Taje Beauty Clinic

To celebrate Tajes 10th anniversary, owner Nicola Davies
held a special party to thank her loyal clientele, and to also
launch the new rebranding of her business.
On Saturday, March 7 guests were treated to
bubbly and goody bags, as well as a buffet from
neighbouring business Parc Pantry.
Voice caught up with owner Nicola, who said:
Our new branding and logo reinvents Taje as a
beauty clinic as opposed to a beauty salon, a title
we feel more accurately describes what we do
here.
At the 10 year milestone I wanted to start a
new chapter for Taje, as the business has evolved
so much over the years.
The new logo itself reects not just simply a
nger print, but a geometric, modern and clean
pattern which offers the impression of perfect skin
and beauty, which are the core fundamentals of
Taje.
Nicola and her team have been leading the way
when it comes to beauty innovation, as they have
won the V Award for this category four years in
a row.
Last year Taje introduced a range of state-of-the
art non surgical CACI treatments, with the CACI
Ultra Machine being at the forefront.
Not only being awarded for their innovation in
beauty, the team at Taje were recently accredited

as being an expert salon by Dermalogica.

Nicola said: Here at Taje we aim to make each
client feel they have received the beauty treatment
requested to a level above and beyond their
expectations.
This is achieved by using only the best quality
products and latest treatments available, as well as
training and developing our skills on how to use
the products properly and efciently to achieve the
best results.
My team and I would like to thank everyone
for their continued support over the last decade
we really appreciate your loyalty and friendship.
We look forward to offering you new treatments
and hope that you will continue to support us in
this exciting new chapter of Taje Beauty Clinic.
Heres to another 10 years!
The multi award-winning Taje Beauty Clinic is
located at 159 Larch Grove, Malpas, NP20 6LA.

PROJECTS SET TO
MAKE CITY CENTRE
MORE VIBRANT

Newports Vibrant and Viable Places

programme is making good progress with a
number of projects now under way.
Key buildings in High Street are being
transformed thanks to nancial assistance from
the scheme, while other properties are being
given a new look.
Newport City Council was awarded
nearly 15m by the Welsh Government under
its Vibrant and Viable Places regeneration
framework and this is expected to lead to a total
investment of 60m thanks to partnerships with
the third and private sector.
The ambitious initiative is aimed at creating
homes and businesses in key buildings, bringing
new spaces, skills and jobs to the city centre.
The city council is on track to spend more
than 6m of the Welsh Government funding in
the rst year of the programme.
Minister for communities and tackling
poverty Lesley Grifths said: We want
communities across Wales to be vibrant,
viable places to live, work and socialise. Im
delighted the Welsh Government has been able
to award nearly 15m towards the regeneration
of Newport, which is set to have a truly
transformative effect on the area.
The start of work on this rst series of
projects marks a signicant milestone. This
programme of regeneration not only will create
much-needed homes and businesses, but also
boost the local economy and provide essential

16 / WEAREVOICE.CO.UK / APRIL.2015

jobs and training opportunities.

Councillor John Richards, Newport City
Councils cabinet member for regeneration and
development, said: It has been a long-held
ambition of the council to introduce a more
vital mix of business, homes, and jobs into the
city centre and it is exciting to see those aims
coming to fruition.
The VVP programme is an important piece
of our vision to revitalise the city centre which
includes Friars Walk, the establishment of the
Business Improvement District and superfast
broadband.
We have worked with the Welsh
Government and a number of different partners
to deliver these rst projects and we can look

forward to many more over the next couple of

years making the city centre a great place to
live, work and relax.
One major project involves a facelift for the
landmark National Buildings in Commercial
Street, once home to Marks electrical shop.
Work has begun on a new-look for the shop
fronts and the residential upper oors.
Andrew Jacobs, a National Buildings
trustee, said the property was about 100 years
old and stood on the site of the former St Pauls
National Schools.
National Buildings is an ornate building but
over the years has suffered from the ravages of
time. We are all extremely pleased and excited
that the building will be restored to its former

@wearevoice

Meanwhile, the rst project to

be started as part of the programme
is due for completion this summer.
Construction company Willis is turning
a property near the Royal Gwent
Hospital into apartments for the Seren
Group.
Neil Barber, Serens director of
development, said: Seren is really
pleased to be working with the city
council and Willis Construction
to deliver one of the rst major
schemes to be funded under the Welsh
Governments vibrant and viable places
programme.
This is such an important
initiative from WG as it is making a
huge difference to the ability to bring
buildings which have been empty
for extremely long periods back into
benecial use. This project is an
excellent example as the buildings had
been vacant for nearly 20 years and
were falling into serious disrepair and
attracting anti-social behaviour.
This was made worse by the fact
that they occupy such a prominent
location next to the main entrance to
the Royal Gwent Hospital and also on
one of the major access roads to the city
centre. We have been delighted with
the support we have received from the
city council to turn this eye-sore into
high quality affordable apartments. The
completed buildings will also include
many of the original design features
which will enhance the Clytha Square
conservation area.

glory with the help of the city council.

The whole of the front of the building
is being cleaned and the faade is being
brought back to a similar look to when it
was originally built in the early 1900s.
The building has a prominent
standing opposite St Pauls Church at
the lower end of Commercial Street and
will provide an attractive entrance to one
of the gateways to the city centre. The
property provides a selection of retail
units from half units to a double-unit
which can foster growth from start-ups
to fully established businesses. As well
as retail, the property is also home to 12
ats which provide for an exciting and
vibrant time in the heart of Newport for
those lucky enough to live there.
Last year Newport negotiated a
short-term loan to the company owned
by successful businessman Jahan Abedi
to convert the former Kings Hotel into
high-quality apartments, ofces and
shops. The High Street project is the
second major project in the city for Mr
Abedi, one of TVs Secret Millionaires,
who is also behind the successful Shire
Hall development.
Grant aid has also been awarded
by the council towards the major
refurbishment of the former Yates
building to turn it into a Premier Inn,
also in High Street and near the railway
station.
Improvements to the access and
frontage of the Citizens Advice Bureau
in Corn Street and enhancements to the
facades of three commercial properties
in Cardiff Road are also progressing.

Some of golfs past masters, including two-time

Major winner Ian Woosnam, will be descending on
Newport from May 29-31 for the Wales Senior Open.
The 250,000 tournament, which builds on the
legacy of last years successful staging of the Senior
Open Championship at Royal Porthcawl, will be held
at the Celtic Manor Resort, host venue for The 2010
Ryder Cup.
Ahead of the Wales Senior Open, Welshman
Mark Mouland, a winner on the European Senior
Tour, visited Newport.
Mouland said: As a proud Welshman, Im
obviously really looking forward to playing in the
Wales Senior Open. Its great that the tournament
is back on the Senior Tour schedule and I hope as
many people as possible come along to show their
support.
Spectators can buy an early bird ticket for just

