Five-Year Professional Development and Action Plan

FIVE-YEAR PLAN

Objective 1: Deepen meaningful involvement with a professional association in order to


connect with and learn from others in the field.
2015: Join a professional association related to the functional area of my first job. Volunteer to
review conference proposals for NASPA or other association.
2016 and 2017: Participate in a committee/knowledge community/working group in the
association. Participate as a mentee in a mentorship program.
2018: Take on a leadership role in a committee/knowledge community/working group.
2019: Become a mentor in a mentorship program.
Objective 2: Enhance assessment, evaluation, research, and scholarship skills.
2015: Complete an evaluation of a program that is part of my first job. Develop program changes
related to the evaluation.
2016: Work on a research project around an issue related to my work (for example, the
experiences of students of color in community engagement work). Become involved with a
professional academic journal.
2017: Present at a conference related to the findings of my research project.
2018: Collaborate with other professionals working on the issue.
2019: Write and submit an article for publication based on my research.
Objective 3: Establish strong cross-campus collaboration and relationships.
2015: Arrange coffee meetings with at least one professional on my campus each month.
2016: Participate on a campus or divisional committee. Seek to participate in one committee
each year going forward.
2017: Teach a course, such as a first-year seminar or basic skills class.
2018: Engage in campus conversational groups, related to identity or mutual interests (such as a
higher education book club). Start a group if necessary.
2019: Collaborate with other offices on a major campus event.
Objective 4: Gain experience in and develop skills in human and organizational resource
management.
2015: Participate in hiring process for student leaders in my office.
2016: Participate on hiring committee for professional staff position.
2017: If not already managing a budget, work with supervisor to access budget opportunities,
such as by sitting in on budget meetings.
2018: If not already doing so, seek an opportunity to supervise a professional staff member.
2019: Participate in workshops or other trainings to strengthen budget and supervision skills.
Overall: Integrate professional development as an ongoing part of my job.
Use this plan to develop a professional development plan with my supervisor.
Devote a consistent amount of work time each week (for example, half an hour every Monday)
to read journal articles related to my work. Make note of recommendations from the literature to
integrate into my work.
Participate in webinars and any available/appropriate certificate programs at my institution.
Pick a topic each year to learn about and read current books related to the topic.
