With more than 400 million people speaking Spanish worldwide nearly 40 million in the US and
the growing influence of Hispanic cultures around the globe, knowledge of Spanish and the
Spanish-speaking world has never been more important. Masons Spanish courses and degree
programs give students the opportunity for language development and interdisciplinary study of
the culture, film, history, linguistics and literature of the 20 Spanish-speaking countries, including
the United States. Students can also receive Spanish credit on study-abroad programs in Ecuador
(January) and Spain (June).
NEW! Accelerated MA degree allows highly qualified undergraduates to take SPAN 510
(Fall) and SPAN 502 (Spring) and apply these to both their BA and MA degrees

Requirements for a MAJOR in Spanish:
Six credits in language and culture chosen from 3 options: a) SPAN305 & SPAN 306; b) SPAN
309; or
c) SPAN 315 & a 300-level elective in Spanish.
A course in Spanish writing and stylistics (SPAN 370)
Two introductory courses in linguistics and literary/cultural studies: SPAN 385 & SPAN 390
Twelve credits of 400-level SPAN courses in culture, film, linguistics, literatures, etc.
Six additional credits at the 300-level or above, including SPAN courses, FRLN 385, internships, etc.
Only one course taught in English may be applied towards the major.
Requirements for a MINOR in Spanish:
Six credits in language and culture chosen from 3 options: a) SPAN305 & SPAN 306; b) SPAN 309;
or c) SPAN 315 & a 300-level elective in Spanish.
A course in Spanish writing and stylistics (SPAN 370)

 An introductory course in linguistics, Latin@ studies, or literary/cultural studies (SPAN 385, SPAN
388 or SPAN 390)
Six additional credits at the 300-level or above, including SPAN courses, FRLN 385, internships, etc.
One course taught in English may be applied towards the minor.