FRIARS WALK
APPOINT A NEW
OPERATIONS
DIRECTOR FOR
THE CENTRE
Hi, Im Simon Pullen and I have
recently joined Queensberry Strategic
Property Management as operations
director with responsibility for Friars Walk
here in Newport.
I know this area well. I was born
in Merthyr Tydl and grew up
in South Wales. One of my
rst jobs was as a security
ofcer at the Kingsway
Shopping Centre. Its
great to be coming back
after such a long time
and be involved in one
of the biggest things to
happen to the city. It is a
really exciting time and a very
emotional experience for me as I
had some of my best working experiences
here in Newport.
I started my shopping centre
management career at the Red Dragon
Centre (formerly Atlantic Wharf Leisure
Village) in Cardiff in 1996, then moved to
Wiltshire, Herefordshire and North Wales
working for some of the largest property
owners in the UK. So I have a huge
amount of experience managing shopping
centres
In my most recent role, I set up and
managed SouthGate Shopping Centre in

18 / WEAREVOICE.CO.UK / APRIL.2015

Bath a 500,000 sqft retail-led mixed use

development. I also played an integral
role in setting up and chairing the BID
Company in Bath over the six years. Im
keen to be involved in the Newport BID
and to share my experience.
My role in Newport is to
work with the development
team and site contractors
to get Friars Walk ready
for day one trading.
This involves recruiting
centre management
staff, liaising with the
wider team, building
relationships with retailers
and restaurant operators and
assisting in recruitment of their
staff.
Other key jobs like ensuring its clean,
safe and secure and that everyone is aware
of Friars Walk, our line up and the opening
date.
Im so proud to be back in Newport
working on Friars Walk. Its an immensely
exciting time and you can really get a feel
something great is about to happen.
Friars Walk will be a game-changer for
Newport and it will soon become one of
the top 100 shopping destinations.
November 12 here we come!

The clocks have nally sprung forward and spring

is now upon us, meaning its lighter in the mornings,
which trust me, when you get up at 5am for the Capital
Breakfast show is an absolute delight!
It has been a busy few weeks for us on Capital
Breakfast, where among other things, Matt smashed the
City Of Newport Half Marathon and got a sub-two-hour
personal best nice one Matt. We also managed to send
Polly on a date with a listener. Dont get too excited
though, as unfortunately it was just the one date. Im sure
her perfect man is out there somewhere in South Wales.
Following the news of a Kanye West fan selling a
bag of air from his recent London gig (living proof that
people will buy anything these days), we auctioned off
our morning breath on the show. We were very surprised
at the response we just hope the winning bidder didnt
pass out when they opened the box.
We all love the rugby and got totally involved with
the RBS 6 Nations by doing live shows in the Brewhouse
in Cardiff city centre during the matches. It was great
to have lots of you there to have a few cheeky bevvies
with us. We had a blast, and hope well be able to do
something similar again soon.
Coming up later this month, we have some seriously
exciting One Direction news to share with you all, so we
expect all the Directioners, and their parents, to block
our phone lines when we make our big announcement.
Whenever we so much as mention the bands name, we
get bombarded with texts, calls and tweets, so were
expecting nothing less this time around. I know youre
desperate to know what the news is, but I cant tell you
JUST yet Im afraid. Make sure you stay tuned to the
Capital Breakfast show weekday mornings from 6am, as
all will be revealed soon.

CITY HOT
SPOTS

Fir W i
cn so

The City of Newport, which is ideally located in terms

of communications links, is being transformed with
massive investment in housing, retail and leisure. Jo
Barnes chats to Katie Darlow, of Roberts & Co estate
agents, Newport, about where the hot spots are for
buying or renting in our happening, revitalised city...

20 / WEAREVOICE.CO.UK / APRIL.2015

M4 TO CARDIFF
& SWANSEA

I think Friars Walk will

be a great addition
for Newport and can
only strengthen what
we are already seeing
in property sales and
investment in Newport
Katie Darlow

Where are the up-andcoming areas in Newport

for house hunters-buying
and renting?
We have seen an increase
in sales and higher sold
prices in the last few years in
the ex-council areas such as
Bettws, Ringland and Alway.
The development of Llanwern
and Newport high schools
in recent years has aided this
increase along with Newport
Retail Park and the new house
build sites around them.
Closer to the city centre the Riverfront area is popular.
Where is the best place in the city for a first-time buyer/
renter to bag a bargain?
The most popular areas to buy would be the streets and roads
close to the city centre such as Caerleon Road, Corporation
Road and Baneswell and many of the streets and roads
off them. Typically they would be looking at two or three
bedroom terraced properties. Sometimes we have seen sales
as low as the 50,000 to 60,000 mark in the last few years.
Obviously, at these prices, the properties require substantial
remedial work but it appears these are the ones with the
greatest profit margins to be made.
Where are the traditionally popular/favourite areas
in Newport and has that changed or shifted over the
years?
Traditionally, the most popular areas have been either
Ridgeway/Bassaleg/Rhiwderin on the west side or
Christchurch/Beechwood/Langstone/Caerleon on the east
side. This is largely due to the school catchments where
families are either looking for Bassaleg High School or
Caerleon or St Julians. The development of some of the
schools in Newport has changed this slightly over the past few
years with Newport High and Llanwern High proving popular.
What could we expect to pay to buy or rent?
Last year, most of the properties sold in South Wales were
terraced and the average sold price was approximately
118,000. The average house price in Newport for a three
bedroom semi is about 150,000. Detached properties are
approximately 253,000.
Rentals are: terraced three bedroom 525; three bedroom
semi 585; detached 650; flats/apartments 500

CANNY INVESTORS ARE

PICKING UP PRIME
PROPERTY AT AUCTION
Sean Roper, of Paul Fosh
Auctions, Newport, says
Newport is a sleeping giant
in terms of property which,
after many years, appears to
be waking from its slumbers.
Its fair to say that
investors really just
didnt want to know
about Newport a few
years ago but all that
has changed now and
continues to improve.
It can be put down to a
number of factors, some
to do with the sluggish economy as a whole
and the recession but, in the main, down
to the massive boost in confidence brought
about firstly by the Friars Walk scheme and
secondly to the increased foot fall because
of the likes of Admiral choosing to establish
themselves right in the heart of the city.
Newport city centre is being transformed.
People recognise this and are now keen to
buy properties of all types confident in the
knowledge that they will, in all probability,
increase in value and also that they will be
able to find tenants for their property.
Investors witness the steel structures emerging
out from the ground at Friars Walk , the
retail units and restaurants being created
and recognise the difference that this is
already making and will continue to make
in the future. There is a tangible resurgence
of interest in the city which is reflected in the
prices we achieve at auction for properties in
Newport.
Having said that, the prices in Newport are
well below those for similar properties in
Cardiff and Bristol so there are bargains to be
had. But the market is becoming increasingly
warmer as more and more people cotton on
to the fact that Newport is a city in transition.
They see that there is a lot going on here, that
the transport links to and from the city are
excellent now and will improve considerably
in the near future with electrification of the
main rail line and with the possibility of the
creation of the new M4 corridor.
Coincidentally, the next Paul Fosh Auctions
sale is packed with properties in Newport,
across a whole range from a former pub,
to flats and pretty much everything else in
between.
Buying at auction is quick and easy and as
long as you take professional advice, do
your homework and have the funds in place,
it is an ideal and efficient way to get into
the property market especially in an up and
coming city such as Newport.
22 / WEAREVOICE.CO.UK / APRIL.2015

Most landlords find that for the

best yield they were buying two/
three bedroom terraced properties
at about 80,000 and they were
achieving an average rental of
500/525 per calendar month.
What are the benefits of living in
Newport?
I think Newport is one of the best
located cities as it is really central
for links to Cardiff, Bristol, London,
Birmingham and Exeter. We find
lots of young professionals are
now choosing to buy in Newport
with one working in Bristol and the
other in Cardiff as its in the middle,
prices are lower and its a good
compromise.
I think Friars Walk will be a great
addition for Newport and can only
strengthen what we are already
seeing in property sales and
investment in Newport.
Most sought after/ expensive
street in Newport?
The most sought after area in
Newport would probably be the
west side Ridgeway and Allt-yr-yn
with it historically having some of
the oldest and largest properties
in Newport for those people who
choose to live close to the city centre.
Tregarn Road in Langstone and
Glasllwch Lane are probably the
most expensive roads in Newport,
unless you decide to locate to a
more rural area on the outskirts.

