Book: Advanced Engineering Mathematics, 10th ed by Kreyszig

We will cover the Laplace Transform and its application to the solution of Ordinary Differential
Equations, systems of Differential Equations, Integral Equations, Integro-Differential Equations and
Evaluation of Infinite Integrals. Topics will include the transforms of the usual elementary functions, the
Heaviside Step function, the Dirac Delta function, some Theory of Generalized Functions, the Gamma
Function, convolution and inverse transforms. We will also cover Fourier Series and Integrals. Topics will
include full range expansions, even/odd functions, half range expansions, Fourier Sine and Cosine
Transforms, Fourier Transform, applications to the solution of Integral Equations, Functions represented
by Fourier Integrals and evaluation of Infinite Integrals. These topics encompass chapters 6 and 11. Some
theory will be illustrated through applications and geometric interpretation of the solutions to problems.
If time permits, we will discuss Linear Difference Equations and associated transforms.
There will be two tests, a midterm and a final. Each test will be worth 100 points. (note: the raw test grade
will be adjusted for test difficulty and class average by a weight called an exam norm. The cumulative
exam norms for the midterm and the final are listed as one value on the grade sheet along with each raw
test score). The midterm will be given on week 6 and the final on week 11. Homework will also be assigned
and collected periodically as determined in class. There will be 5 homework assignments each worth 20
points consisting of problems given by the instructor in class. Your total homework effort will then be
worth 100 points. The final grade will then be initially calculated on the basis of 300 points according to
the following curve.
A
B
C
D
F

%
90 - 100
80 - 89
60 - 79
50 - 59
0 - 49

Total Points
270 - 300
240 - 269
180 - 239
150 - 179
0 - 149

In addition, the + & - grades are given depending on the final grade distribution and the consideration of
extra-credit (extra-credit maximum = 30 points).
The student will submit ALL homework and tests on engineering graph paper. You may write on
only ONE side of the paper. Complete sentences and descriptions are required on all solutions.
Mathematical notation WILL be used correctly at all times. All work must be shown and presented
in a neat and logical manner. The student WILL bring all needed materials to class (BOOKS, paper,
pencils, erasers, calculators, rulers, protractors etc.). Related historical developments will be referenced
and reading on those topics in parallel to our study will be encouraged. An optional paper on a historical
subject related to mathematics may be submitted for extra credit (3-page Minimum). In addition, a
standard set of practice problems will be assigned and it is expected that the student will perform these
for subsequent class discussion. The minimum assignment for this will be at least one ODD problem from
each subsection of exercises. It is up to the student to practice the mathematical art.
Also, ANYONE missing 5 or more classes will need to talk to me personally about this and missing 6
or more classes will need to have written confirmation from a doctor or other acceptable person(s) in
order to obtain a grade other than a U. A minimum of 12 classes must be attended in order to
pass in any case.

DO NOT LOSE THIS!!!
