Sample answerThe Bookworm is my favorite cafe in this city, which is about 15 minutes drive
from the Tianfu Square down the south, and unlike other fancy cafes in the downtown, it sits in a
quiet surrounding. The Bookworm was born 5 years ago with the help of a journalist, who soon
became the business partner and co-owner of Bookworm. During these years, its been popular
and welcomed by local citizens. I guess its probably because the cafe is really the place that can
make them feel at home, ranging from the food, coffee, and decoration.
The Bookworm creates a warm and intimate atmosphere, offering its customers home style food
and drink. When you get annoyed from a trouble in study or at work, having a rest at Bookworm
will be the very pleasant thing to chill out. The greatest part is the live music every Friday night at
which you can enjoy the best jazz and blues. I like the cafe, for its the place where I can relax, eat,

PART1

** Do you think music is important?

Yes, I like music very much. That is to say, I cannot imagine what my life would be like without
music. Firstly, I believe music plays an important part in peoples lives. For example, we can use it
to sooth our minds after a hard day at work, or it can provide us with the rhythm to dance to.
** What kind of music do you enjoy most?
I like pop music very much. Allow me to explain. First of all, pop music is lively, and suits me at my
age. What I mean to say is that us youngsters like to listen to music that fits in with the way we feel
Secondly, usually has a good rhythm. For instance, it is suitable for us to dance on. Lastly, pop
music is simple to understand. That is to say, I like it because it is not difficult to understand, and it
helps me to relax after I have been studying hard for some time.
** How long do you listen to music every day?
Oh, let me think a bit. I guess I listen to music for about half an hour every day. I would, for
example, listen when I get home from school, or in the evenings before I go to bed. On weekends,
however, I listen to music much more. For example, I would invite my best friend over to my place,
and we would listen to our favorite CDs for a few hours at a time.

Yes, I like traveling. Firstly, I believe that traveling is always educational. What I mean to say is that
the people that you meet along the way are usually interesting. Secondly, I wish I were able to
travel more. For example, I have not traveled to a foreign country yet.
** How do you usually travel?
I like to travel by train. Allow me to explain. Firstly, when I travel by train I am able to see more of
my country. In addition, the trains in my country are convenient and comfortable. For example, I

can travel to any city, and I am able to sleep on the train. Lastly, traveling on a train is a social event
as well. For example, one can chat to the other passengers about where they are going, and why
they are traveling.
** Where have you traveled to lately?
I traveled to xxx last month. My parents and I traveled there by train. We went to see my
grandmother who has been ill lately. I enjoyed the trip as I have not been to xxx before. We did not
have the opportunity to sleep on the train, as it takes only six hours to get there.
** What kind of places do you like to visit?
I like to visit places where there is a lot of entertainment. For example, I dont like it when we go
and visit my grandparents in the country. They live on a farm and dont even have a computer for
me to play on. I like to visit the cities where there are movies to watch and nightclubs to visit.

** The website was originally and briefly called Facemash. Mark Zuckerberg was a second year
student, when he wrote the software for the Facemash website. Perhaps, it was Zuckerberg's
sophomoric sense of humor that led him to create the site as a type of "hot or not" game for
Harvard students, where website visitors could compare two student photos side-by-side and
let viewers decide who was "hot" and who was "not".

** On February 4, 2004, Mark Zuckerberg relaunched with a new website "The Facebook".
Example: 911 Terrorist Attack
This event took place on the East coast of the US on September 11, 2001 and it consisted of a
series of suicide attacks conducted by a group of terrorists. These terrorists hijacked commercial
airplanes and directed them into the Pentagon and the World Trade Center buildings in New York
City. Part of the Pentagon was damaged, but both Twin Towers collapsed and were fully destroyed.
Because of these attacks, thousands of innocent people were injured and killed.

1. What do you think we can learn by studying events of the past?
I think we can learn a lot by studying history. Just as individual people learn from their mistakes,
societies can learn from the mistakes made by previous governments or leaders. For example, from
what I've read in the newspapers, many economists are looking back to the time of the Great
Depression, around 80 years ago, in order to understand the financial crisis that is currently
affecting many countries around the world. Even if we don't always learn from mistakes, I think it's
fascinating to study history because it gives us an insight into who we are and where we come
from.
2. What important events do you think might take place in the future?
It's really difficult to predict what will happen in the future; most of the big, historic events of the
past would have been impossible to foresee. For example, I don't think that anyone living 100
years ago could have imagined that people would one day walk on the moon! If I had to guess
what might happen in the future, I'd like to think that scientists will invent cures for diseases like
cancer, and we'll all live longer.