NEW PLACES
TO LIVE...
Newport is seeing some luxury apartments springing
up in some of our fabulous old buildings including Shire
Hall, at Pentonville, and the former Kings Hotel right in
the heart of the city.
These come hot on the heels of the redevelopment of
the former Art College in Clarence Place and ahead of
a number of other refurbishments of buildings in the city
centre which will see more people coming to live in the
heart of the city.
These developments include the redevelopment of
Olympia House, which used to house the Passport
Office. The upper floors will be converted into about
60 apartments which will be available for rental.
And under the Vibrant and Viable Places initiative,
more the upper floors of some of the more historic
buildings in the city centre will also be converted.
A number of the buildings in Gold Tops have been sold
to developers keen to convert them into apartments.

BELLWAY LAUNCHES FIRST

HOMES AT JUBILEE PARK
Bellway Homes Wales has launched its first properties at Regents Walk the first phase of
development at Jubilee Park, Newport, south Wales.
Jubilee Park is a new development in Rogerstone just
three miles from Newport City Centre. Regenerating
the site of an old aluminium factory, once complete,
it will see 1,000 new homes, a health and leisure
park, community facilities, landscaped open spaces
and a new primary school.
The first phase of development will see a combined
total of 278 homes built, with Bellway Homes
constructing 134 homes. Potential homeowners
will be able to buy two, three and four bedroomed
properties starting from 149,995 making the site
ideal for both first time buyers and families.
Conveniently located with the M4 just four minutes
away, the development is ideally positioned for
easy commuter access. Each home will also be
fitted out to a high standard with open plan living
space incorporated where possible with the majority
of homes also benefitting from surrounding green
spaces.
Billie Oaten, sales director for Bellway Homes
Wales, said: Regents Walk is attracting a lot of
interest from prospective buyers and we already
have our first occupations.
We are pleased to be able to market the first
homes on such an exciting new development for
Newport. Rogerstone is one of the citys premium
suburbs and our homes there will benefit from a
range of amenities including the new destination
retail and leisure space, Friars Walk.

The sites two showhomes

are now also open
to visitors. The
Wroughton is a
large fourbedroom
detached home
with open
plan kitchen,
a separate
dining room and
a spacious family
area with french
doors to the rear
garden.
The first floor landing leads to the
master bedroom with en-suite, second
double bedroom with en-suite, two
further double bedrooms and a family
bathroom.
The second showhome is the Woodcote,
a four-bedroom detached home with
garage. The ground floor comprises entrance
hallway, downstairs cloakroom, living room
with window overlooking the front garden, open
plan fitted kitchen/dining area with french doors to
rear garden.
The first floor landing leads to the master bedroom
with en-suite, second double bedroom, two further

single bedrooms and family bathroom. Both

showhomes are fitted with conservatories.
Both showhomes are furnished in completely
alternative styles offering visitors different
ideas on interior design. The Wroughton
has been styled using earth tones and a
neutral palette creating a contemporary
chic feel. In contrast the Woodcote uses
fresher tones focusing on calmer greens
matched with grey.
Located just 15 minutes from
Newport and 20 minutes
from the centre of
Cardiff, Regents Walk
provides easy access
to major employers,
leisure facilities,
restaurants and
other recreational
pursuits. Several
major superstores
and independent
shops can be found
within a few miles.
The contemporary homes will sit
alongside a new primary school, shops, picturesque
open spaces and play areas. Further attractions
include Tredegar House and country gardens, as
well as the rolling Welsh countryside.

combining innovation with experience to
provide exemplary service to clients.
The Newport-based firm was set up by
Mark Tutton in 2015 and it provides
tailor-made project packages which
may handle small works to large
commercial developments, new
builds and refurbishments, and
everything in between.
Marks passion for
maintaining excellent
service revolves around
working closely with clients,
maintaining a continuous
dialogue throughout and
providing flexible design
solutions.
The firms expertise is based
on the reputation and experience of
this young entrepreneur, who has more
than15 years within the industry.
At the age of 16 I worked for my father, Ray
Tutton and Son Builders, a well-known property developer,
said Mark.
After obtaining an advanced business qualification

at comprehensive school I went on to complete an

apprenticeship in maintenance operations, which consisted
of NVQ Level 2 in most building trades.
I continued to work for dad for many years and
eventually ran the business for him. But in 2008
I was involved in a serious car crash, and
unfortunately could not continue doing
my job.
I applied for a course at
UWIC and five years later I
graduated with an honours
degree in architectural design

Since graduating in
2013 Ive worked within the
insurance industry as a loss

With his wealth of knowledge

him, to provide for his young family.
My aim is to provide the public with exceptional

TOWER BLOCK
TRANSFORMATION JOINS THE
CHANGING FACE OF NEWPORT

Hillview before the WHQS works

12.5m investment by Newport City Homes

ver the last few years Newport has undergone

some major changes to its landscape, none
more so than the transformation of Newport
City Homes three tower blocks.

Hillview

The 11-storey city landmarks have benefited from a

12.5m Welsh Housing Quality Standard investment
programme by the local housing association.

CONSULTING WITH RESIDENTS

Before work began, NCH employed Resident Liaison
Officers to consult with the residents of the blocks through
group meetings, open days and one-to-one home visits.
Early in the process a resident communications group was
formed to help keep everyone up to date with the project.
The group was responsible for putting together the Hi
Hopes newsletter which was received on a regular basis by
all residents throughout the lifespan of the project.

SCOPE OF WORKS
Each flat has benefited from a new kitchen, bathroom,
double glazing, heating system and re-wire. The outside of
the blocks have received an energy efficient facelift in the
form of insulated aluminium cladding panels.

CONTRACTORS
The work has been carried out by main contractor Wates
Living Space, which has won Considerate Contractor
awards for its work on the Greenwood and Milton Court
blocks. The firm is awaiting a decision as to an award for its
work at Milton Court.
Work is nearing completion on Greenwood and Milton
Court and is due to conclude at Hillview in May 2015.

A better outlook at Hillview

Meet Mr James who moved into a bedsit in
Hillview back in 2005. Hillview was an obvious
choice for Mr James as he had grown up locally
and wanted to stay close to his family roots.
Before investment works were undertaken at
Hillview, Cheryl Price, Resident Liaison Officer,
met with Mr James to discuss the potential
impacts with him and the option of moving out of
his bedsit for six weeks while work was carried
out or a permanent move to a one bedroom flat.
Mr James said: Ive been waiting for the
chance to get a flat for ages and was really
happy when I was offered the chance of moving
to one and remaining in Hillview.
Cheryl also supported Mr James with his
move by arranging for his belongings to be

packed, moved and unpacked.

