Exhaust gas cleaning for competitive ECA compliance

The proven route to

ECA compliance
SOx scrubbers are the smart choice for complying
with sulphur limits in Emission Control Areas (ECAs).
The smartest choice of all is PureSOx from Alfa Laval.

A route well travelled

No choice of scrubber is more
secure than PureSOx. Built with
Alfa Laval core expertise and
decades of marine scrubber experience, PureSOx has been at
sea since 2009, reliably cleaning
main and auxiliary engine exhaust
gas to ECA-compliant levels.
In fact, PureSOx has more
references than any other single
SOx scrubber technology.
Among them are repeat orders
from major customers, as well as
installations as large as 28 MW.

PureSOx from Alfa Laval offers:

SOx removal rate >98% (exceeds IMO requirements)
Open-loop, closed-loop or hybrid operation
Reliable water cleaning in closed-loop mode
Compatibility with all engines
Proven compliance and strong references

The profitable
choice
The ability to use economical
HFO, rather than expensive
MGO, rapidly makes a difference
in operating costs. Choosing the
scrubber route will give you a
long-term cost advantage.
Below is a profitability calculation for a vessel with a 15 MW
main engine consuming 8000
tonnes of HFO annually. When
operating 100% in ECA waters,
its annual fuel savings with
PureSOx will be over
USD 3,000,000.

Introducing PureSOx 2.0

Now the PureSOx platform has
entered its next generation. Suitable for an even wider range
of vessels, it combines familiar
PureSOx advantages with
entirely new flexibility.

PureSOx 2.0 has a more compact

construction and new integration possibilities that simplify
design and installation. Likewise, it offers alternatives that
can further reduce costs and
simplify life for the crew.

This is PureSOx 2.0

PureSOx is a proven system with high flexibility, available in open-loop, closed-loop
and hybrid configurations that serve one or more exhaust gas sources. With the
introduction of PureSOx 2.0, the flexibility is even greater.

Proven technology
PureSOx removes over 98%
of SOx emissions, which easily
meets the 0.1% fuel sulphur
equivalent required in ECAs by
MARPOL Annex VI. In addition,
it traps up to 80% of the harmful particulate matter (PM). Even
when engine load fluctuates,
PureSOx keeps emissions
firmly within ECA limits.
None of this is changed in
PureSOx 2.0. Instead, PureSOx
2.0 strengthens the adaptability
and ease of use that make
PureSOx one of the most popular
scrubbers on the market.

Advances in PureSOx 2.0

PureSOx 2.0 offers new advantages that begin with getting
the scrubber on board. A 15%
smaller scrubber diameter, a
50% smaller control system and
greater modularity in the water
cleaning unit simplify both
design and installation.
Added to this is the ability to
handle exhaust gas from both

engines and boilers, or to place

the scrubber before the silencer
since it attenuates noise on its
own. Both of these options
reduce additional equipment.
If desired, you can even use
powder rather than a liquid
additive in closed-loop mode,
which means safer handling
and lower consumable costs.

Core expertise
Alfa Laval is one of the few
suppliers with long-term scrubber experience in the marine
environment. PureSOx builds

on decades of scrubber deliveries as an integral component of

inert gas production systems,
which Alfa Laval has provided to
oil, chemical and LNG carriers
for over 40 years.
Another Alfa Laval core technology in PureSOx is centrifugal
separation, which is used in the
PureSOx water cleaning unit.
Cleaning of the circulation water
is vital in closed-loop operation,

and centrifugal separation is

currently the only alternative that
performs reliably in rough waters.
The PureSOx water cleaning unit
minimizes sludge volumes, effectively removes particles and allows
instant bleed-off of cleaned circulation water without settling
time or filtering. In PureSOx 2.0,
it can be split into three sections
that are easy to get on board and
can be independently placed.

Built for the

way you sail
PureSOx is tailored to your specific vessel, based on
your priorities and sailing profile. An ideal combination
of flexibility and savings is often achieved by using a
hybrid system with multiple inlets.

Hybrid flexibility
PureSOx is available in an openloop configuration, which uses
seawater, as well as a closedloop configuration, which uses
desalinated circulation water and
an alkaline additive. However, the
system is most often installed
in a hybrid configuration, which
offers both open-loop and
closed-loop modes.
With a hybrid system, you can
use PureSOx in open-loop mode
to reduce operating costs whenever possible. When low sea-

water alkalinity or local regulations demand it, you can quickly

switch to closed-loop mode and
continue using your scrubber.
Multiple exhaust gas sources
PureSOx can be integrated
into your vessel in many ways.
One of the most effective ways
is to design it with multiple inlets, which allows one scrubber
to clean exhaust gas from both
main and auxiliary engines, as
well as boiler exhaust gas. This
greatly reduces the footprint and
weight of the scrubber system,

which is especially useful for retrofits, where space is at a premium.

The PureSOx multiple-inlet system has classification society
approval, and its double-disc
valves prevent any backflow
of exhaust gas into the engine
room when an engine or boiler is
not in service. The sealing air in
and around these valves ensures
that they cannot stick to the
valve housing or be impaired by
soot.

A reference list of success

Retrofit of the Plyca
Installed in 2012, the PureSOx system
aboard the Spliethoff ConRo vessel
Plyca is the worlds largest SOx
scrubber. It serves two main and two

auxiliary engines from Wrtsil with a

total of 28 MW. After extensive testing
at sea, Spliethoff decided to install similar
systems aboard five sister vessels.

We wanted to have a
completely independent
system, and thats why
we chose the hybrid.
And thats why we
chose Alfa Laval.
Michael Liljestrm,
Project Leader, Spliethoff

Retrofit of the Ficaria Seaways

The DFDS Ficaria Seaways is a RoRo
vessel with 4650 lane metres on four
decks. In 2009, it was rebuilt to accommodate more cargo and to receive the

first PureSOx pilot system, which is still

serving the 21 MW engine from MAN
B&W. The vessel has since clocked
thousands of hours of ECA-compliant

operation, and PureSOx has been

ordered for five sister vessels.

We have seen that in

both open and closed
loop we can wash
down to a level below
0.1% sulphur.