3. Compare the past with the present. The examiner will be listening to your use tenses.
Q: Are there any differences between the types of people who were seen as celebrities in the past
and those who are celebrities nowadays?
Yes, I think there have been some big changes in the types of people who become famous. In the
past, before the invention of television, I suppose there were very few national or international
celebrities; maybe kings and queens, military, political and religious leaders were the only

household names. With the advent of TV and radio, performers such as actors and musicians
became more well-known. However, we now seem to have a completely new breed of celebrity as
a result of 'reality' television programmes; these are people who don't really have any special skills
as performers, but who are famous for just being themselves.

In many countries it is now illegal to use a mobile phone while driving. You could start by talking
about the popularity and benefits of mobile phones, and explain that people want to be able to
answer calls wherever they are. Then you could explain the dangers of being distracted while
driving; this law could reduce the number of road accidents, and therefore save lives.
2)
If you feel confident talking about the 'education' topic, you could choose the 'compulsory
education' law. This is the legal requirement that children up to a certain age must attend school.
In the UK, for example, children are required by law to continue in education until they are 16
years old. This is a good topic because you can talk about the benefits of education.
3) You could choose a more obvious law (it is illegal to steal, carry a gun etc.)

Describe a building
Describe a modern building. You should say:

The tallest building I know is Khalifas Tower in Dubai. I saw it last year, when I was on a groupic
trip that was organized by my college. This skyscraper, with a height of 355 m, is a result of a joint
efforts of local and global architectures and I found it a unique one . Actually, it is a multipurpose
building. from the brushier introduces this lofty, I found that it accommodate tow five starts hotels,
TV antennas, satellites receivers used for phones companies and several local radios senders in

addition to some prestigious offices.

This gigantic building has totally changed the view of Dubai, in other words khalifas Tower is now
another name for trade and tourism, what Dubai is famous for. Looking at the dark blue coloured
tallest building, tourist and traveller now easily recognize where this place is? The movingrestaurant that located in its 44 floor let visitors to see almost entire city just within the time they
eat their lunch or dinner or simply drink Arabic tea and cookies. Because of this, now many visitors
not only save handful money they used to spend on taxies to have a tour of the city, but also save
time to enjoy other activities. I with my classmate bought some precious needed electronics and
gifts because of this saved amount.

1. What do you think are the functions of rivers nowadays?

Rivers have various functions. In the UK, they were probably more important in the past because
they were used for the transportation of goods, but I suppose this is still the case in many parts of
the world. Rivers can be used as a source of renewable energy in the production of hydro-electric
power, and they are also a source of fresh water for drinking and irrigation. Leisure activities are
another function: fishing, canoeing, swimming, bathing... I'm sure there are many other things I
haven't thought of.
2. What do you think of boats and ships as forms of transportation?
I'm not really a fan of boats and ships. If I'm going abroad, I like to get to my destination quickly, so
I prefer travelling by plane. Of course, ships are vital for the transportation of oil and other heavy
cargo.

3. Why do some people like to live near rivers, lakes or the sea?
Well, the view is probably a major factor; most people like to look out to sea, or across a river or
lake. I'd much prefer to look out of my window onto a natural landscape than an apartment
building in a city. Then there's the lifestyle: if you live by the sea, for example, you can lie on the
beach, go for a swim, or do water sports like surfing or waterskiing. I definitely wouldn't mind living
near a beach at some point in my life!

Part 2
Describe a new or exciting thing that you did recently.

Skydiving jump. It was the first adventurous activity ever in my life.

We made it last summer. It was a nice sunny day when we went to skydive. We took a 6 hour
course and were ready to subdue the sky I went for it with my class mates. I was a little afraid
before my first skydiving jump, but my class mates encouraged and convinced me to do it.
It was fantastic! I cant express all the feelings of free flight. It was the combination of happy,
frightened, excited, and satisfied. All of these feelings happened at the same time. I could see the
Earth below me as I flew like a bird with my parachute. I remember I was flying my body with my
friends and was building different formations in the sky. Unfortunately I finally landed in the tree,
but it was a smooth landing. I wasnt hurt at all.
That was a good lasting memory and all I can think about now is when I would be able to
skydive again.

** Some people think that its good to experience new things, such as exploring new places. Do
you agree?
Yes without a doubt. Life is boring if you never encounter or try new things. People will never
know what's really out there unless you explore. I went to Egypt last summer, which was a totally
new place to me. The civilization of Egypt did broaden my horizon.
** What qualities does one need in order to be an explorer?
To be an explorer, one should be brave, cautious, friendly and open-minded. The ability to
pick up local customs and language easily is also important.
** Do you think young people can handle new experiences and new activities better than old
people?
I will say Yes, for the most parts. Seniors usually prefer comfort and to dwell in what they have
built for themselves, including daily routine. Thats what we called: falling into a rut. Young

people like to keep on trying and learning new things as they can adapt well.