He said: It was all done in a couple of hours!
Cheryl has been a great help.
For Mr James the works despite being quite
noisy at times have made a big difference to
Hillview and he really likes the results.

ewport In Bloom was launched at the

Riverside Suite on Thursday, March
10 in 1994. It was part of a strategy
to brighten up the borough and encourage the
planting of flowers, bulbs, shrubs and trees.
It was hoped by the council that all sections
of the community would join together with the
aim of making Newport a more pleasant and
colourful place to live and work in. This remains
the objective for Newport in Bloom to this day.
HOW TO ENTER
There are gardening competitions for residents
in 11 different classes. To enter you can fill in
an online entry form or you can contact info@
newportinbloom.co.uk to request a form.
COMPETITION CLASSES
There are currently 11 competition classes for
you to enter. You may enter only once in classes
one to seven, but in addition you may also enter
classes eight to 11.
Class 1: Best front garden
Class 2: Best flower display in pots, tubs and
containers
Class 3: Best flower display at commercial
properties
Class 4: Best flower display at public houses and

hotels
Class 5: Best maintained parish or church
gardens and cemeteries
Class 6: Best flower display in a community and
neighbourhood joint effort
Class 7: Best flower display at residential homes,
nursing homes and health premises
Class 8: Any wildlife garden
Class 9: Any individual allotment
Class 10: Community Council open class
Class 11: Unusual container
HINTS & TIPS
The competition is run to encourage gardening
and is open to all sorts of gardens. You do not
need a huge garden and it doesnt have to be
up to Chelsea Flower Show standard. Here are a
few pointers that the judges will be looking for:
1. FIRST IMPRESSIONS
Does your garden stand out from neighbouring
ones? Is there a stunning display of flowers?
Are there any unusual or particularly interesting
features?
2. MAINTENANCE AND WEED
CONTROL
Try to make sure display areas are clear of
weeds unless you are entering a wildlife garden!
Have a tidy up, clear up leaves etc and make
sure everything looks its best on judging day.

3. COLOUR
Is there a colour scheme or perhaps a multi-toned
cottage garden effect? Do colours contrast and
complement each other? Are there foliage plants to
contrast with the colour and range of flowers?

FINDING
THE PERFECT
PLAC E TO
R EN T

SO, YOU ARE LOOKING TO RENT AND YOU HAVE NO

IDEA WHERE TO START? RIGHTMOVE HAS THESE TIPS
TO MAKE THE PROCESS AS EASY AS POSSIBLE...

ooking for a rental property can be time consuming

and sometimes quite disappointing but as long
as you sit down and decide exactly what you
are looking for and what your budget is, the process
should be a lot easier.
First of all, think carefully about the type of
property youd like to rent and which best suits your
lifestyle.
For example, if you are only there during the week,
a small place might do just fine. If security is important,
then a ground floor flat may be out. If you have a car,
then a parking space is a must.
Do you want furnished or unfurnished
accommodation or would something thats just
part-furnished be okay? Often it doesnt make much
difference to the rental price.
If its furnished and you are sharing with others,
do you trust them to look after the furniture because
you may lose some or all of your deposit to pay for
damage even if they are responsible for it?
OTHER KEY QUESTIONS TO ASK
YOURSELF:
Is a purpose-built shower essential or can you make
do with a shower attachment in the bath?
What facilities are there for washing and drying
clothes?
Does the property have all the appliances you
need?
Do you need a garden?
Are you prepared to share with someone else if
so, could you share with a live-in landlord?
It can be difficult to find good property to rent.
Sifting through adverts in newspapers is hard work
and the time from print to publication often means that

@wearevoice

by the time you see the ad, the property has long since
been rented to someone else.
If you are prepared to share, you may be lucky
and know someone who is looking for a flatmate.
If your workplace has an intranet site, find out
if it has a section that lists properties for rent. Many
universities and colleges have an accommodation
office, so if you are a student, find out what yours has
to offer.
You could even qualify for a council or Housing
Association property if you have sufficient points, are
on the waiting list or have a specific need.
Unfortunately, it can still be difficult to find good
property to rent using these methods.
Many estate agents now offer lettings departments
with a list of properties which are available for rental
locally. So, a trip to the high street to pop in to each
agent is well worth the time. The lettings staff will also
be able to explain the whole procedure to you so you
know exactly what will be required from you when
you finally decide on a property.
These include deposits, guarantors, references
and tenancy agreements all things you need to think
about before you rent a property.
There are also a number of online sites with advice
on how to go about renting, and with properties to let
which are also well worth a visit.
Even before you start searching for a property to
rent, its important to understand the legal aspects of
being a tenant.
When you become a tenant, you take on certain
responsibilities in exchange for certain rights. Your
tenancy agreement will typically be about five pages
long and very detailed. It lists your responsibilities so
read it carefully. As a minimum, it will show:

The names of the landlord and tenant

How much the rent and deposit is
When the rent will be reviewed
The address for the landlord or agent who will be
looking after the property.
THE MAIN THINGS YOU MUST DO ARE AS
FOLLOWS:
Pay rent on time normally one month in advance
Pay other bills. In most long-term lets, youll be
paying council tax, utilities (including water), TV
licence and telephone charges
Respect neighbours so no making noise, putting
rubbish in the wrong place or obstructing common
areas
Look after the property.
The agents job might be to market the property,
arrange signing of agreements and payment of the first
months rent and deposit.
After that, you may find you are dealing directly
with a landlord who will look after the management.
However, most landlords tend to leave the
management up to the letting agent.
The good news is that you are not expected to
maintain the building thats the landlords job. But
you should behave in such a way that the building is
properly cared for.

Professional nails at Beauty Box

veryone deserves to treat themselves once

in a while, so that is exactly what I did when
I popped into Beauty Box in Newport to
get my nails done.
Greeted by owner Leah Sola, 36, I was
instantly put at ease as she led me up to the
salon which can be found at Everybodys Gym
in Rogerstone.
Opting for a neutral colour to look
professional for my day-to-day work, I sat down
to enjoy getting my nails done in the hands of
a pro.
Leah who has been in the business for five
years, explained that she was giving me a gel
manicure which should last up to three weeks
depending on how much I put my nails through!
The next 30 minutes were vey chilled a
perfect way to finish a hard day at work as I sat

back and relaxed while Leah transformed my

nails into the clean polished look I was hoping
for.
I like what I do because its nice to meet
people and talk to them, Leah said.
The new salon boasts comfortable and
beautifully decorated surroundings proving a
perfect location for a whole host of treatments on
offer including include massages, spray tanning
and eyebrow waxing.

Meet The SW1 Team

Sarah Wilford Salon Owner
18 years experience
Career commenced by coming 3rd in the Goldwell under

Schwarzkoph colouring championships.
Tony and Guy trained at the London Academy, plus completed
Tigi advanced cutting courses and Tigi runway
Other qualifications include LOreAL designer mens cutting,
racoon international hair extensions and Patrick Cameron hair up.
I love all aspects of hairdressing, cutting, styling and colouring, but
my favourite thing to do is bridal hair. With wedding hair up you
get to be more creative, and I love travelling all over the country to
different venues to make the brides feel special for their big day.
I live and breathe hair, apart from my children it is my one true passion. I love making
people feel good about themselves its so rewarding.

