, its corners, its strings, between keys etc...
Follow the line where ever it takes you. If the line ends move your finger to another line and continue.
Allow any sound that happens to happen.
Sounds could include rubbing along strings and the wood, push along the keys and plastic,
knocking against the body of the vibraphone and its tubes. Do this playfully.
Be child-like with your explorations.
