But we have this treasure in clay jars, so that it may be made clear that this extraordinary power belongs to God and does not come from us. 2 Corinthians 4:7 (NRSV)
Many times a day, as I go in and out of my office, I pass a framed work of art by
Shari LeMonnier. In it one can see a collection of jars, and each jar is a person (sometimes more
than one person). The painting is the artists impression of the passage above, from Second Corinthians. The treasure of which Paul writes is the treasure of the gospel. Paul has just reminded his readers of the unbelievably good news that the same God who spoke light into being
at the beginning of time also shines in our hearts, giving us a picture of Gods love in the person
of Jesus Christ. The clay jars that Paul mentions are his fellow Christians. He refers partly to
those lines in Genesis that describe God forming humans from the dust and breathing into them
the breath of life. Adam (Heb., the man) was formed from adamah (Heb., the ground)
(Genesis 2:7). In that sense we are literally made of clay. But clay jars also signify that we
are not so splendid. We are not gold or silver vessels, or even enameled ceramic, but just plain
old clay jars. Like any clay jar, we are subject to breaking when life is too rough on us. So,
Paul seems to be saying, its amazing that God has entrusted the precious message of the gospel
to such ordinary, breakable, fallible vessels as we.
And that is exactly what God has done. Sometimes we may wonder whether God made a mistake in trusting us: we so often fail to live up to the kind of discipleship that Jesus taught. But its
also true that when we are at our best, the gospel of Jesus shines from us as if we were not ordinary clay, but rather bright crystal. In Sharis painting, some of the jars are filled with such energy
that their persons seem to be shooting out the top. Thats how I imagine God wants us to
becontainers for the effervescence of the best news there can possibly be. In this Easter season, when we have opportunities to pop our cork, I pray that Gods love comes bubbling out
of us like the choicest champagne. Easter joy to you, and to all the world!

Youth News for April Tiffany Grossman

Spring is upon us! I sure am looking forward to warmer weather. This month, the
youth studied The People Who Knew Jesus in our weekly Lenten series. It was a great way
to examine how Jesus interacted with different groups of people.
The youth lock in will be April 10-11 from 5:30 pm through 9 am. We will meet at
Central first for a yummy dinner and to help with Centrals Parents Night Out. Around 9 pm,

we will move to Centenary for the remainder of the evening. Youth should bring sleeping
bags, pillows, a change of clothes, board games, and appropriate movies. Please let Tiffany
know by April 6 if your youth plans to attend and for a permission form if you do not already
have a blanket permission form on file.
On May 10 (at Centenary) and May 17 (at Central), the youth will celebrate Youth
Sunday. This is always an exciting service for the entire congregation. We will begin planning
these worship services during our lock in.
The youth will travel to Buckhorn, Kentucky from July 16-19 for our mission trip. We

will be helping Buckhorn Lake Area Presbyterian Church teach Vacation Bible School. Youth
should have received a letter in the mail explaining this trip. Please see Tiffany if you did not
receive this letter or if you have any questions.