Lauren Hoyland

Im a stylist and colourist, but I prefer to colour hair,
especially blonde hair, as I feel this is where my
expertise lies.
My favourite colour in the salon has to be 12-8-9,
which is a pearly white high-light. Its not as powerful
as bleach and so causes less damage to your hair. The
effect is a lifting tint which shimmers and dazzles.
I love working at SW1 as the customers and team are
so friendly, its just like one big happy family.

Im new to the SW1 team and cant wait to meet and greet the

Im a senior stylist who specials in perms and settings. My favourite

thing about working at SW1 is making people feel good and look
beautiful. Hairdressing is very relaxing it always feels nice to be
pampered and looked after.

Im a senior stylist who specialises in wedding up-dos. I

absolutely love doing wedding hair as its the one day of your
life that you can treasure forever. Plus, no wedding is ever the
same; you get the chance to do something completely different to make each
and every bride feel unique.

We have a very relaxed approach and cater for all ages. We get to
know our customers quite well, learning their tastes and interests, and
how they prefer to have their hair done using their favourite products.
With this trust we can then recommend new things to try and offer impartial
advice if they want to try a different look.

fresh and maintained.

Amanda Harris

Hairdressing is all about customer experience, if your client

I look forward to working with the rest of the girls at SW1,
as Sarah and her team have built up a reputation for being

Add some magic to your wedding day with ...

BRYAN GUNTON

oices Wedding Business of the Month is

multi-award winning entertainer Bryan Gunton,
who is a professional close-up magician. Voice
got the chance to talk to the magic-man himself to tell
us a little more about why hes a popular choice for
weddings.
What first got you into magic?
I first got into magic at the age of eight but gave it up
in my teens (not cool then) then got back into magic
around 1995 after watching a David Blaine special
while in the RAF.
Who is your magician hero?
I have many, none that you would know of as they
are not mainstream and all dead. Paul Daniels is an
absolute legend though and through my formative
years shaped the style of how I perform.
What do you love most about performing?
It is always special to see the reactions on peoples
faces.
Whats your favourite trick?
I love cards and my favourite effect is asking someone
to shuffle the cards place them on the table and ask
them to name any card and they cut to it simple no
moves and real magic.
Whats your favourite thing about doing
magic at weddings?
I am not an attention seeking magician, I class myself
an animated table decoration. Bringing guests

68 / WEAREVOICE.CO.UK /APRIL.2015

together and introducing them to each other is what

its all about. Its always great to be part of someones
very special day.
Youve been voted best regional wedding
entertainer at the Welsh National Wedding
Awards for the past two years, and also a
shortlisted in that category for four, why do
you think people voted for you?
Personalised service is a must. Also quality of service,
money back guarantee and never offensive or
intrusive. Plus Im a generally nice guy.
Throughout your career youve performed
in front of many celebrities and sports
personalities, who was the most fun?
For the last seven years Ive performed at an event
for Michelin star chefs and Heston Blumenthal is
probably the most fun, or Philip Glenister (I love life
on Mars).
Why should people hire you for their
wedding/event?
I am a full-time magician who performs personalised
magic for every event. Ive been recommended across
South Wales at many venues. Generally people book
me to entertain at their events because Im me and not
just a magician.

Riders will

MAY 7 IS A BIG DAY IN BRITISH POLITICS ITS THE DAY WE

GO TO THE POLLS TO ELECT THE GOVERNMENT WHO WILL BE
MAKING ALL THE DECISIONS FOR THE NEXT FIVE YEARS

his is an interesting time in the world of politics

with new-kids-on-the-block UKIP making
a lot of noise and the three main parties
wondering if anyone will get an outright majority or
if one of them will have to join forces with the likes
of the SNP to form a coalition.
We here at Voice thought it would be interesting
to nd out what some new voters think of it all, so we
popped along to Duffryn High School in Newport to
chat to a group of 18-year-old Sixth Formers about
their voting intentions.

up in that we have different interests. If I pick up a

paper I go straight to the back page and I dont watch
the news on TV unless its the MTV news.
BRONWYN SATTERLY IS REGISTERED
AND WILL BE VOTING

I havent looked into it at the moment and Im not

sure if I will even vote. I dont really know enough
about what the parties have to say.
CURTIS HEARD SAID IT WAS HIGHLY
UNLIKELY THAT HE WOULD REGISTER TO
VOTE.
Ive not taken enough of an interest so I will
probably not vote. Nothing they say really motivates
me to. I do believe that having the vote is important
for those who want it because it is an opportunity to
use your opinion. If I had a greater understanding of
the policies I think I would vote in the future. I think
they do tend to direct their campaigns and policies
to an older generation. Politics is going to be very
entertaining its just the way we have been brought

@wearevoice

Top row, right to left: Ayat

Hassan, Suriya Hussain, Ellie
Beecham, Ewan Stone and Jack
Cheung-Robinson

SURIYA HUSSAIN REGISTERED AND

WILL BE VOTING
I feel the same about it being important to be able to
use my own opinion when voting. I am interested in
education and university policies.

My mum and dad have always voted and they tell

me it is important to do so. I think the policies which
affect me the most are university fees. I dont know
who my parents vote for and they wouldnt inuence
me on who I vote for.

ELLIE BEECHAM IS REGISTERED BUT

WONT BE VOTING

RUBY GOOM IS REGISTERED AND WILL

BE VOTING

EWAN STONE IS REGISTERED BUT

DOUBTS HE WILL VOTE

HERES WHAT WE FOUND OUT:

TOM JOHN WASNT SURE IF HE WAS
REGISTERED BUT WOULD PROBABLY
REGISTER BEFORE THE CUT OFF DATE OF
APRIL 20

Bottom row, left to right:

Tom John, Curtis Heard, Bronwyn
Satterly, Ruby Goom and Sama
El-Hreich

It is important to be able to use your opinion. I will

be looking at things which are relevant to people of
my age like university fees.
SAMA EL-HREICH IS REGISTERED AND
WILL BE VOTING
I want to have my own say and I want to know
whats going on. I want to be a primary school
teacher and I want to nd out what is happening
in education. I think we should have a say in any
policies. Having the right to vote is very important
and men and women should all vote.
AYAT HASSAN WASNT REGISTERED YET
BUT WAS EXPECTING TO REGISTER
I know it is important to have my own opinion and
our vote can inuence what goes on in our country.
I am interested in health and welfare because it is
important to every one of us.

I dont know enough about it. I dont think my

opinion will matter. I will probably vote when I am
older, just not this time.

I dont know enough about any of the parties. I

think I will vote later in life but I dont think they do
enough for people of our age. I dont think bringing
down the voting age like they did in the Scottish
referendum will make any difference. They are out
of touch with young people. The policies are aimed
at an older generation because they are more likely
to vote.
JACK CHEUNG-ROBINSON NOT
REGISTERED AND HASNT MADE HIS
MIND UP IF HE IS GOING TO REGISTER
I would need to evaluate the policies to see if there is
anything relevant to my life. Maybe there are things
like university fees and the NHS but I dont think
there is a lot relevant to people of our age. Some
people think long term but I dont really care.

