The sun was shining as egg-cited

went down a treat with everyone

was a welcome addition to the day.
A great morning was had by all.

The annual Anne Duncan Real Estate Easter Egg Hunt

he market continues to bubble

along with the prices of
character properties not abating
at all, some in particular continue
to rise in value. There is no sign
of the market easing as supply
is still tightly held. The months
of February and March 2015 have
actually been our best for some
years and bodes well for the rest of
the year, I think.

John scooped the prize.

The new Mr & Mrs Covich.

A great catch for father and son

JOHN COVICH had cause for a
double celebration recently as he
saw his eldest son get married
and scooped the first & second
prize in the annual ADRE fishing
competition.
Proud parents John and Pam
watched with excitement as their
eldest son Matthew married his
girlfriend of eight years, Nicki
Wood on a glorious summers day
in Auckland. The ceremony was

held in the historic grounds of

Pah Homestead in Hillsborough
followed by a plush reception on
the top-floor roof terrace of the
Law Society Building in the city.
The happy couple were joined
by friends, family and relatives
who travelled from all over for the
joyous occasion with best man
Tony Austin making the special
trip all the way from the UK and
brother Jonathan from Dubai.

Council undecided on Auckland fireplace ban

final decision has yet to be

made on the banning of open
fireplaces and older-style woodburners in houses across Auckland.
The ban was initially due to come
in on May 1, meaning owners would
have had to take out or block up
fires before they could sell their
properties and fireplaces were to
be removed altogether by 2018.
But after widespread criticism the
councils Regulatory and Bylaws
Committee is set to reconsider
the ban again at its meeting later
in April. Councils were looking
at the issue following recent

scientific recommendations that air

standards need to be reviewed.
In the meantime those of you with
fireplaces should be aware that
now is a good time of the year to get
your chimney swept. Keeping your
chimney or flue cleaned regularly
will ensure you are safe from any
potential fire hazards.
Best option is to have it swept
and inspected once a year due to
blockages, soot build-up, birds,
animals and general deterioration.
All of Anne Duncan Rental
properties that have fireplaces get a
check and sweep at least once year.

And remember every household

should have at least one smoke
alarm installed to ensure the safety
of its occupants.

Basic Fireplace Safety!

Ensure you have a firescreen
Do not leave your home with the
fire still burning!
Use well-seasoned firewood to
avoid excessive soot build-up
Make sure an adult is responsible
for the fire
Have your chimney or flue
cleaned regularly
Install smoke detectors

Mt Alberts thriving caf culture

N

EW ZEALANDS caf culture

has long been established and
is booming at the moment. There
seems to be a coffee revolution
taking place and city fringe suburbs
like Mt Albert have a thriving
network of places for locals to go.
Whether its catching up over a
cup of coffee or enjoying a night out
after work it seems theres plenty of
choice being offered in the area. If
youre vegetarian, vegan or glutenfree youll find it more pleasurable
to eat out these days than ever
before.
New to Mt Albert is Chinoiserie
which opened its doors just before
Christmas and has taken the locals
by storm. Its cool, trendy and relaxed
atmosphere has afforded Owairaka
Ave a definite place on the map.
On the menu is a mix of delicious
Chinese and Taiwanese-inspired
food, and all at reasonable prices.
The restaurant is the second
venture from the owners of the very
popular LOeuf caf situated right
next door. LOeuf is open during the
day and serves an interesting and
unusual mix of dishes for breakfast
and lunch, with something to suit
everyones taste. The caf, staff
and its menu is attracting all types

Three of the many fine gastronomic offerings in Mt Albert. From left: Chinoiserie, Pyrenees and Sal Rose
of people to sample its wares and
has proved very popular in the area.
And of course there are the
well-established eateries already
a huge hit in Mt Albert. Take
Parkside cafe for example which
serves classic food during the day
and transforms into a delicious
Vietnamese restaurant by night.
Fresh ingredients are the key for
these authentic and flavoursome
dishes and the restaurants growing
number of fans is testament to the

cafs consistency.
Pyrenees French Caf is another
icon around Mt Albert and is unique
to the area. They have a bakery, deli
and freezer full of delicious foods
and the cakes, macaroons and hot
food all prove very popular. Its the
quality coffee that most people rave
about.
Italian restaurant Sal Rose
is a firm favourite amongst the
locals and is now open all day for

breakfast, lunch and dinner. Their

home-style cooking and genuine
family recipes sets the ambience
and gives you a true taste of Italy.
A full bar and a wide selection of
Italian wines are also on offer.
Other cafes include Triniti of Silver
Caf, Cosset, The Lodge and a host
of Chinese, Thai, Fijian and Indian
delights proving that you dont have
to go far to get top quality food and
drink at very affordable prices.

A chat with auctioneer Neil Newman

contracts, visiting properties, having
meetings with vendors/salespeople
plus of course conducting the
auctions.
Favourite part of your day?
Rehydrating post auction when
there are happy buyers, sellers and
salespeople as company.
Least favourite part of your day?
Inspecting locked up homes on
a humid February day in a suit
following festive season indulgence!
Finding lock boxes well hidden by
salespeople to get keys on a wet
winters day a close second.
What time do you get up and whats
usually for breakfast? Around 6
-6.30. Ill have eggs/something
savoury often after having little by
way of dinner due to auctions the
night before!
What does a normal day look like
for an auctioneer? Although I have
written and presented auction
marketing courses around the
country, been conference guest
speaker and so on, my typical day
involves writing up my dialogue for
auctions to be conducted, perusing

How did you get into your

profession? I started work as an
office junior for Dalgety NZ Ltd
stock and station agents in my
home city of Whangarei. After a
year I moved on to livestock clerk
travelling Northland (early starts
drafting livestock for sale and late
nights which often involved driving
home well lubricated auctioneers!
First auction called at 18 yrs of age,
on the road as a livestock agent at
19yrs with my shiny red Datsun 180B
replacing my 66 VW! Ten years in
this industry, ten years with Turners

Auctions before focussing on Real

estate auctioneering.
Best thing about your job? Acting
as facilitator enabling sellers and
buyers achieve their dreams is very
satisfying but of course this only
happens when capable salespeople
have set the scene.
Most memorable moments good
or bad? Bad being told I had cancer
and would likely have three months
to live when 32 yrs old with a wife,
an eight year old daughter and a
two yr old son. Good surviving six
months of chemo, seeing our son
get married in March and being here
when our daughter delivers our first
grandchild in April. Dont sweat the
small stuff it aint life threatening.
How do you unwind / any hobbies
Just purchased in Omaha beach.
Getting the boat wet and fish for
dinner, reclaiming a respectable golf
handicap and seeing if I can still play
tennis is on the radar. Like most of
us in this industry, been too much
work and not enough play.
Favourite holiday destination?
Wonderful memories of annual

camping holidays at Tauranga Bay

north of the Bay of islands, my wife
Raewyn and I took over a very rustic
family leasehold bach at Whananaki
on the Tutukaka Coast. Loved the
sights on the beach at Club Med
Noumea!
What advice would you give to
people considering a career as
an auctioneer? See as many
auctioneers as you can. From this
establish your own style-Ive seen
many auctioneers who are like
clones of someone else. Toast
masters, speech/drama training,
attend training courses.