A DAY OUT WITH A DIFFERENCE
The Newport Transporter Bridge
is one of only six working transporter
bridges worldwide. It was designed
and built in 1906 to solve the
problem of needing a river crossing
on a hugely tidal river which was also
being used by tall shipping.
More than 100 years ago, workers
used to climb the stairs and walk
across the gantry twice every day
to save the halfpenny fares for the
gondola ride. Why not follow in their
footsteps and climb to the highest
point of any of the Transporter
bridges worldwide? Your reward is
the fantastic view across the Bristol
Channel from the top walkway, or
you can try to spot the many Newport
locations which have been used to
lm Dr Who.
The bridge stands on the Wales
Coast Path, and the gondola crossing

itself forms part of the route.

This makes it a part of a wider
network of walks and cycleways,
which also links to the National Cycle
Network, and is a great stop off point
on your journey.
During your visit, call into the
Motor House and see Edwardian
engineering in action the original
two 35 horsepower motors still power
the gondola after 108 years.
The volunteer-operated visitor
centre aims to open all year round
(not always guaranteed) and The
Friends of Newport Transporter
Bridge can arrange for a guide to
show you around.
Pre-booked groups can visit
throughout the year, not just during
the summer, so why not bring your
friends, colleagues or sports club for
a day out with a difference!

NEW WALK AND CYCLE ROUTE

OFFICIALLY OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

he Riverfronts walk and cycle path

is now open for people to use. Work
to nish off the nal link of the
route was completed in March, which now
connects the east and west of the city centre.
The new pedestrian and cycle path runs
along both sides of the River Usk, from Town
Bridge to City Bridge.
Housing and commercial developers have
taken responsibility for sections of the walk,
as their schemes have taken shape, but, until
recently one part remained unnished.
Newport City Council took the decision
to carry out the work to this section, just off
of Corporation Road, and it was funded by
the Welsh Government as part of its Active
Travel campaign, working closely with
Sustrans a leading charity enabling people
to choose healthier, cleaner and cheaper
journeys.
The new route is also part of the Wales
Coastal Path, which has great viewing
platforms for breathtaking panoramic scenes
of natural beauty and wildlife, benches to
admire the views, and also special features

@wearevoice

such as the words from poet WH Davies.

In 2005 work began to clear and level
the once derelict Old Town Dock as part of
regeneration proposals for housing, ofces
and leisure, which includes the walk and
cycle path, as well as the park and garden
area.
This year sees a whole host of new
networking paths all over the city including
the Newport Heritage trail, Riverside Circular
and City Centre to Roman Caerleon. The
Newport Cycle Map shows the improving
network of on and off road routes for
cycling. Be it for getting to work, leisure or as
a way to enjoy the heritage, attractions, city
county or countryside of Newport.
Famous landmarks along these routes
include Tredegar House, Fourteen Locks
Canal Centre, the Transporter Bridge,
Newport Wetlands Reserve, Wales
National Velodrome and Caerleon Roman
Amphitheatre.
All routes from the city centre will have
you in the countryside within one mile of
cycling or walking.

Act
Active Travel Act (Wales) 2013 came into
force September 25, 2014. The act creates
new duties for local authorities in Wales to
identify their existing and design new walking
and cycle links which connect people to
places across the authority.
The aim is to achieve a walking and cycling
network across all the designated localities
of the authority, so that people can use the
network as an real healthy, sustainable,
alternative to using vehicular transport. The
areas to be included are all of the city of
Newport and the larger settlements in the
authority including Marshfield, Caerleon and
Langstone. The act also provides guidance for
how walking and cycleways should be built
either as off road routes or alongside existing
roads. Once networks are identified Newport
city council will be able to bid for funding.
The first duty is the creation of an Existing Route Map. This has to
be undertaken by local authority with input from the public through
a consultation exercise
A base map is being produced to show existing routes and
facilities that are Safe & Suitable for active travel in Newport
The draft map once completed will be issued for consultation
NCC will issue the draft map and welcome public comments
from June 2015. The public consultation will run from June to
August and will be issued to all interested parties, these are
any groups, organisations or individuals who have expressed
an interest in being consulted
Those wishing to be consulted should register their interest with
the Streetscene Green Services by end of May 2015. In
addition the consultation will be made available online
from June onwards

Following the consultation process Newport City Council

will complete its map and send to the Welsh Government by
September 2015.
Following on from the agreement of the existing route map is the
second duty this is provision of an integrated network map
This map will show proposed routes for short, medium, long
term development and implementation over 15 years to 2032
Routes to be developed to follow the Active Travel Design
Guidance published in Sept 2014 and following
consultation with the public in 2016 and 2017
Provide final map and statement to WG by
Sept 2017

smash-hit production of War Horse,
is coming to the festival - and the hit
of the festival is Gordie MacKeeman
and His Rhythm Boys, hailing from
Canadas Price Edward Island, who will
be delivering the breathtaking sound of
ery and frenetic ddle bluegrass styles
combined with some jaw-dropping and
acrobatic footwork.
Steve Tilston, sponsored by Newport
Folk Club, delights everyone with his
inspiring songwriting craft and his
assured guitar style. Gwent valleys band
Allan Yn Y Fan have just expanded to a
sextet, with new recruits, lead vocalist
Catrin ONeill and ddler Alan Cooper,
joining them for the rst major Welsh
event of the new year. Catrin grew up
in Southern Snowdonia, and it was her
Nain (grandmother) who rst introduced
her to the storehouse of Welsh folk
song. Catrin was one of the musicians
and singers of the highly successful

project 10 mewn bws/10 on a bus,

which was engineered by the all-Wales
folk development organisation trac.
The project generated a massive wave
of interest in Welsh music circles, and
this year was nominated for a National
Lottery award. Alan started as a
classical musician and has a wealth of
experience accompanying artists and in
bands playing America and Europe and
recording albums as well.
Allan Yn Y Fan have recorded many
albums and played in Europe, at the
gigantic Lorient Interceltique in Brittany
and at the prestigious Celtic Connections
Festival in Glasgow.
Among the highlights are Yorkshire
multi-instrumentalist Pete Coe and
dancer/musician Alice Jones, who
present their fascinating story-show on
Leeds-born singer and song collector
Frank Kidson, The Search For FiveFinger Frank. Pete and Alice have
released a CD of a the show, which
features new arrangements of both
classic and rare folk songs, unearthed
from the treasure trove that is the Frank
Kidson Collection. Kidson was born in

1855 and died in 1926, and his rst

and most enduring song collection,
Traditional Tunes, was rst published in
1891, ten years before Cecil Sharp had
even heard his rst folk song.
This show celebrates and
commemorates the incredible legacy of a
man widely regarded as a pioneer of the
folk song revival. Pete and Alice have had
full access to his original manuscripts
and broadside collection, and have even
had help from Kidsons descendants
along the way. Audiences will be amazed
to learn that many of the songs now
popular in the folk repertoire of today
were initially collected and published
by this founder member of the Folk
Song Society and key gure in the folk
movement of the early 1900s.
One of the rising young stars is
14-year-old local ddler Meg Cox, who
fronts the Meg Cox Band and plays tenor
guitar and banjo as well. The Festival
welcomes other young artists such as
Jaywalkers, who reached the nals of
the BBC Young Folk Awards and have
cemented their reputation as stunning
bluegrass musicians.

Festival vice-president Steve Lyons, resplendent in his Welsh

cilt, addresses hundreds of primary school dancers

Last but not least is the mighty dance

band Juice, who will be linking up with
the expert Cardiff caller Dave Parsons
for the Saturday night twmpath/ceilidh.
Originally from the Gwent Levels village of
Castleton and named Juice Of Barley, the
band was formed by musical parents Gil
and Jenny Kilbride and their three sons,
Danny, Bernard and Gerard. Now Danny
is guitarist with Juice and combines his
busy musicians role with being director of
trac. He is joined by his brother Bernard
on ddle, and the current line-up consists
of autist Imogen ORourke, Dean Ryan
on bass and drummer-percussionist Dave

with imaginations galore all thats left is to explore as we enter the
magical world of Tiny Toes Ballet

Tiny Toes Ballet is a pre-school educational

movement and music concept for babies,
toddlers and children from 6 months to 7
years. The UKs first ballet programme linked
to the Early Years Foundation Curriculum, it is
a unique learning experience that is proving
very popular!

Tiny Toes Ballet East Newport and

Abergavenny teach more than 100 pupils on
a weekly basis across South East Wales.
The Tiny Toes Ballet curriculum was developed
with children at its heart. All children are
born with an innate sense of musicality, they
naturally dance and move to music with a

beat; but only if this is encouraged early

enough will a child fulfil their natural potential.
Early exposure to dancing, singing, listening
and responding to music and rhythm can
lay firm foundations to support all aspects of
learning and development. All classes, which
are held by fully qualified Primary School
teachers with ballet qualifications, aim to
develop self-expression, body awareness and
confidence within a creative, nurturing and
fun-filled environment.
Classes are as follows;
Tip toes (6-18 months)
Twinkle toes (18 months- 2 years)
Talent toes (2 - 4 years)
Twirlers (3 to 5 years)
Spinners (5-7 years)

Th NURSERY

Voices Education Establishment of the Month is the newly-opened The Owl and
Pussy Cat Nursery, which is situated in the heart of Caerleon on Church Street

he nursery is owned and directed

by Catherine Jones, a qualied
early childhood teacher from New
Zealand, who has eight years
experience in teaching and childcare.
The nursery is set in a converted
Methodist chapel, where no expense has
been spared in turning the old building
into a bright and fun place for children to
play and learn.
Theres a mezzanine oor for babies
and an open plan downstairs area for
toddlers and pre-schoolers.
Weve used a lot of wooden, natural
and up-cycled materials, said Catherine.
We want to show children how to
care and be responsible for our local
environment, teaching them about
recycling, reusing, gardening, as well as
cleaning up after themselves.
This is also reected in our outdoor
play area, a space which can be used
all-year round, lled with a wide range of
sensory activities for children to enjoy.
The Owl and Pussycat Nursery
provides care for children aged three
months to four years, and is registered by
the Care and Social Services Inspectorate
Wales to cater up to 19 children.
As there are small numbers at the
nursery, children get more one-to-one
time with their carers, allowing them to

@wearevoice

create a stronger bond with their key

worker and all staff caring for them.
The nursery is open 51 weeks a year,
closing between Christmas and New
Year, and is open Monday to Friday from
7.30am to 6pm, with the exception of
bank holidays.
We believe it is important that the
children have the chance to build warm
and loving relationships with their carers
and feel comfortable in our nursery
environment, said Catherine.
We also want to create close ties
with the childrens families and the local
community involving parents with their
childs education with our open door
policy and parents evenings.
Additionally we want to work closely
with the local schools to help ease the
transition from nursery to school.
At The Owl and Pussycat Nursery,
the carers strive to provide outstanding
quality childcare and early education to
the local community at a reasonable and
competitive price.
So, if youre looking for a childcare
service which has a loving, safe and
caring environment, where your child
is encouraged to learn through creative
play, make sure The Owl and Pussycat
Nursery your rst choice.

THE ROCK AND

FOUNTAIN

FOOD NEWS

Eton Mess is a simple,

fun recipe to get stuck into.
The desert is traditionally
served at Eton Colleges
annual prize-giving picnic.
It takes just 10 minutes
to make and this recipe
serves up to 6 people.

Heres what youll

need;
6 ready-made
meringues

570ml double
cream (or you
can use half Greek
yogurt for a
healthier version)

450g strawberries,
washed and hulled

This is how
to make it;
1 Cut the
strawberries in
half or, if the
strawberries are big,
cut into thick slices.
Let the strawberries
chill for 2-3 hours
2 Whip the cream
until it forms soft
peaks and then fold
in the berries

92 / WEAREVOICE.CO.UK / APRIL.2015

3 Crush the
meringues, then fold
into the strawberry
and cream mixture
4 Spoon the Eton Mess
into individual dishes
and decorate with
extra strawberries to

The Rock and Fountain at

Penhow has, over the years, had
many guises. But the one it is in
now certainly seems to be a very
popular one.
We visited on Thursday
evening and the place was
packed with diners enjoying
the relaxed atmosphere of this
former coaching inn on the
A48 between Newport and
Chepstow.
Once sat at our table we were
given plenty of time to peruse
the menu over our drinks.
The rst thing we noticed
was the price 10 for a twocourse meal and 14.50 for
three courses, with a supplement
added for a few of the selection
(10, for example, for the llet
steak). And judging by the
food that was being ferried
to the tables around us, there
was no skimping on the sizes
of the portions coming out of
the kitchen being manned by
landlord and head chef Gareth
and his team.
Starters for us were calamari,
garlic mushrooms and a
mozzarella and tomato salad,
accompanied by some delicious
bread from local micro-baker
Baked on Green Street, which is

based in Redwick.
Then came the mains. We
went for a handcut ribeye steak
with chips, onion rings, and
a garnish (3 supplement); a
llet steak with peppercorn and
brandy sauce (2.95 extra for the
sauce); and pan seared sea bass
with a lemon garnish. The steaks
came with an intriguingly titled
pot of mojo something very
garlicky. We also chose a side
of green beans in bacon (3.50).
The steaks were beautifully
cooked and extremely succulent.
The sea bass was melt in the
mouth and we loved the green
beans dish.
Then came the sweets.
Tiramisu for me, cappuccino
pyramid for Ollie, and lime
meringue cheesecake from
Monkley Made Cheesecakes
of Magor, for David. Each was
perfect for rounding off the meal.
Gareth also runs The
Waterloo at Nash near Newport,
where you can also enjoy the
same meal deals.

can be found at Llanvaches
Road, Penhow NP26 3AD.

CHEF OF THE MONTH

GARETH LEE AT THE ROCK AND FOUNTAIN

Voices Chef of the Month is Gareth Lee, head chef and landlord of The
Rock and Fountain at Penhow

ince taking over the business nearly a year

ago, Gareth and his wife Heather have turned
The Rock and Fountain into a must-visit for
all food lovers.
The reason why people travel from all over the
county to dine at this country pub and restaurant
is because of Gareths fantastic style of simple
cooking using quality ingredients.
A kitchen is only as good as the people you
work with, said Gareth.
Im fortunate to be surrounded by a great
team, with chef Lee Bell being my right-hand man.
Heather and I always set out to give people
the option of great quality at an amazing price.
This is the basis on which we have built our
reputation on, and we denitely offer that here at
the Rock and Fountain.
Theres nowhere else you can get the same

@wearevoice

quality for the same price. Many people and

businesses have tried to copy or create a similar
style of menu, but have never come close to ours.
Heather and I didnt expect to restaurant to be
as busy as it is, were so grateful for the continued
support from the local community and to everyone
who travels out to pay us a visit.
The fact of the matter is, if you do something
well, people will travel to get it. We never
compromise on quality.
If you havent ventured out to the Rock and
Fountain of Penhow yet, ask yourself why not?
The menu on offer is full of culinary gems
such as sizzling king prawns, dressed Devon Crab,
and creamy garlic mushrooms to start, as well as
roasted salmon llet, chicken supreme and roasted
pork chops for your main course.
For people who have never been to the Rock

and Fountain and are wondering what to try, this

is what I would recommend hot and spicy Welsh
lamb with peppers served with pitta bread and
minty yoghurt to start, one of our hand cut 28-day
hung mature steaks for the main course, and to
nish with a homemade crme brle.
This three course meal costs 17.50, and at
most establishments youd pay around that for
the main course, so youre getting three quality
courses for the price of one. Its a no-brainer when
you think about it!
Pay a visit the Rock and Fountain this spring
to sample food from Voices Chef of the Month,
located on Llanvaches Road, Penhow NP26 3AD.

he festival is based around 10 venues all located

in the beautiful Swansea Maritime Quarter.
The second Swansea International Jazz Festival
has been arranged in partnership with Swansea
Jazzland, Arts Council of Wales, City and County
of Swansea, University of Wales Trinity St David
and business sponsors Prescott Jones Insurance.
The ticketed concerts will be held in the Dylan
Thomas Centre and National Waterfront Museum,
with eight additional venues hosting the Fringe
Festival.
Last years inaugural festival got off to a flying
start with around 10,000 visitors enjoying the
combination of ticketed and free events, in a superb
and compact waterfront location. There are plenty
of car parks and a wide range of hotels and guest
houses in the area around the Maritime Quarter.
Plus both Swansea Bus and Railway stations are
close by.
Along with some of the best jazz musicians
the UK has on offer, the festival welcomes bands
from New Orleans, Holland and Italy. There will
be ticketed concerts plus the festival fringe offering
more than 30 free events to enjoy. There are also
jazz workshops with professionals which are free to
come along to.
Dave Cottle is chairman of Swansea Jazzland,
the jazz club which operates out of St James Club
in Swansea very Wednesday and on occasional
other nights.
He is also the festival director and is now

looking ahead to what he hopes will be a

successful second instalment.
I am thrilled it is happening again, he said.
Last year was a success and I hope this will
be as well. It is great to have the support of the
organisations who are behind us and the local
venues.
The festival patron is Dr Karl Jenkins, the worlds
most performed living composer is looking forward
to the festival. I look forward to returning to the
2015 festival, he said. Swansea Jazzland is an
iconic venue and is a favourite venue in the UK for
visiting musicians, be they from the UK or abroad.
Dave Cottle, its founder, has been unstinting and
indefatigable in his efforts in keeping this non-profit
making venture alive.
I hope we can move forward and build on the
fantastic foundation laid in 2014 with the inaugural
Swansea International Jazz festival and make
the festival a permanent entry in the citys cultural
diary.
Great deals are available on line for all day
tickets each day, Friday, Saturday and Sunday,

VOICE CATCHES UP WITH SOMEONE IMPORTANT IN
THE NEWPORT ARTS SCENE...

MOHAMAD FEZ MIAH

ON CLASSICAL MUSIC, FASHION

WALES LIVE AND HAPPINESS...
WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT DO YOU
DO?
My name is Mohamad but you can
call me Fez. I am 100 per cent human
no alien or robotic parts. Im a part-time
lecturer at the University of South Wales in
the creative sound and music programme
and foundation degree in creative
audiovisual media. I also run a youth
arts organisation in Newport which has
developed projects such as Fashion Wales
LIVE and STOMP. When I have some time I
help create films and media projects too.
HOW DID YOU GET INTO THIS ROLE?
They came about after graduating from
university a long time ago. I developed
an online channel with some peers. We
recorded rappers from across Wales. The
initiative produced more than 300 videos,
accumulated millions of views, and has had
almost 6,000 subscribers from across the
globe. I have worked for many arts and
human rights charities since and this had
lead to where I am now.
WHAT IS THE NEWPORT ARTS/MUSIC
SCENE LIKE?
It is resilliant but poorly funded. We
need policy makers to understand the true
economic and social value of our arts. We
also need more people to stand up and
advocate for the arts so we can preserve
more for future generations.
WHATS THE BEST SHOW/EVENT
THAT YOU HAVE STAGED IN THE
CITY?
Fashion Wales LIVE is an
accomplishment for the entire team involved

and the thousands of people who have

watched it or participated. Thanks to Arts
Council for Wales, the project is returning
this year in July!
WHAT WOULD BE YOUR DREAM
SHOW/EVENT TO STAGE HERE?
An international arts event would be
nice.
WHERE WOULD YOU SUGGEST WE
GO FOR AN ARTY NIGHT OUT IN THE
CITY?
Between Barnarbas Arts Centre, The
Riverfront, Dolaman Theatre, Le Pub and
occasionally the The Project Space these
are all great places to watch theatre,
comedy and live shows. Not forgetting
Warehouse 54 and The Pen and Wig
which have great acoustic music nights
early in the week.
MOST EMBARRASSING THING
THATS EVER HAPPENED IN YOUR
CAREER?
I remember someone (wont name them)
repeatedly got my name wrong for about
two years. I never felt the need to correct
them since I actually liked the new remixed
name I had. Sadly, one day that person
announced my name wrong live on stage.
I should have just corrected it when I had
the chance. Not that embarrassing really,
just one of those funny moments we all
laughed off.
WHAT ONE SONG WOULD YOU
HAVE TO HAVE ON YOUR IPOD?
One song?! I love music too much to pick

just one song. If I could only have

one, it might have to be something
classical and extremely long so it
wouldnt irritate me. I think the older
we get, the more we appreciate
classical music, we notice tiny
nuances each and every time we
hear it. Im too much of a noob to
give you a name of a song though.
Its track six on my spotify classical
music tunes.

informative and thinking reads.

One I suggest more take a look
at. Maybe then I can start having
discussions about it.
IF YOU WERENT HERE DOING
THIS, WHERE WOULD YOU BE?
I would be doing it all elsewhere,
I guess.
IF YOU COULD GRANT
NEWPORT, ONE WISH WHAT
WOULD IT BE?
For everyone to be happy.

WHAT IS THE LAST BOOK YOU

READ?
Who Owns the Future by Jaron
Lanier.
Dark but very insightful look at the
changes and pitfall of capitalism
and how we have got it wrong in
a digital and information-lead age.
We live in radically transparent times
and a lot of our systems havent
updated along with the invention of
the internet. Its one of those more

WHAT WOULD BE YOUR

DREAM JOB?
Think Im already there. Weird
never thought about that.
THREE WORDS WHICH SUM UP
NEWPORT TO YOU...
Resilient, defiant, creative
